I'm a fan of Scheese. Especially the blue, smoked hickory and cheddar. When I make pizza, I just dot a few thick blobs of scheese about, it doesn't go stringy like cow cheese. But on pizza I usually have bits of avocado with the other stuff, and then add blobs of hoummous before I eat it so it's mega yummy.
There's another vegan cheese that's better at cooking, Vegerella?? Italian flavour I buy sometimes. I doubt it has any resemblence to cow cheese except in appearance, but it melts on toast.
Toffutti cream cheese is lovely but I make my own by straining natural vegan youghurt.

I LOVE the blue cheese by Scheese. It's my favourite vegan cheese and really is fabulous!!

Hi guys,

I have decided to start limiting the amount of dairy I eat within foods. I feel the time is right to try and move forward. I wondered if any of you could suggest good vegan alternatives to the main dairy items. I already drink Alpro Soya milk. Please can you give me also an idea of where I can buy the items from.:help:

Yoghurt, Cheese, Cream, Margerine? etc....

Anything you suggest would be much appreciated. Thanks.

P. S - I posted this here instead of on the main boards as I only wanted UK suggestions.

Hello and welcome, :
Yogurt= alpro all flavours and plain form Holland & Barrett, Tescos,
Cheese= read the page before this
Cream= alpro again! local health food store, tesco
Marge= tesc0, or H& B do some very good ones. also you'd be suprised at major supermarkets. If you get to tesco online then you can browse around and get an idea of what they have.
Sure people will have other suggestions to add. I dont have shares in tesco. honest.

Where do you live?

Hiya Raquelle, welcome to the UK thread and to VB.......:hi:

For soya milk, if there's one near you, try CO-OP (medium size food superstore) who definately stock one called "Soleil" soya milk which comes in plain with no apple juice or one which has, which is not much as an overall ingredient but even so does enough to make a fairly big difference taste-wise compared to the boring taste of plain ordinary soya... Plain is 65p (in red & white 1litre carton)..... And with AppleJuice its 69p (in green & white 1litre carton) a mere 3 pence more for a better taste and is non-GM too! (both are)....

Its probably the cheapest and best for the price you can get, oftentimes available in health food stores, its a well dispersed product anyhoo, so wherever really but those are the main places to buy. Rest assured CO-OP will sell it the cheapest. Health food stores maybe a tad more pricey.

okay, so there's one of your staple fluids to get a hold of at good quality and at usually an economical price !!!!

Does anyone know of any decent vegan cheeses in the uk?
Cheezily supermelting mozerella block is exquisite if you grate it(tastes very creamy in a dairylea-like way)and melted on toast it is out-of-this-world delicious.

Cheezily white mature cheddar style is yummy sliced thin. It's lovely on crackers with branston pickle and equally lovely in a sandwich with thin slices of raw onion(cheese and onion crisps flavour sandwich).

Enjoy!

Yoghurt, Cheese, Cream, Margerine? etc.....

Yoghurt - Alpro.. you can get them at just about any supermarket, i've seen them at Asda and Morrisons.

Cheese - All different kinds, can be found in Health food shops, Holland and Barratt

Cream - Alpro.. HFS, Holland and Barrett

Margarine - Flora is vegan i think, but i get a brand called Pure, comes in 3 different kinds, i get Sunflower... from supermarkets. I get mine from Morrisons or Asda.

Milk - I like Morrisons unsweetened, as it never curdles in hot drinks, and it's fairly cheap

I live in Northamptonshire in a place called Corby.

There is a Co-op where I live and I do tend to go once a month. I think I'll spend a bit more time on Saturday going round to try and find some vegan products. Thanks for the help so far.

You should be able to get most things you really need from there. I don't tend to buy cheese or cream, so i rarely go to the HFS. Co-ops own brand soya milk is quite expensive, and sometimes curdles.. although it does make your tea/coffee whiter than some of the others. Like VA said, you might be able to get Soleil from there. Have fun looking!

Yeah, just have fun! I don't just drink soya milk - at the moment I LOVE oat milk with my museli in the morning. I've tried rice milk too, but that seems to be a little thin. I find both soya and rice quite sweet and a bit icky if I have too much, but that might just be me. If you like sweet stuff then go for it! Tesco have an organic own brand of soya.

I like the alpro yogurts - seems that everyone does!

Cheeses - I can't say I've ever tried a vegan cheese that I really liked except Toffuti cream cheese. I've never tried one that melts, and the slices are a little plasticy (true of all cheese slices I guess, so if you like that then...)

Good luck finding stuff - let us know if you come up with anything fantastic!

Yoghurt - as the poster above said alpro soy yoghurt. It's avalible in most supermarkets and comes in a varity of flavours.

Cheese - IMO theres no really good or should i say cheese tasting vegan cheese. But do try some of the ones that are out there. Redwoods make a few different ones that can be found in most holland and barrat stores or your local wholefoods store. Just watch out for rice cheeses as most contain casein.

Cream - for single cream, alpro. I've seen it in tesco and sainsburys but if not try holland and barrat. For whipping cream or skwirty(sp) cream try soyatoo. My local wholefoods store has actually started stocking it (much to my surprise) But it's the only place i've actually ever seen it. If you're willing to shop online you can get it online from the vegan store (www.veganstore.co.uk)

Margarine- pure spread, sunflower, soya and the organic are all vegan and avalible in most supermarkets. Sainsburys also make there own free from spread. In addition to that theres a few other vegan margarins out there which you'll probably find in varias wholefood stores.

And because imo it's essential in life.

Chocolate - Green and blacks, peppermint, dark, cooking, maya gold, cherry ( and there may be some others) are vegan and marked as such. A lot of dark chocolate is vegan just check the labels. If you however dont like dark chocolate or want something more milk chocolate like, plamil chocolate is great and comes in different flavour,s avalible online or from most holland and barrart stores. Also check out Holland and barrat for other chocolate alternatives and junky foods.

Also i know you said you drink alpro soy milk but you may want to vary your non dairy milk, theres loads of alternatives out there. rice milk (rice dream being imo the best) is great, as are oat, almond and hazelnut milks.

For chocolate that is vegan, ethical(Green and Black's are no longer ethical),organic and tastes identical to Galaxy chocolate(so is milkier and creamier than any other vegan chocolate),look no further than Organica Premium Swiss Chocolate Couverture Bar!These can be oredered in my any health food store that deal with Suma and are aslso available on line.
Go on!You won't regret it.

The only thing i seem to semi remember hearing a while ago was that they're now owned by cadberrys.

ETA

Yep they were brought by cadberrys.

Not sure if thats the reason they're no longer ethical though.

I tried cheezly yesterday. I'm still not utterly convinved by vegan cheese, but it was the best I've tried so far. On toast with vegetarian worchestire sauce it made a decent enough breakfast. It kinda melted.

I bought some cheezly mature cheddar to put in a lasagne I was making. All I can say was  I didn't like it at all. Very fake cheese taste, not nice at all. I threw the rest of the packet away
It's going to be hard to not have dairy cheese again...

Ahhhh...... Morrisons is doin my head in at the moment! It seems they've stopped selling whole wheat pasta, and the cereal i used to get (like a wheat flake/muesli type thing) so i just get Jordans muesli now. Their veg is always crap looking... tomatoes and onions especially. There were no ripe avacadoes today, and last time they had no pita bread or houmous! There's always something! :grr:

Solution to problem - Don't shop in morrisons. :D

morrisons is a pile of w*nk anyway.

I generally shop in sainsburys, because they don't have a tesco in lancaster, and the asda is practically in morecambe. It's pretty much a bummer if you're a student.
