we live in the country.......we have tons of chip munks living around our property, they are always scampering along our stone walls.........anyway, i have 2 kids with the usual array of outdoor toys........my 2 yo has this rocking toy catepillar thing and it got knocked upside down and the last few days we had tons of rain.........so the bottom has a groove large enough to fill with water.......well this morning the sun was finally out and hubby was in the yard and went to turn this toy over and discovered a dead chipmunk in there, it must have fallen in the water and couldnt get back out:cry:

so now i have a mental note to make sure any sand pails, toys, etc that can fill with water are always put away so this cant happen again.
we do have a pool but they must know to stay away from that. i just feel bad the poor chipmunk met its demise in my baby's toy.

That is sad. I imagine the 2-year-old doesn't understand what happened. I hope not!

Be sure to clean the toys really well. Many animals have parasites and other vermin that can be harmful to humans.

Well, in a way it was a good learning experience for your 6 year old (sad aas it seems). 6 is a good time for young ones to have the experience of dealing with a death, developmentally speaking. Perhaps you and your husband can talk to her and help her find ways to honor the poor little creature (leaving notes and flowers on her grave etc.).

Best of luck with however it all works out.

Thanks ahimsa, thats a good idea!
last fall a flying squirrel got trapped in our attic and died, and she was with me when i got the little guy out and buried him! she really handled it well.
she was 4 when one of our dogs died, and i wasnt completely honest, i said the dog was at the vet since the dog was sick ( my dd knew the dog was sick, she had cancer)....so it was nothing new for the dog to be at the vet, but for a long long time even recently she has said something like " when bailey is better and comes home from the vet"..........that makes me feel bad, so the last time she said it, i said something like " i dont think the vet can fix her, she is in doggy heaven" and she said "i know" ........so kids are way smarter than we give them credit for sometimes i think.

That's aweful. Really sorry to hear that. Thanks for posting though.
And as for your pool. If you're interesting (or if anyone else has a pool), did you know that PETA sells a product that you can put in your pool that can save frogs, lizards, or small animals (like squirrels) that may fall in?
It's right here: http://www.petacatalog.org/prodinfo.asp?number=HP210

Wild mice used to fall into buckets in the cellor and drown and once a mouse got into one of my aquariums which was covered up and drowned, I have no idea how the mouse got in.

I dont get how that lily pad works?

It's anchored to the ladder and the little critter can crawl onto the platform and get out of the water instead of swimming and swimming until exhaustion sets in and it drowns. The pool owners would find the animal on the lily pad and release it on dry land.
