If there was an award for best tofu ever, this place would get it, hands down. In every entree, one of the choices is tofu & veggies and on the menu, there's a little leaf by the entrees that are vegetarian if you order it with the tofu & veggies option (I guess the other stuff has broth in it.) Their food is divine. The tofu is really firm and tastes amazing. I'm guessing that they use marinated baked tofu and then slice it really thin and then stir-fry it in some oil to crisp it up (I'm going to try to duplicate it at home - wish me luck.) The vegetables are really fresh and crisp. Also on the entrees that come with rice, you have a choice between white and brown (the brown is really good.) I've had the honey seared tofu (obviously not vegan) and also the japanese udon noodles with veggies and tofu. The japanese udon noodles had tons of fresh ****ake mushrooms in it and the sauce was to die for. As far as appetizers go, the spring rolls are fabulous and so is the steamed edamame. Oh, and they're more than willing to substitute tofu in the kids menu (most restaurants only have a choice between chicken and burgers.)

Unfortunately the one in the San Diego area is really far away from where I live and work. We've eaten at the one in Las Vegas a couple of times.

I love Pei Wei! There's one within walking distance fro my house which is really convenient. The spring rolls are some of te best I've had and the tofu is perfect. My favorites are the teriyaki bowl, sweet and sour tofu and soba miso bowl. I didn't care for the udon noodles (sauce asted weird) but that's the only disappointment I've ever had there.

I have never been to Pei Wei, but one is going in near me, so I guess I'll have to try it.

There are no Pei Wei's around here. *sigh*. They sound so good. The nearest one looks like there's one opening in Overland Park in September, but that's like three hours away.
And I've always spelled it shiitake, which seems to be the correct spelling from dictionary.com.

^^^ Katt's right, shiitake is the right spelling.

I've been to the Pei Wei in OKC, and I enjoyed it. The steamed edamame was, in short, :lick:  :lick:

I'd go back just for that. :)

OK, so I'm not the best speller in the world :)

I agree. Best tofu ever. My favorites are the soba miso bowl and the teriyaki bowl.

It's owned by PF Chang's, and the food at Pei Wei is mostly the same as PF Chang's, but you get way more (I usually have enough leftovers for another whole meal), it's way cheaper, and way faster. :)

That's OK, shiitake isn't one of those words they teach you in grade school. :)

yeah, its baked

if you don't want to make it from scratch, I have found the white wave baked tofu to have a similar texture

Yippe, just 45 minutes for me. :p

Now I feel bad, because I think there has been one <20 minutes away from me for at least a year, and I haven't gone because I considered it "too far away to bother with." But my excuse is I didn't know how much everyone loved it!

We ate at the Pei-Wei on my birthday-it was terrific!! I liked the Udon best. It was so much better than Pick-Up-Stix.

Oh wow, I just loooove Pei Wei. I've only been there 3 times, but it's definitely something I like to treat myself to. The spring rolls are to die for. Last time I was there, I ordered the blazing noodles after being reassured it was vegan. I ordered it with tofu and extra veggies. It was so flippin' spicy hot, but so gosh darn good. :lick:

I went today after reading about all the yummy veggie-friendly food, and I was not disappointed. Yum! I had the Spicy Korean plate with veggies and tofu. I tried tofu once before at a thai place and didn't like it, but it was AMAZING here. I love how brown rice is an option. So good. Will be going again soon.

It was so much better than Pick-Up-Stix.
Is it really?

I stay loyal to Pick Up Stix, the orange peel tofu is phenomenal, as are the lettuce wraps. They have brown rice also. There is a Pei Wei within 10 miles of me, but I don't see how their tofu could be better than Pick Up Stix. I'll have to try it one of these days.

You can get the lettuce wraps at pickup stix without the chicken? Cool!

The tofu at Pei Wei is completely different than the tofu at pickup stix. It has a different texture and flavor. I like them both but the tofu at pei wei is totally droolworthy.

I went.
It was okay...I was not amazed.
I got the miso bowl...I've had better. THe tofu....I've had better(at P.F.Chang's)
The system...you stand in line to order and then sit down and wait for your food get a 2 thumbs v
I was not impressed, my mom and I were happy we when to Communitea cafe for dinner the night before and only had Pei Wei for lunch.
We're not going back.
