As specialty grocery store sections expand and restaurants offer more vegetarian/vegan options, dietitians and health food companies are weighing the options of non-traditional diets.

That's a nice, positive article, although one thing in it still bugs me:

Nutrients once thought to be unattainable in meatless diets — such as vitamin B-12 and iron — can now be ingested through supplements, Camire said, but said she still recommends consulting a registered dietitian before making the dietary switch.

Since there are so many plant foods with iron, why would anybody have to take iron supplements? That's flat out misinformation. Plus, LOTS of people have made the switch without consulting a registered dietitian. And not everybody has access to one. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing - a veg-friendly dietitian can provide a lot of useful information - but not all dietitians ARE veg friendly, and they may try to discourage potential converts to veganism.

I agree with Amy. It's neat to see positive coverage of the increasing popularity of veg*nism, but I have 2 problems with that article. Veg*nism is not a medical condition requiring professional supervision. You might as well say people should consult a doctor before they stop smoking. Also, Galaxy does not make vegan cheeses AFAIK. I think all their products contain casein.

Actually Galaxy Nutritional Foods DOES make vegan slices. I have to have them special ordered at my health food store, but some day they may make it to your grocer as a staple.

I have only tried the American and I like it. It is perfect with triscuits, as grilled "cheese" and on a soy burger. http://www.galaxyfoods.com/ourbrands/usa/vegan.asp

I didn't like how the article said
"vegan foods are not going to be as available in restaurants and supermarkets,” Camire said.

What F'd up grocery store does he shop at that doesn't carry fruit, vegetables and pasta!!

Huh. The ones that are in my grocery store are all the casein ones, and I've just been avoiding anything that says Galaxy ever since.

I just bought some (Galaxy: american flavor) on Thursday. It says 100% non dairy, casein & lactose free. On a banner across the front of the package. Printed on the bottom it says Gluten Free, and on the back under the ingredients it say: Allergy alert: contains soy ingredients. Also says colesterol free, 0g trans fat. But I think I have bought it before (memory fadding), and didn't like the taste so will see what happens next time I smother that Boca Buger (original Vegan). LOL
