I know I may not get advice specific to the Pittsburgh area, but I thought some of you may be able to point me in the right direction.
Are there any good websites or other ways to find animal-related activist opportunities, like protests, demonstrations, walks, and other events being held in or near your city?
Thanks in advance. :)
I'm sure there are PETA members in Pittsburgh who can help you. One thing you can do is call PETA headquarters and ask if they know of active members in the Pittsburgh area who can help you. Another thing is to locate veg*an restaurants in Pittsburgh, especially those located near colleges and universities. They may have bulletin boards or stacks of pamphlets, or even restaurant staff who may have answers for you.

The Humane Society might also have info. Might want to check into the SPCA, too.
Or, call your local newspaper. IIRC, Pitt has several, and I'm sure any activists have contacted them for publicity. Since the newspapers' job is to be in-the-know, they could probably give you names and numbers to contact, even if they have not written stories or run announcement about the demonstrations.

There are some things you can do by yourself too. For example, Vegan Outreach promotes their "adopt a college" program of leafletting at colleges http://www.whyvegan.com http://www.veganhealth.org/colleges/ They reason that reaching out to "younger" people is probably more effective in the long-run than using those resources for the general public - I generally agree with that.
There must be like-minded people in your area, but if not, there is much you can do. Get literature from PETA and leaflet at KFC. Look into vivisection in your area, etc. As one person, it's harder to do serious demonstrations, but you can do an education campaign of leafletting very easily. You can even set up a battery powered tv on the street and show videos. And others may decide to join you, so you can branch out from there. Sometimes one person with a vision is all it takes to get things moving :)
Actually, vegan outreach is in Pittsburgh. So you'll have no trouble finding someone to leaflet with you! You could probably just email Matt Ball at VO and he'd probably tell you what's going on.
