Slaughterhouse: The Task of Blood
Documentary about a small, family-run abattoir in Oldham, showing in graphic detail the process of meat production. Animals arrive healthy and whole and are then killed, skinned, eviscerated, butchered and stored in fridges before being transported to retail outlets. The film is also about the men with the sharp knives, the killers and cutters - white, working class men and the immigrants, both Jewish and Muslim, with whom they work
Duration: 60mins
:/ Dare i watch it??
I don't think I'd dare watch it. I know that I don't want to see that sort of thing.

Well, i watched it. How about you Jobey?? Wasn't as hard to watch as i thought it would be. I felt a bit sick though. That bloke with the tattoos was a right w****r, kicking the animals around, and taking the p*ss out of the cleaners. And he wanted kids in the future???!!! I was glad to hear the other workers talking about respect for the animals though.

Just a quick drop by, hope everyone is okay and not effected by the bombings! I am still in Ghana, but feel very awful about whats happening in London.

I live in Harrogate, N.Yorks! Anyone from near by?
hey BH, good to hear from you too. I'm doing okay out here. Trying my best to be veggie, not always easy. But there is plenty of beans, avocados and nuts! I'm hearing back from friends that they are ok. Not everyone yet, but I'm sure they will be,

Hello UK'ers,
Does anyone know of a good club in England (London, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle...) where they book musicians? My husband is trying to get a tour together over there and is having a bit of a hard time finding places to play. He's an Americana Banjo player and has great luck with audiences liking his music. If anyone here knows of a club he could contact, would you let me know? Is there a venue where you frequent that normally books bands or musicians?
Thanks so much.
My condolences to the London Folks for the tragedy of July 7.

American banjo music would only appeal to niche crowd in the UK, but there is an audience for it.
I would suggest contacting the http://www.britishbluegrass.co.uk/
Banjo style music is very niché. However, there are a few pubs where that sort of stuff would go down well. the task is finding them.

My exams went mostly okay, I wouldn't say I'd done brilliantly though, just well enough to get into Uni. My last exam (sociology) went very badly though, probably got an E or a U for it.
I'm mostly relieved like Isowich. I'm a bit late replying- been on holiday in Canada :-)
Never worry about exams. When I did my GCSE English literature, I walke dout of the exam room, crapping my pants and fearing for the worst. I thought "The worst I'll do will be in english lit."
I got two A's. One of those wa sin english literature. Heaven knows how i did it, but I did.
The moral of the story is "Don't worry about your exam results too much"

Hi Ben, i'm Carly, also 23. I live in Newcastle, so not very near i'm afraid! I've been veggie almost 17 months now. Welcome to Veggieboards! :)
there's a cool programme on channel 4 at this moment, about supermarkets and how rubbish they are.
It may be worth a look.

Looks good next week too..... ducks and dairy cows.
I've always believed that supermarkets are evil. But a necessary one in this society. I had a couple of years out before uni, and all my friends who are experienced in uni are giving me advice. "Shop at Asda, it's cheap" they say. "But I have morals" I replied, "Asda is staunchly anti-union, and as you said, is the cheapest supermarket in Britain. It pursues low prices in a way that demeans suppliers."
In the show, and interview wit ha factory farmer showed that he was making four pence profit on each chicken. And they were factory farmed ones.
I absolutely hate supermarkets. When I'm the one buying the food, I'll be using them as little as possible. Even the vegetables are overpriced and sh*te in supermarkets. Everything is intensively farmed, and has no flavour whatsoever. And you can buy anything out of season. I am somewhat of a strawberry connossiour, and the lady in my local fruit & veg shop told me that in february, people were asking for strawberries. "But it's february", I said. "That's what I tried telling them" she replied. Anyway, I tried some strawberries in april. Out of season, and sourced from morocco. They had a rubber texture, and the taste was awful. They were by no means juicy.
Yet supermarket culture has dictated that strawberries will be grown throughout the year, shipped in from all over the world.

Loki, your post is interesting enough to (possibly) start a new thread about it, if one doesn't already exist. The situation is similar here in the U.S.
It seems as though supermarkets are the new thing to criticise. joanna Blythman criticised them in her book Shopped, a while ago. I read it and fell in love with it.
Now Channl 4 has a dispatches series on Supermarkets, and just last week, Richard Hammond did a programme about supermarkets.

I watched the supermarket programme last night too. Can't say it really surprised me but it was kind of shocking too.
