Dear Sir/Madam:

I would like to purchase Kao brands such as Jergens, John Frieda, Ban,
Biore, Curel. However, I do not feel confident using personal care items
that are deemed safe in animal tests. With growing recognition of the
inability to extrapolate data from animals to people, I have chosen to
exclusively buy products approved in non-animal studies.

Can you please update me on your testing policies? I will gladly share your
statement with other conscientious consumers.

As you know, the Consumer Product Safety Commission does not require animal
testing for household goods (1). The Food and Drug Administration does not
stipulate animal studies for cosmetics (2). Over 600 cruelty-free companies
now manufacture quality products using non-animal systems more relevant to
human health and safety.

I am concerned about the rising number of animal-tested goods that are
recalled or relabeled due to harmful repercussions in people. If you have
not done so already, I urge you to transition to human-focused methods that
vary from cell and tissue cultures to computerized "structure-activity
relationship" models.

Corrositex, for example, is a human skin equivalent that eliminates the need
for animals in skin corrosion tests. The Epipack Test (cloned human skin
cells to assess response to a skin irritant) can supplant Draize skin tests
in which chemicals seep into the fur-stripped skin of immobilized animals
for days to weeks.

Episkin (3-dimensional human skin model) and EpiDerm (neonatal skin cells
cultivated into 3-D tissue to simulate human skin) are scientifically
validated alternatives to smearing an animal's back with caustic chemicals.
Both tests are accepted globally as complete replacements for rabbit skin
corrosion studies (3).

The cell-based 3T3 Neutral Red Uptake Phototoxicity Test is yet another
substantiated alternate to the use of guinea pigs and mice to analyze a
chemical's toxicity under ultraviolet radiation. The 3T3 test furnishes a
dependable measure of sun-stimulated skin irritation.

I strongly encourage Kao Brands Company to embrace human-focused studies
that are more cost-effective, pertinent to people, and humane.

Thank you for your valuable time and consideration,
