A large crowd is expected tonight at a public hearing to discuss
amending Smithtown's town code as it relates to animal hospices,
animal boarding and kennels - a move that could effectively shut down
Angel's Gate, an animal hospice in Fort Salonga.

The nonprofit organization has received national and international
attention since a Newsday story in April about tensions between the
hospice and its Josephine Lane neighbors, who insist it should not be
located in a residential neighborhood. They complain about volunteers
coming and going from the home, excessive garbage and noise from more
than 200 disabled or dying animals at the hospice.
