VA, I'll be there for a number of months at least. I'm flying in on August 28th. I'll be trying to land a job, so if I manage that (and I have a couple prospects that are looking promising) it'll be on a more permanent basis. A few years. It's a bit up in the air at the moment, but it largely depends on how well living with the BF works!

Halifax (about 300 000 people) is where I live now and it's the biggest city I've lived in since I was quite young. The area I live in is mostly very safe, even at night. I was born in Toronto (4.5 million people... not London size, but fairly big and certainly not always safe) but left when I was 6, so that doesn't really count for big city experience.

Geez, Schoska, you're gonna get me freaked out! The worst thing we tend to have here is the occasional mugging. Thanks for the info though, I certainly appreciate it. It's always good to have a better idea what I'm getting into.

LOL I'm, sorry - I didn't mean to. It really isn't a dangerous city (no where near the top of the list, not even within the UK). I think I've just been unlucky, it happens.
Realistically it is very safe - for example, the night bus system is excellent. No waiting around for dodgy taxis, or having to walk home late.
Please don't let it put you off :) It truly is a great city and it IS safe in comparison with many other places. :pibo:

Oh, I'm going! No worries. I've been to the UK before, but mostly Scotland and the north of England. Never been to London, but I'm sure there's no way I couldn't like a place with so much to see and do. There's practically nothing here for live shows (I think we had Hilary Duff come a few months ago :spew:), so I'll be happy to see more good bands.

Also I hear Avenue Q--that adult sesame street musical--will be showing around my birthday. I'm hoping to go see it :D

I wouldn't worry, I'm 17 (been going to London alone since I was 14/15), roughly a grand height of 5'4, and I haven't been attacked, or successfully mugged (there was an amusing instance a few weeks ago where a man threatened me and a friend for our money, and she replied "It's 6pm, we're laden with shopping bags, and clearly on our way home. Do you honestly think we have any money?" which bewildered him so much we just walked off). I generally feel pretty safe in London, especially in the areas where I go shopping or to see bands, so I wouldn't worry.

Originally I'm from Pontefract, which is very close. There's a good veggie cafe in Doncaster.

Have a look at this website (http://www.happycow.net/europe/england/northeast_and_yorkshire/doncaster/index.html). I've been to Eating Whole - it was really good, cheap, delicious and big portions.

Has anyone seen Wicken Fen burgers anywhere recently? I think they're yummy but haven't been able to track any down (though I occasionally see the sausages). I emailed them but they were, frankly, no help and said they weren't available in my area (I basically said anywhere in London or anywhere in Essex) and I could order them by mail order. I don't want to do that though as a) I'd have to have them delivered to work and get them home and b) their p+p charge is pretty high - about £6 - I'd have to order loads to make it worth while.

Anyone seen any in London, Essex or even Kent? They were the best veggie burgers I have tried.

I've been after them too :( If I spot them I promise I'll share!

Guys, Gordon Ramsey is making me sick tonight... chopping, cooking, and eating pigs ears and trotters :spew:

I avoided watching the show on purpose hehe.
I wish he'd turn his hand to some good veggie stuff sometimes - I'm quite sure that once he shut up and cooked he'd create some great stuff.

He's weird though, he seems intent on including meat in most of his dishes. If anyone mentions that they're a vegetarian he looks at them in disbelief, like they're a complete freak! And i don't like how he's trying to get his kids to see those piglets purely as food, and not get too attached to them.

I'm sure he could create some great veggie food Schoska, but he has no interest in it whatsoever. I wouldn't trust him to do that anyways :-/

Yea I know what you mean. He's an arrogant little sod too.
It is a shame though - I mean...if he can make a brilliant vegetable side dish or a wonderful desert, and enjoying doing both, I really can't understand why he's so against doing a decent main course.
But then I think there is a serious lack of veggie cooking on TV full stop, and especially veggie food that doesn't really on being a) a stir fry, or b) smothered in cheese.
I mean, I love BOTH... but dear god, there is surely more in these chef's repetoire!

I really went off Gordon Ramsey after I saw on one of the episode of "Hells Kitchen" that he'd brought his children turkeys to raise then eat. Fair enough, but he seemed proud that they'd named them and looked after them, then the children didn't fuss when they killed and ate them. Seemed to think it was "educational" to be discompassionate to animals :notvegan:

Mmmm i've just tried one of Alpro's raspberry and vanilla yoghurts. I know i said i could totally taste the soya in the strawberry and peach ones, but in this flavour i really couldn't at all! It's so nice with muesli thrown in. I think i might re-try those strawberry and peach ones.. maybe my tastebuds have changed?

Star lass, you could try the big pots of berry yoghurt that Alpro do too. They are gorgeous. I have some every day for breakfast, with muesli, blueberries and raspberries.

Or the big tubs of plain yoghurt. I love it with either cinamon and sliced apple, or date surup and sliced banana or just on it's own with berries and loads of fruit. yummm.

I've found with Alpro that the more of it I have, the less soya I can taste, and it begins to taste more like the stuff it's replacing, since I'm getting used to it.

Is that the forest fruit yoghurt? I've tried the forest fruit dessert, which was nice, but i don't think i've seen the yoghurt. I'll have to look out for that!

vhoegl, those combinations sound sooo delish! :lick:, but i'm also not sure if i've seen the plain yoghurt around anywhere.

Are you getting them from any supermarket in particular, or from an HFS?

The plain is available in Morrisons.

I've also seen the plain in Holland and Barrett too, but it tends to be more expensive there.

I have posted this in another section of VB but someone suggested I put it here too.

Hi,

Kelly here, I’ve been veggie for about two and a half years thanks to me lovely fiancé. I’m working on a project and would appreciate you all filling in a questionnaire by clicking on the link below and filling in a short form. This is for vegetarians, vegans and also for people that would like to become vegetarian/vegan.

Just for the cautious, this link is NOT spam/virus or any other nasty, I'm working on a website with my man (luckily he’s a web designer know-it-all!), which we hope will help people be able to find veggie products, veggie-friendly stores, restaurants, etc. We're also hoping to cover vegan products and retailers as well. Right now we're trying to work out if the idea is possible, and how best to start, which is hopefully where you people can help!

Thanks for spending time reading this and thanks in advance to people that are going to fill in the questionnaire.

The link is:

Thanks again,

Kelly
