wow... you ate it neat? i've only ever seen it in small quantities in horseradish sauce. you get marks for effort, anyway!
I dig horseradish. I've eaten in salads, on burgers, etc. for years. But we must have some sort of wussy-ass horseradishes in the States. When we first moved, I slathered a veggieburger in some Colman's mustard...minutes later I was praying for the sweet release of death. :p How could this be, here in the land where salsa comes in "mild" "cool" and "there are no peppers here" flavors?
btw..has anyone been to the mega Whole Foods yet? I've been curious about it, but not enough to venture there. I thought I saw that veohgl had been there maybe?

Ok, here's a question for the natives: Horse-radish! Did you name it horse-radish because it's so stinging & burning hot that only a horse can eat it and live? How can horse-radish be considered suitable for human consumption anyway? You'd think perhaps it would be more suitable as a sort of organic rat poison, if you ask me!
This is a warning to all other immigrants: Stay away from this vegetable - it's the work of the devil, I tell you. And DO NOT under any circumstances consume mustard containing it either. DANGER!
You don't like wasabi either?
Horseradish sauce is excellent on sunday vegan roast. I also put a bit in dumplings to float on hungarian stew.

I've given up on Fresh and Wild since Whole Foods bought them out. Everything there is way over-priced especially when you can get the same stuff (or better) at indendent health food shops. Greed global behemoth chains are a turn off even if they do sell faux hot dogs.

F&W is prohibitively expensive :( I do treat myself sometimes though.
And I LOVE horseradish...mmmmmm
But, if you like the taste, but find it too strong, mix it with a tiny bit of veg*n mayo.
bah... why can I only find sodding screw-fitting lightbulbs?????
Grr

Yep i went a few weeks ago, pretty amazing to me but then again i've never seen a wholefoods so i don't have anything to compare it to. Prices didn't seem that bad for central London. Selection of food was a bit weird they had pretty much every kind of vegan chocolate spread avalible in the U.K but some things like vegan ice cream they had little varity of, the same for toiletries. The whole place is actually really well designed and it feels more like the food hall in harrods that a store selling wholefoods. I enjoyed it and i'd say it's worth going to have a wander round if you're in the area but i'm not sure i'd go out of my way to go there.

It's part of the American chain Wholefoods. It's in Kensington High street just turn right out of the tube station and walk a little way, you can't miss it, it's huge. Also oddly enough it's no more than 5 minutes walk from where the London vegan festival is held every year.
There was no rice ice cream that i could find, they only had a few flavors of swedish glace and toffutti, but i would assume they'll be increasing what they stock over time. As far as i know or as i was told last year the rice ice cream is only sold in some stores around Bristol.

So is this the only one in the country?
I think we're going down to london at some point and staying in a hostel nr kensington high st. If the vegans come it will be nice to have some easy food, odds are I'll buy more than them lol.
Darn. I'm not planning on going near London anytime soon, so it sounds like I'll be missing out on all the fun. :/

Its the only wholefoods in the country yes, but wholefoods bought the chain Fresh and Wild a few years ago and now all of those stores are basically mini Wholefoods branches (really mini in comparison).
It is good for vegan food though it sells a lot of non vegan items as well, fish and meat included. Though for eating while away it has a huge buffet selection which looks tasty, but is hugely expensive and also has some choices of vegan cake including whole vegan chocolate cakes!

Looks like I'll have to give myself an allowance if I go in then :)

Are there any really good (not H&B!!) healthfood shops in York. And/or world food suppliers?
Looking forward to trying out your suggestions for eateries Mr Falafal... I'm going for the posh one. At least once! :hungry:

Wow. Alligator Wholefoods looks great.
And I hope Honeysuckle does us all a favour and records thoughts on the veg restaurants in York on http://www.happycow.net/europe/england/northeast_and_yorkshire/york/index.html
Its been awhile since I've been there and I'd like to know how things have changed for the better or worse. Thanks!
