My ex is going to be kicked out of his apt. if he doesn't get rid of the smell there. His super told him so this morning.
He called me (upset) & said he has to get rid of the guinea pig (Jamie) who's been with him for a couple of years, as no matter how much he cleans, the super & neighbours bitch about odours.
Now I am in a position where I feel I have to save the guinea pig-BUT I already have 3 guineas, 3 chinchillas and a cat in my tiny apt.
I am scared of getting kicked out if my landlord finds out, but so far so good.
I am torn about Jamie the guinea pig: I want to save her, but I feel the only thing I can do is donate her to my neighbourhood pet shop, which does placements of the occasional rescue.
What can I do?
My ex is unlikely to clean the apt. properly because he is abusing drugs & alcohol daily.
Also there is racial tension between him & the black super & a black neighbour who complains about him.
Sounds like the odour problem might be an excuse to get him out of there. Maybe he should just move and save himself the trouble.
If he's doing drugs and drinking every day is he capable of looking after Jamie properly anyway? Maybe it would be best if you found her a new home. Are you sure you have to take her to the pet shop? What about advertising in a newspaper or online for a new home for her? Could you take her in the meantime?

Zero Odor (http://www.zeroodor.com/).
Have you used this product? I saw a commercial for it, but I was reluctant to pay that much money without knowing if it would work.

Yes, I've used it for cat box odors... that's about all I use it for.
I've heard it's not very good for stains, only for removing odors, but for that it does a good job. For stains I've started using Anti-Icky-Poo.
Aww, guinea-pigs are precious animals. I hope Jamie does okay with her situation. Sounds like you have your hands full! Good luck? :-/

Please don't take her to a pet store!! She could end up in a much worse situation. If finding her a new home is the only option, best to do it yourself, like gas4 suggested. You can screen potential adopters and try to make sure she's going to a decent home, you will probably do a much better job of this than the pet shop would. Most pet stores know next to nothing about pigs and I doubt they are very careful about who they adopt out the rescues to. (We're talking about a pet store that sells animals, right?) You could post on pet/GP forums like Guinealynx and others, newspaper, etc. Or if that doesn't work, are there any animal rescues in your area?
Also, (as I'm sure you know with 3 of your own! :)) pigs and their cages shouldn't smell if they're kept clean. Certainly not so much that the neighbours would notice! If he can't clean his apartment properly, how good a job is he doing on the cage? And if his apartment is going to smell anyway due to not being clean, will getting rid of the pig make any difference as to whether he gets kicked out?
Hope you can find some sort of solution.
using baking soda in the cage helps. It helped keep my rats'(when I had 12 of them) cages from stinking so soon after cleaning the cage. I sprinkled the baking soda on the bottom of the cage, then a layer of fluff/wood chippings/whatever then more baking soda.

Where do you live? I have a female guinea pig and I have more than enough room for another one so she could have a friend of the same species around the house if you need someone who can take care of her.
