I found a new health food store that sells all the worthington and loma linda products, we had the worthington dinner loaf the other night and it is awesome! so yummy. tasted like a turkey loaf, we had it with mashed pot and veggies, i also tried some vegetarian gravy i found there as well. it was hain brand.
but anyway the dinner loaf is def worth checking out, it would make a good meal for holidays and such,
oh and the funny thing, when we were eating, my hubby (omni) said " this is really good, it tastes like real turkey"...........my 6 yo replied " yes but no animal had to die for it".............hehe i guess she does listen to me. ha ha.

I haven't tried the Worthington Brand, thanks for the suggestion. I'm always looking for new things to make for dinner!

Worthington and Loma Linda are faux meat products manufactured by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, so you can often find them if you look in the phone book for an Adventist church or Adventist Book and Food Store (sometimes called an "ABC" or Adventist Book Center - they sell all their lines of faux meats at the book stores too.)

DON'T WORRY! They won't try to convert you or anything.

Anyway, the products - Some are vegan, some are not. Some are pretty tasty, some resemble dogfood at it's worst. They're worth trying though. My kids have several Worthington products that they love.

Lots of sodium and chemicals though, I could do without those. They HAVE come out wih a line of products that are called "Natural Touch" that are similar but supposedly healthier. I'll have to see next time I'm at my local Adventist store.

thanks tempeh! i didnt know they were made by the seventh day adventist church! this health food store was connected to an adventist book store, thats why i had no idea it was there, someone told me. im not seventh day adventist.
i will have to look for the healthier line next trip. i hate all the chem and preservatives in some of the products but they are good to have on hand for quick stuff sometimes.

Oh believe me, I have a TON of the stuff because my kids really seem to like it. Wasn't criticizing at ALL!

Try the Worthington or Loma Linda Vegetarian Burger (it's in a can! ACK!) but if you crumble it out with a fork, (don't smell it or you're done for!) into a fry pan, sautee with oil, chopped onions, chopped bell peppers, etc and then add a couple cans tomaot sauce and a packet Taco Seasoning and simmer, simmer, simmer - you have the BEST taco meat ANYWHERE... hands down!! My teens serve it to friends all the time and NO ONE has ever asked "what is this stuff?"...

But yeah.. the whole concept of "meat-in-a-can" was pretty hard to grasp at first.

If I think about it, there's a couple other items that they make that are vegan and fairly good too - can't remember what they are off hand though...

(ETA: Oh, after some looking it appears Loma Linda brand was made by the SDA church up until 1990 when it was bought by Worthington Foods, who in turn was bought by Kelloggs in 1999).

They're probably my least favorite (taste-wise) faux meat brand. Though I love Morningstar (also made by Kelloggs) the best and a lot of people dislike them.

Wow, thanks for all the information everybody. I do like Morningstar Farms, but have never tried Worthington- all the packaging design looks straight out of the 70s, which kinda' makes you think the boxes have been sitting there that long. :) But I'll be brave. (I still can't bring myself to get "cans" of meat though.) I never even ate that stuff when I did eat meat!

Yeah, the packaging makes it look more freakish than it is...

Not my favorite, but handy when it's the only thing available for faux "meats" or you're camping and low on refrigeration (NOT backpacking-camping obviously!).

The Companion (and other Asian brand) brand faux meats (made in Tiawan I guess actually) are the original Chinese-style canned seitan/gluten products and available in many Asian markets.

I was just trying to find some reviews on Worthington, Loma-Linda products since recently Amazon.com has started including non-perishable groceries. Currently they have a special going on where you get a code that gives you $10 off a purchase of $49 and you can use it as often as you want through Nov 30th. Plus I recently signed up for a free trial of Amazon Prime which gives you free 2-day shipping. Add that with the bulk discounts you often get from buying from Amazon and that's some hefty savings.

Problem is with these bulk items, I'm not familiar with the products and buying 12 (19oz) cans of Vege-burger (http://www.amazon.com/Loma-Linda-Vege-Burger-19-Ounce-Cans/dp/B000AYFAO2/ref=pd_bxgy_gro_img_b/102-2115990-0877726?ie=UTF8) is a pretty big investment for someone on a limited budget.

I've always thought Worthington was the worst. *shiver*
I did like their "beef" stew in a can. I haven't had it in probably a year. I wish they didn't have milk in it. :(
