Bleh I feel bad.
My mom bought mc donalds for supper and so I said get a veggie burger if they have 'em and it turns out they don't. So she bought me a salad but it was a freakin' chicken ceasar salad with a buttload of bacon on it and ceasar dressing... I didn't eat the chicken and tried to pick out the bacon bits(but there was still alot in it) but she was just like "It's not gonna kill ya". I just didn't want to tell her that I didn't want to eat it. When she eats meat she'll be like mmm this chicken's really good and it's like... frustrating. It's not like.. she's not supportive it's just asdfgh I don't know.
Sorry for that.. rant.

Most people just don't understand. Give her some slack to coming to terms with it. Maybe someday down the road she'll understand more. Most people don't understand what is meat and what isn't. You will be okay, but take it easy for now.

I've heard the asian chicken salad without the chicken is pretty good.

I totally get where you're coming from, my mother does the same thing except she makes it known it's on purpose. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty about not eating meat even if they did buy it for you. I know it is hard to do but you'll get so tired of it that eventually you wont give a damn! :D

Some parents get really worried when their kids stop eating animal products. What in the world will you eat? Surely you're going to become a malnourished waif! It's hard to strike a balance between letting your kids explore and make their own decisions and fulfilling your responsibility as a parent to keep them safe and healthy. It sometimes causes them to do very frustrating things - like buying us chicken Caesar salads. It's maddening, but it will probably get better. Stand by your convictions, but be gentle with them. ^^
These days, I live over 1000 miles from my parents, so Mom settles for full reports on my dietary habits. Are you getting enough protein? What about iron? She wants numbers. I give them to her, because she's my mother and I don't like her to worry about me.

Yeah McDonalds only non-meat food would be like fries. My parents are really supportive of it, they try to take me places where I can get a meal that will actually be more then lettuce on a bun. But some people don't understand, its about you pushing yourself not to eat it and you are the only person that can do it. Don't feel bad most bacon bits are made out of soy anyways.

not that it matters, but I used to live in Greenwich Village and most of the McDonalds in Lower Manhattan have "McVeggies". However, I don't eat anything with a Mc in front of its name on princible, veggie or not.

Nah-Na: Actually, they use beef in their fries! No joke.
But the caesar salad without the chicken sounds like a good option. (Skip the caesar if you're vegan? I've never checked the ingredients.)

Actually, real Caesar dressing contains anchovies - so it's not even vegetarian. I think McDonald's uses Newman's Own dressing, which authentically contains the fish. =/

I found out about anchovies being in Ceasar dressing about a year ago when I saw Rachael Ray make it on her show once. I tell people what's in Ceasar dressing and they won't eat it now and those people aren't even vegetarians haha. Most people are grossed out by anchovies though.
To the OP, my mom was the same way at first, telling me that a little bit of something wouldn't kill me. She didn't understand that I wouldn't eat things like chicken broth. The more my mom learned about why I was a vegetarian and saw that I was sticking to it, the better she got. I have made my parents some dishes and they have really enjoyed them. My mom will request them often, so that's really cool. Maybe you can cook for your family sometime. Best to you!

Even when I was omni I didn't eat at McDonalds. Their burgers are so many levels of gross.
I did like the fries but didn't eat them very often because it was so rare to find myself in a McDonalds.

I was walking around manhattan once and saw they had McVeggies - I think they used Quorn! Of course I wont step one foot in there - I wont even buy bottled water from McDonalds. Their fries are NOT vegetarian, they lied about it for years, and that is just NOT cool.

I can't figure out why on earth the McDonalds people thought the fries would be better with beef flavoring.
I like my fries potato flavored.

Oh man, me too. I've always hated McDonald's. I was probably the only kid I knew who did.
When I would get dragged there as a child, I'd order a hamburger and pick off the disgusting green disks they call pickles (they rehydrate their pickles...why, exactly? It's not like pickles can go bad — isn't that the whole point of pickling something?) and I'd scrape off the concentrated mustard and the ketchup that tasted like no other ketchup I have ever tasted, at least not without cutting it with nineteen-parts vinegar.
The raw onion bits? They got smeared right down the side of the tray.
Why didn't I ask for a hamburger with nothing on it you ask? You fool! Because it's McDonald's and, as Dave Barry once wrote:
It may be the best marketing concept I have seen since back in the 1970s, when McDonald's, which does not wait on your table, does not cook your food to order, and does not clear your table, came up with the slogan "We Do It All For You."
Oh, I once, during a drunken bachelor party, tried their McVeggie Burger in fit of munchies. McDonald's somehow managed to make it taste like it was cooked in a hockey bag. God it was Shastay McNasty. They don't still sell those do they?
Cheers!

Uhhgh- xx-panic, that soundsl ike it was an awful dinner. Don't worry about what you ate then, most of us have had moments like that when we were first transitioning.
I would advise you to learn as much about nutrition as you can so you will have the knowlege to feel secure in your choice and deal with any questions your mom or relatives may have. And a good survival strategy is going to be always carry a bit of vegetarian food with you, be it a granola bar, or a luna/lara bar, some trail mix or nuts or dried fruit. Having something like this will tide you over until you can get home or somewhere else and have some real food.
It sucks when your family isn't supportive, just be sure to stay strong and know that what you're doing is best for you, the environment and the animals :)

McDonald's cooked their fries in beef tallow until they received enough complaints that they switched to vegetable oil in the early '90s. But, since the reason their fries had reigned supreme atop the oily masses of the fast food industry was because of the beefy flavor that frying in tallow had given them, they thought, "You know...let's head on over to the factories on the New Jersey turnpike which produce artificial/natural flavoring and see what they can do for us."
So the "natural" flavoring in their fries comes from beef. I guess their logic for this is that we pesky vegetarians can just pick out the natural flavoring, can't we?! Jeez. We're so picky.

I've always loved fast food, especially McD's fries and Coke. I only went vegetarian a few weeks ago, but that's been one of the hardest things to stop eating! I'm eating healthier only because I can't have most of the stuff I used to eat. I'm rarely in a drive thru now!
My dentist made me give up all soft drinks this spring. That was really hard too! But since I was pretty successful at it, I finally determined I could go vegetarian too.

It is tough when you first switch your diet. My parents had fun making fun of me and commenting on how they will sneak meat into my meals. Now years later my mom goes out of her way to make sure I have something to eat and the comments have pretty much stopped completely.

Depends on where you live. If you live in Australia, you have a choice of a garden salad and various little snacks that have no meat or dairy or eggs (e.g. apples).:bobo: Nothing you can't make at home, but it may make your mum feel better if you are eating what they are eating (in general, mcdonalds...).

ya, what’s with that? seriously, Canada and the states have the most unhealthy fast food places that are insanely greasy and who knows what else. but then you can go to the same fast food chain somewhere overseas and they actually try to make everything healthy o__O i have this friend who goes to France pretty much every other year or something like that. apparently the fast food places like McDonald’s and such over there are actually good places to go get some food o__o

doesn't caesar dressing have egg whites in it? i think i remember hearing something along those lines... but dont hold me to it, haven't checked the ingredient list in what must be years
