Yea, we don't believe animals' flesh belongs in our stomachs, but I think putting it in the trash is even more disrespectful.
I agree completely - I'm glad to hear someone else say it as well; I've gotten some flack for voicing that opinion on here :)

I know. Back during Lent, I ate vegan every Friday, and started to feel a little guilty because it was so easy. I was like "Oh God, what a cop-out" to myself. But i did end up going without somethings on those days. If I randomly wanted ice cream I wouldn't go out and buy vegan stuff, I just didn't have any. Just ate meals and no extra stuff.

I don't understand why someone should deliberately waste something.

I get the "animals just aren't food" thing a lot ... which I understand, if that's how they feel, but ...... eh, I guess even though we all share similar diets it doesn't mean we all carry the same beliefs, huh :) But I do think most people would agree that the food should at least be given away if not eaten. I've been learning a lot more about freeganism lately, and that's one of their strong beliefs; they'll eat meat if it means not wasting it.

I don't consider animals to be food either, but when a piece of flesh is cooked up and on a plate, it is food now, whether I like it or not, and I am not about to add more vanity to its already unjust death by disposing of it. Not that I would eat it myself at all, though.

Good points. I usually give meat leftovers that my folks and friends plan to throw out to my cat or my neighbors' dogs (so long as it's a food that's good for the cat or dog).

Well, after doing so well for the last couple of weeks, I slipped today and didn't even enjoy it. I took my kids out for breakfast and didn't plan ahead well enough to eat in advance. I had a blueberry muffin. It was the best choice available at the bakery where we were, and even though I didn't ask, I'm sure it probably had butter and eggs. It wasn't even good, but boy, was I hungry.
Drat. Drat. Drat.
Oh, well. Back on the wagon.

Going vegan is a big step (I believe). Most people make a few mistakes at first; I don't see anything wrong with that. You learn from your mistakes - I'd be willing to bet you won't be having another blueberry muffin any time soon! :)
I've been having an especially hard time lately working at McDonalds... I came dangerously close to fixing myself a fudge sundae today.... It's just too much... So I'm putting in an application to Moe's and hopefully I'll be long gone from McD's pretty soon, and working at a restaurant where my beliefs are actually respected!! :) Fingers crossed!

I agree with what Moe said, don't be so hard on yourself! To me looking back becoming vegetarian seemed sooo, what's the word, inconvenient, until I became more conscious of what I was actually putting into my mouth, kwim?
Now while trying to transition into veganism, I've found myself looking at it the same exact way. I just have to become more "aware" of everything that I hadn't considered before.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is, anything that changes things the way you've ever done them is just going to take a bit more thought. For you to even think about what was in the muffin and how much you hated the thought of eating it, says ALOT about how far you've come!!
Keep up the good work and congratulations on your new awareness!!!

Hey all! Hope everyone's still doing alright??
I got pretty close to eating cheese again yesterday... on pizza - again... haha. But it's getting much easier to turn dairy down because I know that 10 minutes from saying 'no' to it, I'll feel much better it ... anyway, how's everyone else doing?
By the way ... I'm attempting to get another (4th!) job, and if I get it, I'm going to give away all of my old clothes, hair products, etc. that aren't vegan. I don't want to do it though, until I know there's a place where I can get vegan products without having to look at every single label (plus, I don't know all the non-vegan ingredients in things other that food yet either). Has anyone had any luck with an online vegan store? I've seen sooo many of them online, but I don't want to spend a lot of money on products from one of those stores unless I feel a little more confident about the place first.

I am having a not-vegan weekend, but that is because I am home with my family til the 4th. I am doing well with my vegan shopping though, which is my first goal. I bought Vegan Gourmet Mozz cheese and sliced it for a sandwich. It is ok. Not horrible, but could really be better. It is better to put it on a sandwich than to eat it straight-up. For some reason WF hasn't had the vegan single slices in a while, I don't know why. They were actually good, the Galaxy something brand.
Oh, I think I mentioned these rice noodle bowls i get, and my favorite flavor, the ginger one, wasn't vegan? Well, I bought a bunch of the vegan flavors of them. They were on sale for 99c. Very cool.
I am doing well staying away from cheese though. I didn't do too well resisting a piece of cake at my cousin's grad party though. But I only ate salad there, no pasta with cheese! And today I had a tofu and kale stir-fry my mom prepped for me, and i cooked myself :)

A fudge sundae does sound good. Yum. But I can't eat sugar because of my senstive teeth and I won't eat dairy for ethical reasons.

How dare you!!! I love Vegan Gourmet Mozzarella and here you are saying it's only ok? Not horrible? Could be better?
How dare you!!! I'm putting Vegan Gourmet on my shopping list right now even though it is quite expensive. And you say that Western Family makes vegan cheese slices. I'll have to look for that. Or does WF stand for something else?

It just made my throat feel slightly strange. I will give it another try though, I have it in a container. I got the one that comes as a block in plastic and you have to slice it yourself. WF is Whole Foods. They carried the Galaxy something brand of vegan cheese slices. veggie slices too, and lately they have only have those ones and not the vegan ones, which were good. They carry the Galaxy vegan cheese in blocks though. I will try that next.

Galaxy. Ok. I'll have to look for that.
The Vegan Gourmet I get also comes in a block (a very small one) and the only thing I don't like is that it's kinda slimy. But I love the taste.

I think it is Galaxy Nutritional something, I don't remember exactly.
yea, it was a little slimy. There was just something strange about it to me, I can't place what- either the taste or the texture. And I wasn't expecting it to be like regular mozz either, I was curious.

You're sure right about that!
I can't imagine how you do it, working at McD's. I struggle just to get through the supermarket - things that never appealed to me before are starting to look tempting. (Granted, I was hungry, but still...) If I worked around burgers, I'm sure I'd probably be scarfing one down at least once a day!

Ugh... yea... I did used to have a sore spot for double cheeseburgers a looong time ago, but it really helps to see how that stuff's prepared.... ew. It does smell good sometimes, I won't lie about that, but most of the time these days I'm just waiting to get home so I can try out a new recipe! I am hoping to quit for a job at Moe's though; that would be much better ... although I need to get the application turned in first ... :)
I did have a fortunate run-in with a milkshake that was sitting out today! Someone made an extra milkshake and didn't need it, so they sat it on one of the counters and forgot about it... well, I got a good look at it only about an hour later --- it was one of the nastiest things I've ever seen! It was a dried up foam-like concoction with bubbles all over in it... when I went to throw it away, the whole foamy mixture plopped out of the cup in one piece .... that might just be the image I need to hold onto whenever icecream starts to sound good... :spew:

I've been a lacto-ovo veggie for around 8 years and recently joined VB. I've decided to go vegan!! :nana: My biggest weakness is cheese - I have horrible cravings. I gave in and had a piece of cheese pizza on Sunday :whack: Plain old milk I can do without - I've never enjoyed drinking milk but I do eat it with cereal. I plan on buying some soy milk this weekend when I buy groceries. Luckily my LO husband has agreed to go vegan with me! :hamster:
I can use all the support/encouragment and meal ideas you guys are willing to dish out.

Yay! Congratulations!! :hi:
I understand the cheese thing definitely ... oh, man do I! I tried to get rid of it slowly, but I'm realizing that the best thing to do is to just get rid of it all - out of sight, out of mind kind of a thing... which is rough because I use cheese when I cook for the bf, but he's at least the one buying it now. That's wonderful your husband has decided to go vegan with you! That'll make it so much easier!
Good luck!!

You're going to hate my saying this, but I am not really liking my Vegan Gourmet cheese very much. I had it on a wrap today for lunch with two different flavors of tofurkey cold cuts. I don't know what it is, but it is just weird in my mouth. I don't know what I can do to make it a little better. :-/ I have the wholeblock in my fridge, and I have to use it somehow.

Lol. Sorry.
My favourite way to use Gourmet Vegan: I use it to make a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich.
It seems though that maybe you are slightly intolerant to it. Do you find in general that you are an intolerant person? :)

Oh I love grilled cheese and tomato. I should try that with it. Do you buy the mozzarella flavor?
Not really, only intolerant to meat and people who say they 'need it' and use the Bible to defend themselves.. lol :)
I don't think the texture bothers me, but there is something about the taste, that it doesn't specifically taste bad, but I can't have more than a small amount of it. I don't know why I don't like it.

That's what I thought, lol.
Yeah, mozzarella flavour.
I find there are some foods that I just can't eat. Like when I was 100% raw I would make all kinds of raw pates and I could never eat any of them. Or guacamole. Yet I can eat avocadoes. I don't know why that is. Guess you'll just have to eat Galaxy brand.
I'm going vegan too! Cherbear i've had a few slip-ups too Cheese is the ENEMY! i'm the same way w/ milk too i never liked it unless it was w/ cookies and cereal, but i got an awesome deal on rice milk and stocked up on it. But i'm more resolved then ever, lets do the damn thing! BTW i have found hummus and tahini (sesame paste found really cheap at any arabic store) are the best cheese sub ever and a mayo sub too....i put them on everything they don't taste like cheese or mayo but really make up for it somehow. Thanks for starting this thread moechalatte what a brilliant idea!
