so i typed this in the food discussion thread and got told to come here, but i'm too lazy to type this again:

Since turning Vegan me and my mother have been experimenting so to speak, in the kitchen. And having lived my entire life with curry and rice (Mauritian Family will do that to you , this is what I've been eating since I've been Vegan.

However recently, after scouring my 3 local supermarkets for vegan friendly food (that isn't specifically designed for vegans - it makes me feel like a bit of an outsider.) I came across somethign which made my year =D. In tesco, there are specific aisles allocated to different types of cooking, italian, indian, oriental and the such and having failed to find anything that didn't make me feel like I was the one and only vegan in the world, I decided it was worth a shot. So I looked about the indian and oriental sections (italian isn't really my thing..too much tomato) and imagine my complete and utter shock to find that most of the foods in the oriental section were actually vegan friendly, without being labelled 'vegan friendly'! So I loaded up on whatever there was out of both aisles, but have subsequently eaten it all =(.

So, to get to my point (rather longwindedly I admit), could any of you tell me of supermarkets specifically for the chinese and indian communities, in the Essex/London region? I am aware of china town in London and there's also a sort of warehouse completely filled with chinese foods in Dagenham, but I just wondered if there were any more that you could fill me in on. Google has failed me you see.

So this is an awful long thread, and I apologise, I'm a bit of a chatterbox y'see.

I would be glad for any help at all

Hi Fatnastic. There is a Chinese Superstore in Purley Way Croydon called Wing Yip. I often pop in there for a look, go see for yourself xx

MY MOVING HOME PERSONAL ADVERT::: (please consider this an URGENT but fair minded request!!!! I am a fairly reasonable dude, and just need some friendly assistance/ hands on or not, MOVING is what MATTERS and some contacts/friends in certain areas down south/ coastish areas if poss!!!)

QUESTION IS THEN (Open to help "All ~or~ In Part", no worries!):::

OF course I have a PC to take with me....and I neeeeeeds somewhere it can be used regardless of what will be my non-fixed abode period.....soooo then
..... can anybody help in supporting my phone/internet/PC capability or offer a place to hook up interent when I go to transport my belongings to a lockup in and around Poole & Bournemouth?? OR OTHER SIMILAR AREAS??? If you live in other towns, thats okay, as far as stretching between Plymouth and Brighton would be cool consideration!!!! I will consider moving to any area inbetween, but Poole & Bournemouth is mid-coast which at first proposition I generally consider this ideal as far as location for base when heading out in either direction naturally, BUT then again like I say I will consider finding & renting home some place almost any place down south  (hell, why not right?... just let me know where all the veg*ns are!) soooo first of all I need to find which vegans are where, who willing to help is located etc, who can help with phoneline usage, Or basicly with place to hook up internet/PC at least, (at a nominal fee by you of course :)) which will help me make phone/internet search & research enquires, much cheaper than if were using a pay phone (which is extortionate) and then I'd have much more success about where I can get myself digs of some sort WITH YOUR PROVISORY(?) HELP OF SOME SORT!!!.

So I simply request a friendly vegan or likeminded person, to offer access USING MY OWN PC AS WOULD BE BEST, for internet access/pc switch on,
OR JUST PHONE USAGE BASICLY, (& to reiterate, this I can contribute to a good share of the charges= INTERNET OR PHONE, but at reasonable rate please, I am not rich of course, but as I say will pay at a nominal fee to cover your household phone bill (OR MY RESPECTIVE BILL IF USING MY OWN ISP) if you will help out my cause of finding a friend or just a good willed person helping me avoid having to buy myself a mobile phone, which I have no experiece of using. :(

And besides which even if I had a mobile phone, I would still need to access my offline PC (at least) as that has all the notepad information on it I need regarding my home move (which I cannot easily print off just now either), plus my PC holds info which is applicable to the areas in which I need to decide about where to lockup my possessions whilst my new rented accommodation is found by these means of somebody helping out!.... I mean without phone or internet I am pretty much useless in facilitating the urgency of finding somewhere to live, and would very much appreciate (*you don't know how much*) anybody who can offer intermittent use of their phone line (or one of their phone lines if multiple) in whichever area down south you come forth to tell me about, and whereat you live yourself ideally/optionally ! :) Anyway, any offers, pm me or write your answer here in the UK thread!!!!!!!

I am openminded about where you may live & and where in turn I may scout for a place to live, and correspondingly I will find a lockup and preferably strategic base for flat-hunting, based around that, taking into account travel factors (to and from your home or other building) which may or may not be practical but we'll have to see. But I don't necessarily have to be hanging around real near to my lock up where my possessions will be, wherever I end up stashing my gear depending on contacts and general practical wherewithall, etc:) Soooo???? Any Offers at all?

I will certainly also consider OTHER non southern areas to move to as well, of wherever in ENGLAND anybody else in other areas can apportion themselves to my cause, particularly I am considering toward or in around London (if not South which is first choice!....Most notably I am wishing to reside near to NewForest [ie, Poole/Bournemouth/Southampton] but whether things turn out like that, who knows... Just throw some ideas at me regardless of where you live if you think you can help in anyway!)

Furthermore note: :deal: I am not at all necessarily needing to live AND occupy wherever I hookup, I can just use my PC and your phone-line and then ship out at your convenience, leaving the common room when need be or wherever you have your phoneline/internet room/study at, so like whenever the person doing me this favor leaves home or the study or wherever you have the PC, I would leave too, if thats what suited the individual in question. :) This way I am not putting anybody out and no-one is thwarted by misaquaintance or dubious trust in only semi-knowing a person I would hope yeah?....

And such an idea is NOT at all short of using an internet cafe (its BETTER :)) so even that would fall way short of this BETTER idea....Can anyone tell me they see this as practical/ offerable?.. or has anyone any brighter ideas for workable within say an arranged drop-in to home partition maybe or something like that where access it relatively easy?? <<< I mean to allow somebody into your home whilst you are there too, is obviously good sense, (for those that don't know me yet) and in that regard/any regard in fact, arranging drop in would be no problem for the practical nature of what discussed I would think!....I really need some feedback here, so my request can startup and have some affirmative practical gain for hope, from people seriously willing to help my move in some way! :deal: ~k??

ETA: I hope not TRUST to be an issue, but I perfectly understand it maybe until I know a person or VBer in person, Soooo... what **I** can offer most probably is to leave a financial deposit as a friendly gesture, to garner trust
and when I no longer need the favor I would naturally collect the deposit back from you, & maybe with a tip of thanks or new friendships!.... Or by "thanks" valued in some other way to return the "technical related ~favor~ for assisting my relocation aims!" (yet to be offered by anyone, but this is the first I've posted anywhere with this idea, so someone give me a chance/break would ya?!!!)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
ETA: Of course, if anyone knows of any place good for a vegan to live or you yourself are offering a place or know of a friend that has place, this totally welcome too!!!!!!!! Thanks for paying this some attention !! :wayne: *prays* ;)

VA, I can't help you because I'm between houses myself, but you could try Vegcom (http://www.vegcom.org.uk/vc4/vcindex.php) for veg*n-friendly accommodation.

Hey all. I've been doing some reading about groceries/vegan friendliness, etc. in the UK. I'm wondering how y'all feel about Tesco. I'm seeing that they have as much as a 1/3 share in the food market there, and are continually the subject of lawsuits, etc. re: fair competition. Asda (aka Walmart) is on my no-no list, but I'm wondering if Tesco's just as bad.

PS I loved reading one press release where some Asda exec was saying that the UK govt should investigate Tesco because they had too much power. WALMART complains about unfair pricing and market share. Oh man, the irony kept me laughing for a long while.

Yeah, that is diabolical irony FOR THEM, but deseverdly so, and like two hunters, let them hunt each other, you know what I mean! and yeah Tesco is a bitch, and I saw on tv their tactics lately are to appear green by get this, having small wind turbines on top of their stores visible to the public,
talk about LOOK AT US BEING SEEN TO BE DOING THE RIGHT THING TACTICS. They are NOT a green company, they are just financial strategists as you can guess for yourself....
For the them (Tesco OR WallyMart aka ASDA) to be truly green would take nothing less than a miracle but you can bet whether their plans are effectually green or not, I do not know how far reaching they'll be or what standards they'll comply to (probably their own damn standards I would not be surprised, until such a time the government steps in, IF THAT HAPPENS).

I will be trying there surely, but I still need to have option of the fact I may well be no-fixed abode for a while, hence my request on previous page :) :deal:

ps, when I go here to the Hampshire section, there's nothing available in either the WANTED or OFFERED catagories. Is that the same for everyone else or is the fact I cannot see listing with content, to do with not having Java enabled, probably not, before its a thought nontheless. It could simply be no-one has any housing in the area I want. :(

IamJen: I would say that Tesco's is pretty much as bad as Walmart; in addition to the huge market share, it puts a lot of pressure on councils to allow planning permission for huge out-of-town stores, which are killing off town centres all over the country.

Brilliant!

Black Heart...yeah. We're looking around Oxfordshire for housing, and one of the big stories was about how Tesco's trying to bully the Abingdon town council (or whatever the body's called) into letting them expand. The town business owners are not happy.

I think I may have found my first "cause" in the UK. *chuckle*

I was given a small bag from a friend and my dogs love it, I rang last week to order a large 25kg bag, paid by card over the phone. They said it would take 3 to 4 days. On tues I rang they promised to ring back to find out where my order was, never did. Rang again on wed, again told they would ring me back as they couldnt find my order!!. Thurs, I rang them back to be told the order was coming to me frid,(yesterday) morning. Lunch time I rang again as it hadnt arrived, by now my dogs hadnt got any veggie food left. I was told they had found my order, apologised and said it would be here next wednesday!!!. I complained she came back on the phone saying it would it here on monday as its on the van now (plus a free bag as way of an apology).
I rang my friends who told me its a common problem with them. bad organisation. As I cannot rely on them I will return to Happidog food.
I had to go to a local spa shop and get a un veggie dog food till next week!!.
Needless to say I will NOT recommend them. BE WARNED!!!

Hi all.
A quick question for you-anyone been to Malta? If so, what's it like for veggie food? I did a quick search on google but find personal experience alot more helpful. I might be going in June and just wanted to be alittle prepared food wise.
Cheers.

Hello all you UK'ers! I'm also from that brilliant place. Although I'm not too pleased with it today, finished 2 exams and walked out of college to find it raining heavily. Nice.

I have no idea what it's like in Malta! Have fun anyhow.

Bristol Vegan Fayre 2006 Speakers

This year we have four areas for talks and demos, with around 60 individuals presenting a whole spectrum of information covering every conceivable aspect of the vegan lifestyle.

Some are experts, some are amateurs, all of them are passionate, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable about their chosen topic.

For a list of speakers, see here (http://www.veganbristol.makessense.co.uk/news/full_story.html?id=383). :D

When I move out I am leaving the countryside.

Maybe VA could hook up with the animal farm folks. I'm not sure where Burwash is exactly, but it's down in that area. Maybe you could barter some services for a place to stay or computer access, etc.

eh ? whats the idea?....Animal Farm Folks ? Why would I know folks of that nature, and who wants to know?? LOL!!!... IamJen, apparently you're aware I am moving, but I am not too way out in the country nor in the city... Where I currently live is quite scantilly built up (so so) with yes a fair bit of countryside (west midlands, but moving someplace soon).... but whats the idea that sprang to your mind, I'm not at all clear? For one thing I've never heard of Burwash.... Are you playing with an idea directed more at Vez than you are me or both? To do with moving?
