Anyone else here get their A-Level/GCSE results?

Not yet. The GCSE results come out on Wednesday but my school won't let us have them until Thursday. :grr:

I'm starting to get really nervous. :worried: I saw one of my friends today and we've both been having dreams about Thursday!

I remember my GCSEs, so long ago. Its really annoying when you tell your teachers what you got and they're like "yeah, I know I saw them before you"
whereas at A level they congratulate/comiserate (sp?) you before you've even opened them

Whoop how did everyone else like the festival?
I thought it was too crowded X( couldnt even look at anything.
and the food i bought (some carribean wrap thingy) was nasty. kinda like a bland chickpea salad =\ so i bought a curry instead now that was good!
not enough free food! YAY i got to eat rice ice cream again though (and now my throat hates me cause im allergic to strawberries but thats the best flavour)

prolly wouldnt go again next year, maybe the year after that though cause i wont live close to the bristol one hehe

Just got back. I found it better than most years actually. It's always busy but i think it's getting busier, maybe they need a bigger place to hold it. Though i got there at 11 and it was really quiet.

The food was pretty good and some of the talks were quite interesting and overall the atmosphere was it's usual happy self. Bumped into iamjen and indian summer whichwas nice, good to see them again, shame i couldnt spend longer with them.

Anyway overall a good day and next year i really must goto the bristol vegan fayre so i can do a proper comparison.

I agree that it was wayyy too crowded. We were there by 11:35 and it was already becoming a mad house. I'm so sorry I didn't think to ask you and your guypal to meet after the sessions, vheogl. I was really distracted, but I said to IS later, that we should've gone to Whole Foods or something together!

(we tried to go to WF actually, but they closed about 7.5 minutes before we got there, much to IS's amusement :brood: )

forgot about wholefoods til i was at the tube station and a woman next to me had a bag damnit. left at 4ish though so it mustve been closed

Nah. They're open 'til 6 apparently. We looked for your pink hair, btw. Thought it might be a bit weird though, if you were with your folks. "Um, yeah, Mom, Dad...this is Indian Summer and IamJen."

I got there at about 10.30 and only stayed for about half an hour, and it was not crowded at all then! I wanted to make sure I got the stuff on my shopping list.

IamJen - I'm a postgrad so I have a 15,000 word dissertation due in three weeks!

hi again mates!!! i sent an email to the b&b in hemel and asked for more details but no reply yet. i am thinking i could rent a flat in london for a month or so then decide where i want to live next. can you tell me if i need anything but cash for a short let , i don't see why i'd need a job or good credit since i'll just be there for a few weeks anyway ?

so can you recommend the nicest areas in the city? i'd like somewhere very safe, very green with parks and trees plus many vegan places around. i found a few that i'm considering but i'm not sure about how good the location actually is:

Hm. I'd bet that they will do a credit check, and require a deposit. If you haven't been in the UK long and/or don't have a UK bank account, they may even require a larger deposit.

If you're lucky though, you might be able to find some private landlord who's more flexible.

I haven't looked too much at the London page lately, but www.gumtree.com has tons of ads for short term places usually. Are you interested in London only?

it doesn't have to be london, are there any other uk places really good for vegans? that is also safe and clean with cute parks and green grass? :o

the gumtree site won't load for me :(

Hm. That's funny about the site..it works okay here.

I think there are several nice places. Bristol seemed pretty cool when we were there...definitely vegan friendly. I've not yet been to Brighton (hopefully soon), but it has a good rep. as well.

We're near Oxford, and don't really have any trouble as vegans, but we do wish there was a bit more green space. :(

Short term flats are extremely expensive, aimed towards the corporate folks.

All flats will require a lease and/or rental agreement. Finding a lease that is less than a year is hard, to find one less than 6 months is almost impossible, at least for the first year of residency.

You need to be aware of certain laws in the UK that make it difficult for landlords to throw tenants out once they move in. This makes landlords inspect potential tenants very, very closely. If the tenant doesn't have a job, they may think the tenant is involved in crime or an underground economy or may be wanting to be a squatter or something like that which would put the landlord off.

If I was you, I would register for some classes in a college because that way you could tell people you were a college student which would be more palatable to many landlords.

Also, there are too many areas of the UK to list which is 'good' or 'bad'. You need to think about why you want to come to the UK and what you want from the experience.

I don't know if Erica or *Star*Lass* or any lurking Geordies still read this, but this is the dealio with A&R:

the HFS will stay open.
there will still be cakes and pasties!!!!!!!!!!!!
there will be no seating or coffee shop stuff or whatever. I think they are selling the kitchens.

Ugh...why do I watch the news.

I've had it on for about 15 minutes, and heard the following:

Lead story: investigation into the shooting (by a kid on a BMX bike) of an 11 year old at a park in Liverpool.

"breaking news": 3 kids (ages 13-15) arrested in connection with a stabbing yesterday evening in Oxford. One of the kids (13 year old girl) tried to run away from the cops, another attacked them and is now charged with assaulting a police officer as well (age 15).

update on the M5, which is mostly shut down because shots were fired at a police car sometime this morning.

announcement by Carlisle police that 5 people were arrested in a stabbing of a 50-something year old man there.

From America: a soldier is being sent home because both of his brothers were killed in Iraq, and he's the last surviving son.

throw in stories about how bad British hospitals are doing treating stroke patients, sewage overflowing in flooded areas...argh.

stupid BBC :brood:

And the BBC, 'stupid?' The people who gave us Little Britain and The Office? Wash your mouth out!

Whenever I read this I think back to watching the local news in the US and recall that these stories would be so small compared to the day to day shootings and knifings they wouldn't even make the news.

Has anybody been to Manna restuarant in Primrose hill recently? I used to go a lot, but found it was really going downhill (not so much the food, although that was suffering... but the service got really awful).

And is Terre terra in Brighton still fantasic?
