Isowish---there is a Quaker school in York that will be needing a librarian in a few months and my husband is going to apply for that job so we might end up in York! Why will it be another year--are you having a gap year? This is a new and interesting concept for me as gap years are not the norn on Louisiana. What will you be doing in the meantime?

on another note: we went to see the opening night of the previews (meaning we got £10 tickets) for All About My Mother at the Old Vic based on the Pedro almodovar film and starring the wonderful Diana Rigg last night and I recommend it highly. We went early and brought a card to her that we had sent backstage just saying that we were looking forward to it and how we had enjoyed her in Suddenly Last Summer a few years ago and how her accent is spot on ---and we should know as we're from Louisiana and how funny that in this play she'd be playing Blanche Dubois from Streetcar Named Desire and was she working her way through the entire Tennessee Williams set of tragic heroines. Well we went to the stage door after the show and met her and our friend got her autograph. As soon as she heard our accents she said "It was YOU who sent me the card! i laughed so much at what you said and I've put it on my dressing room mirror!" How cool is that?????

I love british theatre!!!!!!!

Isowish--this year at the Old Vic the panto Cinderella has been written by Stephen Fry (don't know if he'll be in it or not)--a few years ago theyhad Ian McKelen as the Widow Twanky. Might be worth looking into. Google old vic and cinderella and look at the cover design--it looks like it will be a hoot.

wow, it would be so cool if you ended up in York too :) :) Won't you miss being so close to London and being able to go there all the time though? Yeah, I'm having a gap year. It's probably not as wild and adventurous as some of the travelling gap years that seem to be the norm. I'm staying close to home, getting some relevant work experience by working for an IT consultancy firm.

haha, a version of Cinderella written by wor Steve sounds like it would be hilarious! :D

This is what the blurb about the play says:

Cinderella is a tale of passion, jealousy, cross-dressing, injustice, chocolate, madness, cruelty, ice-cream, hatred, revenge, jelly, unrequited love, envy, tarts, forgiveness, music, laughter, hope, redemption and most importantly of all, love – the truest, purest love that ever was. And cake. So much cake you won’t believe. It does sound like a laugh!

As for missing london.....yeah we would enormously.......but we tend not to branch out and go to other parts of England because we are comfortable in London. Moving to York would help us to go to other places on trips (like 7 Stories in Newcastle) or take that longboat holiday we've talked about but never done. We have done fantastic course at a Field Study Centre and if we weren't always spending our money going into London we would be able to do that bat identification course or a longer spider course of something cool. But I would have major play withdrawl--but I'm sure once a term we could sneak in a play and come to london!

To anyone else who might go see All About My Mother--Diana Rigg was divine but real kudos also go to Mark Gattis (from the League of Gentlemen) who played a transexual prostitute. He was great.

I had no idea that there was a play version of the AAMM film. I <3 Almodovar.

Have you heard anything about the other position that Spiderman was interested in?

Wanted to post this in case anyone was interested. We're signed up with LoveFilm for DVD rental, and they're offering free tickets to a movie premiere (tonight apparently). There's nothing near us, but maybe someone else could pick up a free flick. :)

Has anybody been to Manna restuarant in Primrose hill recently? I used to go a lot, but found it was really going downhill (not so much the food, although that was suffering... but the service got really awful).

And is Terre terra in Brighton still fantasic?

I've tried Manna a couple of times in the last year and have been underwhelmed each time. Not worth the money or wait. Haven't been to terra terra in a few years so can't comment but the happy cow reviews are still good.

My fav fancy veg restaurant in London is currently 222VeggieVegan. Really imaginative fare, IMHO.

Hm. I've only been to Manna once, but it was absolutely fabulous. :lick: 222Veg was great the first couple of times we went, but the last time (around Christmas), it was just sufficient. :) IT was horribly busy though, so perhaps that trip wasn't the best reflection of the cuisine. (it's a lot cheaper than Manna too, which is cool)

We were just in Brighton over the weekend, but didn't do Terre a Terre. Everyone seems to like Food for Friends, but the wait is appparently pretty long. We checked out Infinity Cafe, which was good, but not great, and THe George which had good pub fare. Next time, we'll have to do the fancy schmancy routine.

That was hysterical. It is nice to see stars who can take the piss out of themselves and don't take themselves so seriously. BTW, Daniel Radcliffe was awesome in Equus as well.

Diana Rigg was so kind and gracious after the play. We tried to wait around after Equus to see Daniel and Richard Griffiths but there were too many groupies outside the stage door screaming "Harry Potter!" sad, really.

Well, I don't know much about it since I'm not from there, but my friend told me that anywhere near Brixton is a bad idea because it's known as a bad area. Though, if the room is great and that you've seen the area it's in by yourself, maybe you'll turn out to like it! It doesn't mean that each part nearish Brixton are bad. I think you have to see by yourself...

Brixton is fine. Its actually safer than Camden. I stay in Camberwell (near Herne Hill) during the week and have never had a problem there. In fact people are very pleasant and there are lots of shops and pubs and stuff. There's a great health food shop in Brixton and shopping at the carribean food markets is great fun if you are adventerous in your cooking.

The best part about Herne Hill/Loughborough Junction is you can take the overland train into the City. It takes a lot less time and the overland trains are a lot more pleasant than the tube, if you ask me. I get from my flat to London Blackfriars in 7 minutes!

People have a negative impression of Brixton due to riots that happened there 20 years ago. 20 years is a long time ago but people still have that idea stuck in their heads. Don't listen to them. You'll love Herne Hill.

Well, I know there are other forums for UK vegans (I even visit one, gasp :shy: ), but I'd like to see the one here offered more opportunity to expand. Being able to make multiple threads would be a big advantage. I think it's just that until a year or two ago, there were never enough UK folks to warrant our own sub-forum. But now, we're taking over. Mwahahahaha.

OK just a random question... which supermarket is best for veg*n food?

Fona
08-29-07, 05:35 PM
oooooh, good question.
not sainsburys. I would say Asda or Tesco becasue they do their own stuff as well as quorn and wor Linda.
Asda wins because they do the vegan chocolate cereal bars and a really nice noodle thing.

*chuckle* I think it depends on where you live. Sainsbury's around here rocks, especially this new one. (we just got dinner there this weekend)

Waitrose is our local favorite though, our supplement to the HFS. :) They have tons of vegan-labelled stuff. (It's also closer than Sainsbury).

I found that Sainsbury's in Pinner was amazingly good, compared to the average supermarket in Brisbane.

Warning - Some Yanks get quite upset at being called Yanks, as I discovered when I visited a Yank friend in California last year. :D
