Does anyone else find it hard to understand why the recent bridge collapse in the USA (last death count that I heard was under 10), is getting masses of newstime, yet the floods in India, Bangladesh and Nepal (last death count I heard of around 150 and likely to rise a lot, with 200 MILLION people left homeless) seems to be of less importance in the time given and lead stories?
This morning I heard nothing on the news about the floods, yet the same news as yesterday repeated again regarding the bridge collapse.
Don't get me wrong, the USA news is awful, but just nothing like the tragedy in South Asia.

Probably because we are best buddies with America at the moment.
I agree, the American incident is horrible, but the news does seem biased towards anything that happens in the USA.

Anyone know any good restaurants in Stoke-on-Trent? We're taking visiting family to the Wedgewood factory and would like a place with some vegan options. Ta.

hi again, i started this thread last year http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=62071 and i am close to leaving for the uk( probably next month). i don't want to fly so i think trains are my best choice because i get to see a lot of european countries too. i found this route here http://www.seat61.com/Romania.htm, does anyone know if there's a better one?
i need to find somewhere to stay for the first 2 months or so before being able to withdraw money from poker in the uk. i can't withdraw too much money right now from my online poker accounts because it would be a nightmare to try to explain to people here where the money comes from, they would think i am making it up, like saying it's from the matrix - the internet is a very strange concept for public/bank workers here. but i'll be able to do it in the UK once i have an address and a bank account there. so i won't have that much money the first 6-8 weeks maybe, depending how soon i can get a bank account ( i'll probably have about 2500 pounds left, if my calculations for the costs of the trip are correct).
what's the best bank for me as a foreigner? how much will i need for living costs for a month? where is it best to stay on a lower budget? i saw some internet sites where vegans are looking for other vegan roomies, would it be hard to find one being from another country( i'm a guy, by the way, 27 yo)? i also saw the bed&breakfast vegan places but they seem a lot more expensive.... should i stick to london for the first few months or live somewhere else? basically i would like to have a room of my own with internet and my own bathroom if possible in a decent area and i don't want to have to make huge deposits or pay 6 months advance, just stay for 1-2 months till i can use my poker money and find a nicer place. any advice please? cheers, mates :nigel:

A cheap flat in zone 2/3 in London with a private bath will cost you about £120 per week and the landlord with want two months rent up front before you can move in. They will also need to see proof of employment: no job, no lease.
Flatshares are a better bet but then again, it will be very hard to find a situation where people will let you move in unless you have a job or can prove income.
£2500 is not a lot of money in London. The cheapest way you can live there legally with out a job is in hostels. Here's the cheapest http://www.generatorhostels.com/london/
If you don't have an address, a job, and a steady income it can be very difficult to find a bank willing to take you on board.

Just wanted to add to MrF's excellent advice - London and the south east is by far the most expensive part of the UK. If you are on a tight budget, think about going further north or to Wales or Scotland.

thanks for the help.:hamster:
i found this http://www.theviolinbnb.co.uk/ and i was thinking i should rent it for 2 months and ask the owners if they can help me get a bank account. from what i understand for some accounts you just need confirmation you live somewhere and i'd have to get a letter from them. do you think that will work? i'll bring enough money for rent and food for 2 months plus i'll have my romanian cards which i can use because i'll keep withdrawing to them even if i'm in the UK (mabe a few hundred for each per month to avoid any complications).

i don't have to live in london, i'd love to go to other parts but the B&B houses seemed just as expensive in other areas. i'm a vegan nazi so i'd need a vegan housing and food which is hard to find. i also found this in the north http://www.fox.hall.btinternet.co.uk/bandb_web_page.htm and as you can see prices are higher to the one that's close to london (no breakfast included, dinner is more and you don't get a discount for longer stays). plus it's in the middle of nowhere, in case i need anything vegan...

You could also have a look here: http://www.themannahouse.com/index.asp
If you can't prove income or provide a guarantor I guess you might be able to pay up front. Banks normally need something official like a utility bill or council tax bill as proof of permanent address, but something like a tenancy agreement might work.

i had a look at that site a few days ago but i noticed there's a ''minimum 6-month tenancy agreement'' and i only want to stay 2 months or maybe even less. i just found these sites:
http://www.1stcontact.com/live/index.php
http://www.quickstartuk.com/
i think i'll try to use them , they seem legit... someone from an immigration forum told me about them:
Ok, as a Romanian citizen you have no visa residence issues, you simply move here, I know cause I am a bulgarian and know that for a fact. Open your account at Barclays, they open accounts to EU citizens with just showing a passport or ID card. If you cant, use quickstartuk.co.uk, they will chararge you 20 pounds and will open the account for you. Another alternative is www.1stcontact.co.uk they will charge you 35. You don't have to declare that you that you are self sufficient.

Actually 3 month contracts are available at Manna but I guess that's still too long for you. You don't need to use those companies for the bank account if you have a passport and an ID card or foreign bank statement - check out the ID requirements on the Barclays website, so you should be fine.
