Um, now I have to think of something interesting to say. Okay...I was reading a book about English customs/habits one of the things I found interesting was that it's supposedly very rude to "pop in" to someone's house..that you should always always always call first. Do you Brits follow this rule?

Depends on who it is, I prefer people to warn me. So they don't catch me in the middle of something. But sometimes it's nice to be surprised. When I was younger I would regularly just call on my friends, but grown ups don't tend to do that. I wouldn't go to someones house without checking if they were in and not busy. I wouldn't say it was rude though, just common sense.

we two are pretty easy going, so never mind people calling by without phoning first. But only friends and family and my next door neighbour do.
We usually phone people first, because we live miles away so if we wanted to see them we'd check they were at home. But if we were passing, we'd visit as a surprise. I'd have a fit if my boss or someone like that called at my house without phoning first.

Will anyone be watching Animals on Thursday, at 10pm, on 4? It's a drama about animal experimentation and animal rights activists. Looks quite good.

Me too, but I don't call it laziness - it's going to bed at a responsible time so I get my beauty sleep!

I thought it was quite good. Drama mixed with documentary. Gave some interesting facts (there's 85 animal testing labs in the UK ... i didn't know that) and interviews with animal rights activists, lab workers, and a guy from Huntington Life Sciences. It also showed real undercover footage, such as the primate abuse at covance. Glad i watched it.

It was quite good. Quite well balanced, and a bit of drama, spliced with interviews, both from people infavour of animal testing and infavour of animal rights.

Thatsaid, I'm not so hot on animal testing. I acknowledge that it can help with lifesaving drugs, but a good portion of research in the medical sector these days is for crap like viagra and all these other useless drugs. Now, if you have to kill a few rabbits to develop a cure for HIV/AIDS, then I'm OK with hat, but it's a bit annoying how loads of animals are killed just so some old man can get a stiffy.

That said, the portrayals of violence were quite accurate, from what I hear, and saying that, there is no excuse for a lot of the actions by the ALF. I agree with peaceful protesting, but firebombing and threatening is out of order.

I liked the way the philosopher likened it to war. He seems quite right. Two groups of people, who will never be able to reconcile their differences with dialogue, and he stated that it has the hallmarks of a war.

Anyway, I'm glad I spent 2 hours watching it. I'm a bit of a fence-sitter on the vivisection issue, so it's been brain food.

Thatsaid, I'm pretty happy to not get involved in the issue. It's not really my calling. Kind of a shame really, ince there's not reallyany "moderates" in the discussion. It seems to be hardline pro-vivisectors and animal rights activists. There don't appearto be any mediators.

AIDS was mentioned on the program when they were doing the radio interview. The animal rights activist said that animal testing has prevented us from getting anywhere with finding a cure. She also had a good point when she pointed out the number of people that have died after taking drugs that were found to be suitable for primates. I think there are alternative, but probably more expensive, ways of doing it.

I was gonna watch and would just that, if I'd not had other issues on my mind at the time, I forgot tune in anyway, so thanks for the brief on what you thought of it Loki & Starlass, and I agree likely too many rabbits at the mercy of an old 'stiffy' man is no way for civilized men to behave  LOL, is this a quote you got from the program, haha.... Seriously though I wish I saw it, but alas no I never.

On another note I did however see that program again on Penguins in the wild again Sunday night which you wondered about starlass, and so I had a chance to see again what happened to the penguin which got bloodied by a seal which was filmed just lay there weak not doing much,
at the point where camera did a cutaway, so it was as I thought when I first saw the program earlier in the week, so I guess it never survived, though thats just purely my guess of average assumption so I dunno.

Yeah Spud, looking at one weather map on tv, it seems a bit odd how ALL of the England south coastal area and a fair bit inland was heavy frost last night....I guess being by the cold sea is a factor, but for all of the south coast to be frosted in continuous line, is not all too frequent huh?... In slight contrast the weather in the midlands was no less than zero.

weirdly the sea keeps the land warmer in the winter usually, it heats up all summer and radiates a bit of warmth, or so I read somewhere. I'm 20 miles from the sea and really wish I could move back there, sigh.

Its so strange you've mentioned that cos when i was watching it this morning i was wondering how much they got payed. I can imagine the main designer gets a lot though, as well as Claire Sweeney.

I wrote Vampirella stories in the early '70s; my first story was in #5; I wrote the series in #s 17-21. I was interviewed on the internationally syndicated X-Zone radio show on January 3, 2006. I think this is old, but on 60 min we got paid very little, not sure about Claire and the designers. I know that some of the professional decoraters were losing money on it, but did it as it was good fun. Most of the furniture was donated to the show, so in reality the make overs didnt cost as much as they made out.

on UK BBC2 ~TONIGHT !.....9pm UK time!

21:00 Horizon A War on Science Horizon tells the story of how one of science's greatest theories is facing one of its greatest threats. The theory of evolution is under attack from a controversial new idea called intelligent design, an idea that claims to give an alternative explanation for the origin of life on earth. This new movement claims to be scientific but to many it threatens to replace science with God. Now some of its most high profile critics - Sir David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins amongst them - are speaking out in an attempt to halt the movement's rise and keep religion out of science.

I favor non-religious living :p so this will be a curious thing I guess, whatever this "Intelligent Design" verses Dawkins  is on about.....

For the record, I'm with Dawkins for spreading non-religion, lol.....:sunny:
