Hey all,
I'm in New York City, but my husband and I want to visit Scotland real bad. Is Scotland veg*n friendly? are there certain cities that are better than others? We've got a friend in Edinburgh who we'd probably stay with. If anyone's got some info on that I'd appreciate it.
New York City says "hi".

off the top of my head i'd say that glasgow would be a good place to visit. I love it there. its not pretty in the same touristy way that edinburgh is, but it has a real energy about it. And some good veg*n places. I will try to find more info for you.

For some reason, I've missed this thread. Till now.

On the northerner - southener thing - yer all southners.. :D

I'm up in cold, damp St Andrews, Scotland - I think that makes me the most northen veg*n here?

In fact, I think I'm the only one north of the lake district...

Stuart, all isolated up here....

Just the place for a golf hating, not a big fan of the royals scientist... oh well...

yeah, the 'menu' doesnt seem very extensive.

Do you go to the 8th Day? Its lovely there, especially now that theyve expanded it. I like to go there for soup. And i could spend ages (and lots of ££) in the shop!

All this talk of Manchester is making me miss it. I lived there for 6 months and just moved back to London from there a couple of months ago. The eight day does indeed rock as a store, though I never got around to eating there.

Has anyone eaten at the Greenhouse?

Ariadne

I've eaten at the Greenhouse! But you knew that...

jwnyc, Loomis and I were in Scotland last month -- in Orkney and Shetland, in fact, but foodwise they were pretty similar to what I remember of small-town Scotland. And it was haaard work eating out. Getting anything vegan was pretty difficult. If you can self-cater it's much easier.
If you're in Edinburgh or Glasgow you'll be fine, and even the smaller cities will have veggie places that are vegan-friendly. Have a good time!

shame on me, ive never eaten at the greenhouse. The menu looks amazing http://www.greenhouserest.freeuk.com/

I think the Greenhouse could actually do with cutting down its menu, though, because you just get the impression they have a huge freezer stuffed with things that they microwave when you order them. That's probably unfair, but large menus make me wonder.
The food was pretty nice but it need sprucing up, it's very 70s-veg.
