It was fantastic. Thanks for the list of places in London. We also tried that fantastic new restaurant on Wardour Street which is vegan. I posted about that in another thread. They have sugar free desserts which are awesome and it is suitable for raw foodies too. Still losing weight and this week I noticed that my ankles have stopped swelling up in the afternoon. Plus our grocery bill has halved. I am turning my front garden into an organic fruit and veg garden.

Did anyone else hear about the English couple who's application to be foster carer's was refused because they are vegetarian and would not feed any children in their care meat? Apparently their case is now being reviewed. Very bizaare.

Went into a little chef yesterday and expected just to have linda mccartney sausages and jacket pot, but surprise! They had a lovely vegan option of chargrilled peppers and mushrooms on a bed of salad. It was lovely...

Oh, I've had that! We were travelling back from a competition, and I really didn't want to stop at the Little Chef - I thought it would be rubbish, and I've never been to one before - but that salad really surprised me! Good for them, especially for providing something sans cheese - I know proper restaurant restaurants that don't do that!

Hello?
Is anybody going to come along and support us please?
There may not be that many people here who live within easy travelling distance; also, it is a mainly US board. I live in London, so there's no way I can go to Liverpool just for that.
I would suggest posting on vegan village (http://www.veganvillage.co.uk/) if you haven't already. There is also a UK vegan yahoo group.

I live in Liverpool and I always go and support/enjoy the London and Bristol ones, sigh.
I live in Kent... I have made it to London ones in the past, but travel is so expensive now. Half the year I work at weekends. Still, we've had Liverpool people in this thread before so maybe they are lurking :)

I am happy to be able to inform you that with services such as Megabus it is now possible to travel from one end of the country to the other very cheaply and easily.
So...who is coming to support us please?

Does Megabus and other cheapo (but hopefully reliable) services have a website ?
I'll not be coming even so, I from the midlands still think its too far, at least til I see the prices of services, I dislike bus anyway, I prefer train.
I checked on the megabus site and tickets range from £7.50 to £16 for London/Liverpool. For me to get there from Canterbury would mean a taxi to the station (5 miles), a train to London 2 hours - £26+ return, 5 hours coach trip to Liverpool, overnight accomodation and 7+ hours return journey which might have to be on the sunday as the megabus timetable wasn't that flexible. I'd love to be there but I could get to Spain quicker and cheaper than that even assuming I had 3 days to spare.

No, i didn't see that, and i agree... very bizarre. Doesn't it show they're more health conscious and compassionate?? Do they not realise that lots of kids are raised vegetarian, and live normal, healthy lives.
grimble..do you have to have any more info on this story...names, links, etc? (a news search turned up nothing). I'd like to read some more.

Who lives in London or Edinburgh?
It's still a while before I'm applying to Uni, but I'm looking at both of these places as places I might be living (Edinburgh uni or Imperial College). How do they go as far as being veggie friendly or generally good places to live?
Even better, has anyone been to either of these unis? What were they like?

Vegetarians refused foster care
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/4846324.stm
A couple who were told they could not become foster parents because they are vegetarians have persuaded their county council to think again.
Dolly and Paul Saunders from West Sussex were first told they could not be considered because they would not give a child meat to eat at home.
But the county council has now said its guidelines are being revised and the Saunders' application reconsidered.
Mrs Saunders said she did not understand what the fuss was about.
I really didn't understand that it was as big an issue as they were making it
Dolly Saunders
She said: "If we were to have a child living with us and to be cooking veggie food for ourselves and then presenting them with a different plate of food, that's going to make them feel uncomfortable straight away.
"By allowing them to eat meat at school and when they go to friends and if we went out to a restaurant, we don't mind paying for them to have meat.
"I really didn't understand that it was as big an issue as they were making it."
'Inflexible'
The couple, both 43, hoped fostering would provide company for their 10-year-old son Jake.
They filled in a one-page application form and said they did not eat meat, although they would be happy for the child to eat it outside the home.
A spokesman for the council initially said the problem lay not in the couple's vegetarianism but in their refusal to serve meat at home.
A later statement said its guidelines were being revised and the Saunders' application could be reconsidered.
ps while looking for that^ I found this \/ from 2004

Vegan landlord bans meat-eaters
A vegan landlord in Swansea is advertising for home hunters who are non-meat eaters.
Michael Sosner says vegetarians make good tenants, saying they are sociable, healthier and prefer to live in a meat-free environment.
His company owns four properties in Swansea and Neath which are rented to vegans and vegetarians. .....

Not that any one here has shown an interest either way but...the Liverpool Food Fair today was brilliantly successful.
Who was there, any new products launched? Last year we got a run down on the food tasting and and were green with envy :lick:

Can't tell you about Newcastle, but I live in Fife, and Edinburgh isn't too bad. I don't know about the Uni itself as far as catering is concerned, but there are definately places to eat out.

Check this out, perhaps it will help.
They also have a One World Shop there, which is cool, and there are plenty of charity shops if you're into that sort of thing. One of my friends, who has the funkiest clothes in the world, buys a lot of her stuff from there. Plus, the city is beautiful, and I'm quite happy to wonder round it on my own, something I wouldn't do in other places.
Good luck applying - what are you wanting to study?
