View Full Version : The Last Ride

Yesterday I saw something I don't think I'll ever forget. I was coming home from the southern part of the state, and we took a wrong turn and had to turn around in a sprawling trailer court. At one end of this court were parked numerous semis.
I noticed that one of the semis was an (empty) slaughterhouse truck. As we circled the lot to turn around, I did a double take.
Painted on the back (on the fold up ramp which the animals walk into the truck) were huge black words: THE LAST RIDE.

Ugh. That is a terrible feeling that those words give. The people who put it on there probably thought it was funny.
I've been next to a trailer like that in traffic before and you can hear the cows mooing and you can see how crowded and scared they are through the little holes in the sides of the trailer.
A sign like that on the back of a truck like that is just another kick in the face to the animals and the people who want to protect them.

It almost reminds me of the sign at the entrance to Auschwitz I, "Work (shall) make (you) free." It's just a cynical slap by people who mean to hurt and kill.

I've seen a semi with the same thing on the back. Ugh. I can't stand seeing "livestock" trucks. I speed up to pass. They make me so nauseous.

Hey, on a tangent (kind of) I do think the signs on the back of the cab of semis that have no bed/trailer that say "Goin' Home" or something to that effect are cute.

Aimra,
I had the same thing happen a few months ago. I was next to a semi with cows while I was stopped on the expressway (yes you read that correctly). I could see their faces and the tags on their ears and hear them moo. It was very powerful and completely heartbreaking.
Just strengthens my resolve and belief that anything we can do to change this is an intrinsic good.
