Does anybody have any suggestions for hair care products?I've been all over the internet looking for shampoos, conditoners, etc etc and the only items I can find are at salons and are probably really expensive.I believe the stuff that I'm using now(Infusium,Garnier,Dove)are all tested on animals.

I like IO. Many places carry it here (CA) and it is not tested on animals and has no animal in it.

Arbonne has nice shampoos and a conditioner that are vegan and not tested on animals. They are more pricey than your typical drugstore hair products, but you may find it worth it. :) You can visit my website or PM me if you are interested!

Dove isn't animal tested, I'm not sure about the others. I like Nature's Gate a lot.

Giovanni is really good too. No animal products, not animal tested, organic and SLS free.

Last I knew Unilever (Dove) DOES test on animals.

I swear last I knew Garnier (L' Oreal) DIDN'T test on animals, but now I just went to double check, and they're on the DO test on animals list. Hmm..

2. What is the DoveŽ policy on animal testing?

Answer:
Dove and Unilever share your concern over this important matter and we are committed to the elimination of animal testing. We do NOT test any of our home or personal care products on animals. We will continue to work for alternative methods by participating in industry and scientific programs as well as to support legislation that promotes the elimination of animal testing.

By the way- I've seen that unilever claim before. Yet I can't find anything else that says they've stopped testing on animals. They're still on peta's hit list, as well as every other animal-testing list i've seen.

Anyone? Anyone know why Unilever is still on the tests-on-animals lists, if they claim to have stopped animal testing 6 years ago? I remember when I first saw that, I was thrilled cuz I used to love Dove shampoo/conditioner. I emailed peta and never got a response.

See that's where I get confused cos you go to a particular company's website and they claim that they do NOT test on animals but then you go to peta's site and look at the list and they say that they DO test on animals.Or at least they think they do. It's really confusing!
Raw jess-I love Dove's products!I really hope they aren't animal tested.
Veggiejane-Thanks for the info. I 'll check into those products as soon as I aquire some money!:)
Thanks also to Cissy and Cinnamon Toast :)

What kinds of beauty products in general do you guys like to use?

maybe they test ingredients, or formulas on animals, but not the final product. Also they may not have given PETA a signed statement since they stopped testing. The only way to know for-sure is to contact the company and ask them if any ingredients, formulas or finnish products are tested on animals.

I've also seen people on this board say that Colgate-Palmolive Co. has not tested it's products on animals for years, but there are still on PETA's list too.

How often does Peta actually update their list? That could be a factor. I only heard of unilever stopping testing a few months ago.

I don't know. I sent them another email today. The automated reply says it can take up to 2 weeks for a response. Unilever claims to have stopped in 2000. 6 years is enough time to update a list, I'd think! Also I'm reading conflicting information on Colgate-Palmolive, so I asked them about that, too. Hopefully I'll get a response this time!

PETA updates their list several times a year, thats one of the reasons I use their list.

That's what I thought. Well I thought it was annual, but still.

Maybe I'll re-try some Paul Mitchell. I always liked the styling foam. Maybe I can find a decent shampoo & conditioner of his. Or i'll go back to citre shine, since L'Oreal/John Frieda's parent companies test. BOOOOOOOO! Brilliant Brunette was great.

While there are companies that clearly state "We never test on animals" there are many companies that play with words using terms like "finished products not tested", or maybe a parent company does the deed as is the case with Neurtrogena. Sometimes only new products are the culprit: maybe your old soap is okay but once it morphs a "new scent" thousands of animals have worn it already or, at best, maybe it never changes but just down the hall new lotions are being made. At this point the question becomes whether you want to support a company that still employs animal experimentation at any stage for a beauty/household product when there are alternatives available. I've found PETA's list to be updated several times a year and also, The National Anti-Vivisection Society has a site where you can type in a company name and they will tell you if they are cruelty-free or not (sorry, I can't post links yet).

Good luck everyone, I am muddling through this mess like the rest and all information is greatly appreciated. Let's keep making a difference :)

How do I find out what companies make products I use? Like Suave shampoo/conditioner, Aim toothpaste, etc.?

eta: nevermind, I found it. It's Unilever Manufactoring - they test.

I sent an email to Unilever. This was their response (bolding done by me):

Hello Jessica,

This is in response to your inquiry regarding our policy on animal testing. The statement on our website is one for Unilever Worldwide. Unilever understands and shares your concern about this most important and complex matter. We are committed to the elimination of animal testing for our business and recently we have made significant progress towards meeting this challenge.

Our position has historically been that we do not test any finished home or personal care product on animals, except where required by government regulation. However, as part of our ongoing commitment to eliminate animal testing, we recently reviewed these specific government regulations against the products we manufacture and market. During this review it became clear to us, that the only product category that required testing was oral care. However, as you may have heard, Unilever no longer manufactures oral care products. This means that we can now definitively state that Unilever does not test home or personal care products, including toothpaste, on animals.

Our first priority continues to be to our consumers, and where required for safety reasons we will have to carry out limited tests on some ingredients and food products. We will continue our work for alternative methods by participating in industry and scientific programs, and we will continue to support legislation that promotes the elimination of animal testing.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us and for giving us the opportunity to respond. Let me assure you that your comments are extremely valuable to us and will be shared with those persons responsible for our product safety.

Thank you for contacting us.

Your friends at Unilever U.S.

VC

Okay so then Unilever products like Dove and Sunsilk are a go...?Why don't they label them as not tested on animals?

currently i am using the brand pureology... it is amazing! vegan and not tested! pricey. available in salons most places.
arbonne is good, too! downside is have to order and wait. pricey but cheaper than pureology.
GHD (good hair day) is a brand out of britain that is great too. somewhat expensive, not all products are vegan, but none are tested.
giovanni is the best, IMO, of readily available and fairly aaffordable.
aveda is a good choice, too
you just have to play around and see what works for your hair.

ABBA and AVEDA hair products are all cruelty free and devoid of animal ingredients.. if you're looking for something non-professional, Kiss My Face and Giovanni have great lines but you'll never find them in the drugstore (because the drugstore is evil!)

I'd say they're a no-go. They're still on the tests-on-animals lists, and they said they don't test their FINISHED products on animals.

Citre Shine is good. I prefer their old, OLD formula (2 bottle designs ago.) but their current stuff is better than most.

I've heard good things about Pureology, but never tried it. Any specific shampoos/conditioners from that line you recommend?
