Where can you get tofutti ice cream in the u.k? i've never seen any other tofutti product other than the cream cheese.

They do it in Newcastle in Holland and Barrett, and in my HFS. Think i've seen the Better Pecan one, and a strawberry one. Haven't tried em yet though, and not sure i should now cos of the sugar thing???

Regarding Tofutti ice cream!
Mary from Realfood (who run the 'Realfood' and 'Is It Vegan' websites) says:-
You will be relieved to know that the Tofutti brands available in the UK are fine. Most of their main products (and all of their icecreams) are made in Europe, where they source sugar from beet. The products that they make in America are also (according to the UK director) suitable for vegans, as they have to produce the product for a different market.
He claims that as America is such a litigious society that Tofutti are scared to claim their product as always vegan in case they are sued, but that it always is. I am not so sure of that latter claim, but am happy that their products manufactured in Europe are vegan. These are all the icecreams.

However, if you are unsure of the soft cheeses and sour creams, which are imported from America, my advice would be to avoid them, until ourselves and the vegan society have more clarification from the company.

Interesting! So what exactly is made in the EU besides their ice cream? Is there a list?

No list yet I don't think, she said they will update the website when she has time (they are busy organising The Heart of England Vegan Festival at the moment.)

Hmmm I'd assume that all their fresh products ( ice cream, sour cream, ice cream etc.) would be manufactured in europe. Wouldn't it be extremely hard, not to mention expensive to ship them from the U.S?

Thanks for investigating Tofutti, I was thinking of doing it myself. Their cream cheeses are mentioned on many vegan websites. I certainly hope they're ok.

I checked the 'Better Than Cream Cheese' label at my local H&B and it says 'produce of the USA', which means it was made in the USA and shipped over. It also listed 'sugar' as one of its ingredients. So, there's a good chance it contains sugar filtered through bone char.

However, the tofutti cheese slices also said 'Product of the USA' but doesn't list 'sugar' as any of its ingredients so it's most likely OK.

"HEART OF ENGLAND VEGAN FESTIVAL, CARLING ACADEMY, DALE END, BIRMINGHAM
18/6/05 9.30AM - 5PM Admission is FREE

The arrangements for our next festival are well under way. As you will know by now it is called "The Heart of England Vegan Festival". It is to be held at the Carling Academy at Dale End in Birmingham on June 18th. We would like to thank the Academy management who have been a great help to us so far.

We have been able to improve on the catering facilties we had this year and so far we are able to offer at least 4 different caterers. We will also have other stalls selling a range of cold vegan options and other stalls selling a wide range of vegan cakes. Just the cakes on their own make the festival worth visiting.

The venue is also much bigger than the one we had for the NW Festival and we can put up between 60-80 stalls. Having said which, book early to avoid disappointment, spaces are going fast. We have booked out over 40 stalls so if you want a space you need to book quickly."

Was up late the other night, around 3ish, and thought i'd see what was on tv at that time. GCSE bitesize was on, and i tuned in just in time for a French lesson, involving how to order Fois Gras, and how you get Fois Gras :grr: (at least they didn't hide that part)

Anyone watching Hollyoaks at the moment? There's a storyline right now about a girl who wants to be vegan, and the problems she faces with her family not understanding her etc. Really nice to see.

I'm not watching hollyoaks, but I heard about it. Although the information came from my friends in the form of:
"Kate, are you watching hollyoaks? It's just, like, your life. Well not really, but that girl's trying to be vegan. But she's being really stupid about it and forcing her family to be vegan. I didn't mean you're stupid!"

it appears to be a pretty crap representation. Mixed though. It's beginners stage, so the representation will be the over the top melodrama of settling into a new lifestyle. i watched today's episode, and the vegan story wasn't played out much, (I presume it has been in previous episodes) but the impression is that they're going to develop it a bit, and hopefully, we'll have a strong vegan character on TV in the future. For now though, i'm doubtful.

Anyone else finding them hell?

I did English Lit today. That means 4 of my 11 GCSEs are completely finished. I'm just counting them down, I'm so desperate for them to end.

Isowish, yeh, uni work is really hard. I could rely on memorising for my GCSE's, but there's just too much work to do that at uni, so i really have to understand and remember everything!! I'm studying Zoology. Are you planning on doing A-levels? My exams are over now, but i missed 3 exams from last semester, so i have to do those in August

Hi Lee, i'm from Newcastle! I'm actually going to Scotland next week for one of my uni modules. Do u know Millport? It's on a small island near Glasgow. I would be looking forward to it, but i have to do work, grrrrr.
