Why would there be a moral opposition to Walmart in the first place? I mean as opposed to any other store? It is off topic, but just wondering.

Oh, drat, and I had one other question. I'm married to an orthopedic surgeon, so osteoporosis and calcium are high on his list of concerns. I know that you can get adequate calcium even on a vegan diet, but to ease his mind, I take calcium supplements. Are there vegan calcium supplements? What should I look for - either to get or to avoid?
Thanks again!

You should definitely go visit some forums in other sections (the nutrition one I think has some good ones?) about dairy as it relates to things like osteoporosis... They shocked my socks off!!!
I'll ellaborate if you'd like but I think you'll get better information from the other boards b/c they really know what they're saying... but basically what I've learned is that a person who is concerned about getting enough calcium should stay very far away from cows' milk anyway, so he shouldn't worry about your new diet any more than his I think :)

Many people avoid shopping at places that treat their employees poorly and support sweatshop labor. :notvegan: (*I have *never* shopped there and I *never* will.) Do a search on VB under 'Walmart' or 'Evil' ( ) and you should find a few enlightening threads.

That is a good question.... I have slightly differnet reasons for being veg*an, one main one being that I don't want to support the industries that mass produce animal products (not so much because they're killing animals, but because they've made killing animals into a business and keep the animals confined to horrible lives, raising them to die...). I consider Walmart to be one of the worst kind of these types of places... it's extremely convenient so it fits the average person's lifestyle today, but I just don't like what places like Walmart are doing to bring convenience to people... not sure if that made sense or not? :) Also, I would always rather support a strictly vegetarian or vegan store than a store that has a tiny veg*an section ten feet from the live lobsters :(

Re: Walmart: OK. Just wondering. There isn't one near me, but if there was and it was really the only place that had what I need, I can't really say I wouldn't go there though.

Yep... and that's why I do shop there :) But hopefully sometime down the road I won't have to rely on them anymore...
By the way, how's everyone doing so far??
No dairy for me today! :) Quite an unhealthy day though... but I think it will be like that at first. I'm so excited, though - I turned down doritos! They're definitely a weak spot for me. :)
Funny thing about walmart. I worked there. They treated me better then a CVS I worked at. Alot better actualy. I don't know if that says much about walmart, or much about CVS, but yeah.
Don't work at CVS.

I went to Whole Foods yesterday and the majority of what I bought was vegan. Everything I went in there with the inention to buy was vegan. Then I impulsively grabbed two things that I don't even need in the first place and didn't think to read the label til I got home.

Take it back, lol.
I bought a few asian dishes from WholeFoods, got home and found out they had anchovy extract. :spew:
Back to the store they went!

Yea, I had a bunch of Morningstar Farm stuff at my place for when I'm too busy or too lazy to cook, and I just realized they aren't vegan :( Guess it's gonna be raw foods for me when I get lazy!

Cheese is probably one of the things I miss least. You've come this far-it shouldn't be hard.

Back in March I decided I'd like to try being vegan for a month, just because, so I did it all of April. (And loved it.) The first time I tried cheese again it tasted disgusting (and I've always been a major cheese lover).
Anyway, I decided a few days ago that I just had to become vegan again. The thing is, my mom decided to go vegan with me for that month, so now she thinks she knows all about it. The whole month she complained about all she was being deprived of, and when you focus on how deprived you feel then of course you'll feel that way. (Plus she also was trying to lose weight.)
So hopefully my parents will let me stay vegan. I've tried to make it clear that I just can't eat animal products anymore, but still my mom keeps offering me things like macaroni and cheese.

Ah yea... I went through that, too..... I really hope it works out okay... Good luck! Hope to hear back from you about how it's going!! :)
And, finally, ("If you try it and miss the greasy saltiness of cheese, try some chilli oil and a bit of salt on top of the veggies - yum! ") -- what's chili oil? Can anyone give me a brand name?
Thanks!
Winnie
Hi Winnie
I just put a load of dried chilli flakes into a bottle of olive oil (one with a 'pourer' type spout), and shake it up. You then have chilli oil ready to put on anything you like!

OH OH OH OH! I can help there. My family lovestacos and I thought the same thing, how can I have a taco without cheese?? lol The first night I made one up with just taco "meat" and better than sour cream and it was ok but nothing to rave about. The next time I made one I shredded cabbage and carrot and I cooked them up with a very small (mild I can't take things too spicy) chili pepper that I minced up and various spices (can't remember what exactly, maybe cumin, garlic, salt and cilantro) and I threw that on my taco with the meat and sour cream. It was *really* good and I didn't even miss the cheese anymore. I don't heavily spice the meat for the filling so it wasn't an overload of spices, if yours is you can cut back on the spices in the cabbage mix. I just cooked it until the cabbage and carrots softened. You can also make the nacho cheese sauce in the recipe section here and pour that over your taco (or break up your taco shell and make nachos).
I think the *trick here is to let go of your notions about how food should look. I know, at first, it was hard for me to cook vegetarian because I always saw vegetables as a side dish to meat. I couldn't figure out how to cook so that vegetables were the star. When I decided to jump into veganism it was hard to imagine certain foods without the requisite cheese. You just have to start stepping outside the box. Cookbooks really help here. Once you make a few recipes from a vegan cookbook it can help you to see food away from dairy and egg products. When you're raised to have these things as normal it can be quite a shift to suddenly take them out of the equation!

Truthfully, I worked at McDonalds for 7 years. Still hands down the best job I've ever had. When people start going on about the evil McD's, I sort of just can't relate. No one I worked with was unhappy working there, at least no more unhappy than they'd be working at any other place.
Right or wrong, I shop at Walmart because they have what I need at a price I can afford. I already make what I can by hand and the health food store charges WAY too much for their stuff. I simply can't afford to pay those prices. Walmart fills the gap. They may be evil, lots of places are. I'm sure GM is evil too but I still needed my car. :)

I was actually thinking of bringing back the crepes because I have no idea why I bought them. I thought they looked cool. I got home and realized I haven't a clue what I can do with them. And they were 4.99. If I really wanted crepes (and knew what to do with them) I could probably find them for less. But the other item, mini corn muffins, I was actually s-m-r-t enough to open them and eat a few before reading the label.
ETA: Ew. I never ate anchovies even before I was veg.

They will take them back even though they are open and partially eaten. Crepes are VERY easy (and cheap) to make! :)

Well, I am taking the crepes back this evening.
They wouldn't take back my $20 bottle of gum though. Which I guess makes sence considering I chewed around 200 of the 300 pieces.
I gave it to my roomate, meh.

For reals.
I love tacos. mmm mm.
Soft Tacos especialy. not the absolute healthiest way but,
I like a thick layer of guacamole, layer of salsa, some vegan crumbles, tomatoes, lettuce.
another way is a layer of vegenaise in place of guac.
mmmmm...guac....mmmm...

How many pieces were there to start with?
I gave my Kraft mac and cheese to my rommate.
Whole Foods should take the crepes back though. They are nice there. I still can't believe I impulsively bought them for no practical reason. I don't do that often. Must have had a brain fart or something.
