any other veg*ns have it? what do you do/take for it?

i also apparently have liver and gallbladder issues. apparently my body is not flushing out toxins effectively, yet i barely eat any toxins. my diet consists mainly of whole veggies, grains and fruits. very little, if any processed foods....

thoughts? suggestions? similar stories?

I had graves disease years ago and had the radioactive iodine. Luckily for me it didn't destroy the entire thyroid so it's still able to produce some. For years, even after going vegetarian, I had to take synthroid daily. However, once I changed to a all natural vegan diet, I've been able to stop taking the synthroid all together. And now that I've gone mostly raw I feel better than ever.

I have hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). The condition was diagnosed about three years ago. I take 125 mcg of Levothyroxine every day.

I resent the fact that, although I am a vegetarian and have a healthier diet than a lot of people, I have put on a lot of weight! The medication is supposed to control weight gain (I guess someone forgot to tell my pills that!)

I have throid underactivity. I take Lorna VanderHaeghe's ThyroSense & see a naturopath regularly. It's helping, but all of your glands may be affected, so you should really see a naturopath (bring your bloodwork) & check it out. My thyroid is malfunctioning because my adrenals are wrecked from stress, so I'm working that out with herbs under her supervision.

I have hypothroidism as well. And have fought the symptoms even more until I read a thread on the no soy when taking meds for thyroid. Sure enough it was listed as a no no on the synthroid site. I stopped soy and have lost weight without changing my caloric intake or exercise routine.

You may want to stop your soy intake for 4-6 weeks and see what happens.

Thanks for the response, SeaSiren.

I'm not sure that I have a high soy intake anyway (I'm having a Sunday night vague moment and can't think what foods contain soy - but my diet tends to consist of veg, pasta or rice.)

Is the synthyroid site on the Veggieboards? I shall take a look!

Thanks again for shaing your findings!

I am hypothyroid. I tried some natural methods of dealing with it for a while and I was incredibly miserable. Not saying it doesn't work for anyone, but it certainly didn't in my case. So, I take 100mcg of levoxyl a day. I feel soooo much better. I quit eating soy too...it was really bothering me. I have a soy sensitivity though, I didn't quit it necessarily because of the thyroid problems.

Eekamax -: I didn't see your issue. Do you suffer from a distinct thyroid disease like hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's or is it that you fear to develop something? Or is it hyperthyroidism?
I don't eat much processed food either and Germany/lots of parts of Europe are iodine deficient. Most places in the U.S.A. are iodine rich in contrast. So I eat regularly seaweed, so I don't have to worry about getting enough iodine. In hyperthyroidism iodine is contraindicated.

went to a naturopath. i took the long test...i forget what it is called. anyway my results were liver/gallbladder (my body is not flushing toxins properly) and thyroid issues. i seem to have a slight mix of hypo and hyper. i have all of the hypo symtoms, except weight. that part falls under hyper. i eat and eat and never gain weight.

i'd prefer to stay off meds if possible. he wants to put me on a strict diet and herbal supplements for 2 weeks to see how i feel.

i was just wondering what everyone else was taking for it. i eat a vegan diet, and like i said, very little processed foods. although i do eat a lot of soy...someone mentioned soy clashing with thyroid issues? or is it just the meds that clash with soy?

i could add more seaweed into my diet. i used to eat it quite a bit before going veg, as i was a sushi lover. *off to google*

If you think something's wrong with your thyroid gland, have a lab test for TSH, T3 and T4 done.
If you are in hyperthyroid metabolism, more iodine (seaweed!) would increase your problems.

Thanks for the info, at the health store the women there gave me info about the at home test you can take to see if that is the problem, i was a bit leary about the whole thing... I guess i'll take the product back and get it refunded.
My body is totally out of wack since i was one of those that used mahung nd ephedra and lost alot then regained it when they took it off the market.. I just assumed after all of that, that this may have helped. Thanks again for the info and any sugesstions for someone who hates exercise?? lol
