It's not just the Nigerian thing, I think most scams are 419. But the email thing is the main. I saw people writing those emails in Ghana a few times.

With out reading it and going that you don't seem to have contacted the firm, I'd guess it was a 419.
Actually I did respond to the itial email they sent, and then they sent me another one; they are claiming some one died and left me in his will.
My first thought is yeah right, which is why I was wondering if anyone ever heard of them. I am waiting to see what they say next before I contact them by phone.

I don't know a lot about wills, but I don't think most would have email addresses in them. Older people are more likely to have wills, but don't use email. Younger people dont usually have wills but do use email. Surely you would know if someone close had died.

I am well aware this could be some kind of scam; as to someone dieing; not neccassarly, I don't know most of my family on either my mothers or fathers side and they are not claiming the deceased is a relative; more like someone I supposedly met at some point and he put me in his will for some reason.
Supposedly they have been trying to find me for a couple of yrs. Like I said, my first thought is yeah right, I don't think so, however it does happen from time to time and I have not heard of this scam yet, so I am playing this very cautiously and being the skeptic I am will do a little more investigating. It's not like I plan on giving any info out over the net, I will wait and see what their next response says.
Remebered there were people from the UK on this forum and thought I would see if anyone knew anything about the firm. A quick web search last night told me that the name of the firm is real and the guy that contacted is real; just not sure if the email is sent by the real firm and guy.
Again thanks for your help.

A Lawyer is the same as a Solicitor but a Barrister only does court work. Solicitors employ Barristers when they have to present stuff in court (though some Solicitors are now allowed to do court work).
Hope that helps. What was the "too good to be true" email about - I'm curious, have you inherited some money from a distant relative or something?!
And what is a 419?
Yeah that is the claim; have your heard of a scam like that?

Hi havocjohn
If you look at their website, there is a list of partners http://www.traverssmith.com/who/partners.html
You could email the person who contacted you (or someone in their office) to find out if it's bona fide. good luck!

Thanks but after a little more research I have come to the conclusion it is a scam.

No, I don't know anything about a scam like this, but I am not all that 'up' on these things - just thought that might be it, you do hear of it happening!
What makes you think it is a scam? Did they response alert you? Or did you find that the email did not come from the actual firm?

I did a search of the company the guy that supposedly died worked for and it came up with a couple of sites where that company was used in these internet scams. There was also an email there that was kinda similar to the one I got.

I have a strange question; Has anyone ever heard of these guys?
TRAVERS ROLAND BRAITHWAITE&PARTNERS
BARRISTERS, ADVOCATES SOLICITORS, AND NOTARY PUBLIC;
ACCREDITTED TO COMMONWEALTH AND MINISTRY OF JUSTICE
OFFICE: 10-SNOW HILL,LONDON EC1A, 2A1,ENGLAND 96 DX
LONDON, CITY.
TELEPHONE NUMBER: +44-7040-117596.
or could someone in England call that number ans see if they are for real?
They just sent me a very strange email and it sounds way to good to be true.
TIAI wouldn't trust someone claiming to be a barrister if they can't even spell 'accredited' correctly ;)

*Star*Lass*, I finally got round to going to Almonds and Raisins. Wanted to buy most of the shop, but came back with vegetarian (vegan, even) Worchester sauce (YAY!), scheese, fishless fish cakes and gelatine-free jellies (part of my girlfriend's christmas present). Me and my gf had vegan chocolate cake, too. It was yummy. My gf reported that it was "not as dry as she expected". Some people! Still, I think that was a compliment!

it shud be known "Worcester~Sauce" is not veg*n, [says me VA and other sources will confirm such too if you search it].....although I do realize you seem to be saying isowish, that you obtained a version of it that you only describe as WorcSauce but do not subscribe to (I hope) literally as WorcSauce, right??

Yaaaayyyy! So you've experienced Almonds and Raisins now! :nana: I've tried the scheese and didn't like it. I was going to try some of their rice slices, but they haven't had them in for ages. The fishless fishcakes (how hard is it to say that??! lol) are really nice, it's quite spooky how much they taste like fish. Did you get the Biona fruit jellies?? Cos they are my absolute faves.. i love the yellow ones! I was in there today actually, and bought my mam a whole one of those vegan chocolate cakes for xmas(it was about £10), as she's allergic to eggs. It is really yummy. I love the sosmix rolls too. I know what you mean about buying the whole shop, i spend a ridiculous amount of time in there and could spend a fortune if i let myself!

yes, some kind of vegetarian Worcester Sauce that I found in a health shop. It tastes pretty much like how I remember the real thing, but it's definately vegan.

For one thing, it's too good to be true. For another, others are receiving the same or a similar e-mail allegedly from the same source firm with similar or the same information. (How many people has this person included in his will?) For yet another reason, I haven't the foggiest idea who he is so why would he include me in his will? The e-mail that I got was from the excite.com domain. If this was for real and if the Travers Smith firm is the one mentioned in the e-mail then it should have the traverssmith domain (I checked out their website). I think this is a variation on the scam where they send an invalid cashier's check and ask you to respond by sending a certain percent back or something similar to that.

Can any of y'all UK folks suggest a good web-order site that's UK base? Something where I could order vegan yummy stuff.

Veganstore (.co.uk). They have some yummy vegan treat stuff (as well as shoes etc). They don't always have everything in stock though as a lot of it is imported from the US and their shipments are a bit random.

haha, that wud mean IamJen ordering something back off the UK that came from the US in the first place, :D how ironic.... maybe in that case you can get what you want IamJen already in America? :stinkeye:
