View Full Version : Over-mature onions?

I rented a community garden plot this year, in addition to my yard. The previous planter evidently had grown red onions but didn't harvest them all. When I was preparing the ground I noticed the onions, dug them up, and transplanted them to their own area.

They're starting to bloom. I wonder if they're still edible? I googled the terms (+"red onion" +blooming +edible) and got about 500 hits, but I couldn;t find the answer to this question. Normally I don't eat something if I'm not sure what it is, but I can't think of anything that grows in my area which looks and smells like onion. I could make a bug-repellent spray out of them, I suppose.

Or perhaps you could wait and use the seeds that the flowers will produce. I wouldn't eat them though, they'll probably be bitter if they went to seed already.

You can eat onions at any stage unless they're rotting. :)

if you're worried about preservation you could dry them or make some stock, or eat a lot of onion soup for a while!
