Coincidentally, I was researching this ingredient last night. Apparently, glycerin is a byproduct from soap-making:
The process of removing the glycerin from the soap is fairly complicated (and of course, there are a lot of variations on the theme). In the most simplest terms: you make soap out of fats and lye. The fats already contain glycerin as part of their chemical makeup (both animal and vegetable fats contain from 7% - 13% glycerine). When the fats and lye interact, soap is formed, and the glycerin is left out as a "byproduct".http://www.pioneerthinking.com/glycerin.html
As mentioned, the soap can be made from animal fats, in which case the gylcerin is technically an animal product. Some companies use only glycerin derived from vegetable oil, making it animal-free, but according to the article, it's possible that it has been filtered through charcoal (which could be made from animal bone).
If you choose not to use the Sortkwik, maybe you could use a one of these items instead?
