I would normally have concerns about meeting strangers from forums but this board seems different... I would really like to meet other like-minded people and veg*nism is something really important to me, I find I have more in common with people that respect animals in this way, they are more likely to look at the world differently if you know what I mean! :)

Of course I would consider a meet-up at some point - hey maybe I'll see you in Out of this World if I tell you what I look like or vice-versa...
I look like this (http://flickr.com/photos/96259177@N00/99189200/) and this (http://gallery.greatestjournal.com/albums/up6/76/277076/DSCF1685.jpg) (I'm the really short one). Fell free to yell "Kate!" or "Katwin!" at me. Hell, I'll probably turn around if you shout Isowish. :D

I'm glad you like/know Almonds and Raisins, I was ging to suggest that as a good meeting place if we do decide to meet up. Vegan chocolate cake...

Spidergrrl, I haven't been to Seven Stories but everyone I know who has been has realy loved it (well...one person. Whatever :D)

Ooh we have vegan choc. cake in OOTW too! *shameless plug*
But you can't sit in and eat it unfortunately...well I guess you could but we might have to drag you out after a while in as friendly a manner as possible....hang on come to think of it you could sit on the kids rides that are opposite (I think a tractor and something else)...OK I'll stop talking now.

Can't see the photos at the mo as I'm in school and flickr is blocked but I'll have a look another time!

I don't have photos of me on the computer but I have glasses and messy wavy brown hair, tied back at work, poss.with hairband as well, will be wearing skirt over trousers (underneath my green apron)...

While I'm in this thread is anyone from Sheffield? That's where I'm hoping to go for uni, and I know about the Blue Moon Café (it was actually advertised in the little guide I had from the uni which is nice) but are there any other good veg*n places there? Or any alternative stuff in general...it seems like a nice place if you have any suggestions...I'd like to get a job somewhere a bit different (not a fetish place or anything thank you)!

ETA: Just realised I can see the second photo!

Wow...Isowish....you are a BABE in that second pic. Me-ow.

We plan to go to Newcastle to Seven Stories and one of your museums has some Pre-raphaelite paintings so we'd do that too. Spiderman is working on a masters degree in Children's literature from Roehampton University (and I am enjoying all the reading and discussion without having to write any of the papers!)

I've applied to Sheffield too :) I haven't got an offer yet and it's, like, 5th choice out of the places I've replied so I probably wont be going, but still...

Just let me know (or Kate of course) if you want any more tips about Newcastle! I think it's the Laing that has the paintings you're talking about...

And IamJen of course you can come too if you don't mind coming to Newcastle (don't know where you're from)...getting excited about the chocolate cake and kiddie rides?

http://thetrainline.com is usually reasonable.sometimes you have to be willing to spend a little longer travelling or use some random obscure route (big detour!) and book early but woo cheapness. i think most companies run through them anyway? or other way round. i think the main thing is to book in advance

http://megatrain.com is good if youre only looking for value! they have like 1 train a day going, and mostly only to big stations down south. soooo not much good i dont think.

i spend too much of my life on trains haha

I'd definitely come to Newcastle. It's a new city, new things to see, places to go, people to meet! I might even convince the man to come too (I have my ways...)

Seven Stories calls itself the Centre for Children's Book. As we are really interested in children's lit htis place sounds awesome.

I wish we could come up and join the meet but we just moved house and are strapped for cash. Maybe by the summer.

Hi, I'm from Sheffield! I went to the University of Sheffield, graduated a couple of years ago and I'm still here (but then I only come from just over the border in North Derbyshire anyway). There aren't many entirely veg*n restaurants, there's one called Kumquat Mae which I haven't been to yet but have heard good things about, and the Interval bar/cafe in the students' union has a fair number of vegan options (labelled as vegan) on the menu. There are other restaurants that aren't specifically veg*n but have a good number of choices (Indian/Chinese/Thai/Middle Eastern type places) and there's quite a few wholefoods shops dotted around the place. Devonshire/Division Street (quite near the uni) is a good place for non-mainstream shops. There's lots of club nights and live music of various types going on, depends what you're into but you'll probably find something you like.

What are you hoping to study? I did modern languages. If you've got any specific questions, let me know and I'll see if I can help!

Hello! I'm an American student who'll be living in London next semester. Myself and a friend (both of us vegan) are looking for a flat from between February to May. I was wondering if anyone can offer any advice as to good neighborhoods/areas/places to live for vegetarians and vegans. Are there (hopefully affordable) neighborhoods you know of that have especially good veg markets nearby? I know that ethnic markets are often a great source of veg stuff, and I would definitely like to include Indian/South Asian/East Asian/whatever markets in my query. Thanks so much for your help.

I'm hoping to study Biology there, with a year abroad, hopefully to Australia - I want to get into ecology but the biology course has a good range of options, and not so much human biology...

I have an informal interview on the 8th Feb, but I think it's in a group which I'm a bit apprehensive about - it can be harder to talk in front of your peers than just to an interviewer! Did you have the same?

I found a nice alternative record shop near the uni, don't know the street name or the shop name but it had a pink and orange sign...kinky something? No that doesn't sound right...

So have you been much to the Blue Moon? What's it like? I went in breifly and just had a pineapple juice, but I liked the place and the alternative noticeboards...
Thanks for the tips!

Hi! I'm a student in London right now. It's a bit difficult to give advice - do you know which university you're going to, or what area it's in? I would say that in nearly all areas of London, except the very poshest, there are small 'ethnic' shops, but the cheapest of them are in the cheapest areas of London. East London is probably the best area, in parts such as Hackney and Dalston. Having said that, the poshest areas of London tend to have organic and wholefoods produce and so they can be good for vegans too. It depends on your budget and of course, the more expensive areas also tend to be safer.

There are Indian shops everywhere, but East Asian ones are rarer and seem to be mainly in China Town in my experience. I prefer the Middle Eastern stores, for olives, vine leaves, turkish delight, humous, baba ganoush... I live near Edgware Road in West London which is famous for being a middle Eastern area.

However, I would say that it doesn't really matter what area you choose, being vegan in London is easy.

Hi! Does anyone know if there's a store that sells Cheezly near Heathrow Airport? I have a three hour layover and was hoping to run out and buy as much as would fit in my backpack. I live in the US and can't buy it at home :(

IamJen
01-27-07, 07:41 AM
Hm. First, I'm not sure how well Cheezly will travel. Secondly, it's REALLY unlikely that you could clear immigration, customs, leave the airport, find the store, buy the stuff, get back to the airport, check in, and board the plane in 3 hours. :(

However, I was reading somewhere (Vegan Forum maybe?) that they are starting to sell Cheezly in the US. I'll see if I can find the info.

There's not much out by Heathrow but if you have time you can dash out to Hammersmith on the Piccadilly line and pick some up at the Holland and Barrett at Unit 3 Kings Mall Kings Street, just a stones throw from the Hammersmith Tube station. Here's a map with an arrow pointing near the store:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=hammersmith&ie=UTF8&z=16&ll=51.491444,-0.221164&spn=0.006279,0.026758&om=1

You're looking at a 30 minute tube journey each way so timing would be a bit tight. If you can get through customs in less than 30 minutes or less (which is not impossible) and ran for the tube and didn't dally at Hammersmith and the tube was working correctly you could certainly do it....

Oh and I've bought Cheezly and forgot to put it in the fridge for 2 or 3 days and it was fine.

Good luck!
