Every year I'm in charge of my parent's gardening - they have a big four level rock garden coming out from the woods and a lot of landscaping (I could weed and plant flowers all day!) I always have a lot of fun with it. I've been interested in growing vegetables but since we're surrounded by woods and lots of little furry creatures that seem like they might like to eat the vegetables, I haven't really given it a try. Any suggestions on what to plant or how to keep out them away?

There were zillions of bunnies here, then the foxes started living here, now there are not so many. I've read rabbit fences have to be made of chicken wire buried a foot deep.

My mother puts chicken wire around the most tantalizing plants (but not buried) to deter rabbits, but then she also plants some outside the fence for the rabbits, figuring they will have less incentive to get at the fenced area. It seems to work for her. Basically, her philosophy is to plant extra, for the animals. :D

aww that's nice of her. i was thinking if i decided to grow veggies it'd be just for fun and i wouldn't mind seeing the rabbits make off with some of it cause it'd mean they'd be hanging out in my yard more and i could get pics :)

by the time the people our landlord hired came and cut the grass, it was so long that when my bf saw a rabbit and it heard his footsteps it ducked down and all he could see of it were the tips of it's ears. :D

Sometimes we see mice hanging off our gooseberry bushes like acrobats, it's so funny we just let them get on with it.
This morning I looked out the dining room window and saw a squirrel on the roof of my car eyeing up the nearby bird peanut feeder. Only the car roof was wet and he was slipping and skating all over the roof until he slid right off.
It's a wonder I get anywork done here I spend so much time laughing at the goings on outside...
