I don't care how little my student-living-away-from-home food budget is next year, I'm buying Swedish Glace, even if it leaves me eating only rice for a term!

With my job and my student loan+grant, I've got about £600 a month coming in. But with the likes of rent, books, petrol and alcohol sapping my money, it works out at between £10-£20 a week on food. That's easily managable. :)

What uni are you off to, Fona?

Fona

Manchester hopefully, Edinburgh as insurance. you?
I don't have a car i can take so at least thats one less expense I have to think about, well pubic transport probably evens it out.

I'm heading into my second year at Heriot Watt up here in Edinburgh.

I did consider a number of universities down south, but the cost was a major factor against me going for one. I wouldn't have been able to scrounge the money to pay for the tuition fees. :(

Edinburgh Uni is a pretty fine place to study from what I've seen (I've had many a fun time at their student union :P) but obviously it'll vary from department to department. Each university has it's own strengths and weaknesses.

Either way, best wishes with your results and I hope that you end up going to the uni you want. :)

I went to uni in hull, and here's a little tip on saving cash, don't buy all the recommended books you need right away, most lecturers tend to favour one book. I hardly bought any books, saved a bunch of money and still came out with a 2:1. spend the money on more inprtant things like drink and costumes to go to the union in!!

Thanks for the tip. :)

My books totalled into the hundreds of pounds last year, and I'm not even a medical student. I've heard horror stories about them taking out mortgages to afford their books. That may have been a little exaggeration on someone's part.

Oh god yeah, honestly, my first year i was all studious and stuff, bought all the books, and found i didn't use most of them. Also when you're done with them, sell them on ebay, amazon or to a local second hand book store to recoup some of your money.

Another tip is to go the library and take out the books you need, read or photocopy the setions they want you to know, this saved me some money too..or lend the book from a friend who was stupid enough to spend the cash on it!! Thans what friends are for after all.

Just a reminder:
Our town hosts the largest free world music concert in the Uk and it is this weekend--the 14th and 15th of July. They'll be live music, cool crafts and food. It has been amazing the last 2 years. You should come!!

The York places sound nice, I've never been, just a brief visit to the uni. Kate's going though, I'm sure she'll find that useful. There's an Out of This World in York as well...it's supposed to be better than ours, especially for vegans, although ours is still quite fine.

I've just been in Keswick and I went back to the Lakeland Pedlar, first time as a vegan. It's all veggie and quite good vegan choice although it's more pricey than it used to be. I had a nice veggie and bean hotpot with a big side salad and a pitta and falafels (pitta and falafels on request instead of cheese and onion bread) and that was £7.30 - my mum was paying though...still got some of the vegan fruit cake I got as well to take home, it's yummy. They have a bike shop too... http://www.lakelandpedlar.co.uk/

We got a vegan meal to share at Mayson's as well which we always used to go to, it's a nice restaurant (not posh, just right, it has lovely decor, many plants!) and shop...they're not a veggie place and not great for vegan but we got an Indonesian curry which was nice and not too spicy. They have stuffed aubergines with ratatouille too but they're already sprinkled with parmesan. If we go again we might order one and tell them to make it vegan, because they might as well! They say 'often vegan' on their website but that's an exaggeration... http://www.btinternet.com/~maysonsrestaurant/index.html

Booths supermarket seems to do quite a good range of vegan things now...although they couldn't tell us what was in a nut roast on the deli...

We got burritos and chocolate cake from the little bakery bit too.

Ok, here's a question for the natives: Horse-radish! Did you name it horse-radish because it's so stinging & burning hot that only a horse can eat it and live? How can horse-radish be considered suitable for human consumption anyway? You'd think perhaps it would be more suitable as a sort of organic rat poison, if you ask me!

This is a warning to all other immigrants: Stay away from this vegetable - it's the work of the devil, I tell you. And DO NOT under any circumstances consume mustard containing it either. DANGER!
