Hey, I've been wonder what soymilk, almond milk, or rice milk brands you guys like to drink/buy. My local grocerie store only stocks 8th Continent (yeah I know, it's not vegan), Rice Dream, Silk, a powder version of almond milk, and the store brands soymilk. I buy the store brand, because not only is it vegan, it's about $0.75 cheaper ($2.99 compared to Silk $3.75 where I live). I think it even tastes better.

So, is there any other brands out there that I could keep my eye open for? Do you have store that have cheaper brand that they make?

Do you have to watch for extra sugar in most of them?

Dairy milk is naturally a little sweet (lactose=milk sugar) so most non-dairy "milks" have a little sweetener added to mimic that flavor. You can get unsweetened soymilk (and ricemilk), which I prefer for cooking, but I like the flavor of the regular kind for drinking and in my oatmeal.

IMO, Almond Breeze is the best almond milk, and they have sweetened and unsweetened.

I like the taste of Edensoy Lite over regular Edensoy but I use unsweetened Westsoy.

On Saturday was my first grocery trip as a vegan (I was LO veggie since 98). I bought Rice Dream Vanilla and Original. I tried the vanilla on cereal but found it a little too sweet for my liking and was more thin than real milk. I plan on trying the original tomorrow for breakfast.

Is soy thicker than rice milk?

Almond Breeze #1 in my book.

rice milk is thinner than dairy milk, soy is slightly thicker than dairy in my opinion. i find ricemilk to be naturally quite sweet on its own, and am happy using the unsweetened origional rice dream, and unsweetened chocolate rice dream- either in cooking or just for drinking- similarly with unsweetened no added oil vanilla ryza rice milk. i just personally avoid sugar- plently of people prefer the sweetened versions of rice and soy and almond milk, its a personal taste and choice thing.

soya milk has a pretty distinctive nutty beany taste to it, i find, and i think it works better in breakfast cereals etc, where you want the density that you are used to seeing in dairy milk. both soya and rice milk work equally well in cooking. be careful not to use vanilla soy/rice milk in savoury cooking though, cos it just tastes weird, and when switching these milks for dairy milk, you might need a little more or less because of the change in density.

soya milk does come in loads of different brands, (i think more than rice milk does) all with slightly different tastes to them, so its worth trying a few different ones to see if there is one you like more than the others- i'm pretty sure you can also get strawberry, chocolate and chai flavoured soymilks, as well as soyamilk and fruit smoothie blends, etc, too... and then there is the whole subject of soya yogurts, soya icecream, soya sour cream, soya creamcheese, etc etc etc!

i've never tried almond milk though, as i can't find an unsweetened one near me, so can't comment on that. you can also make your own soya, almond, and rice milks- orapunzel has recently posted what looks like a really easy and tasty ricemilk reciepe in the receipes section, if you're interested in looking into that idea as well.

Here's something I found recently that has a lot of info on non-dairy milks, it is form 2001 so some of the info could have changed, but for the most part I find it useful

I absolutely love all the Silk flavors! I had to gradually get a taste for the original flavor, which was the first one I ever tried. But after that one, I've loved them all! I just bought Rice Dream, I think it's called? Haven't tried it yet, though.. :)

Yeah, I've only tried Silk, 8th Continent, and the store brand soy milks.....I'll have to try Rice Dream soon, I think it's cheaper around here. I like the chocalate soy milk to drink, and the unsweetened in my cereal, and for vegan cookies......
