im so looking forward to it, i usually go to brighton every other weekend anyway so its the perfect place to go and live. just hope the student accomadtion on campus is ok i dont know if i want to share with meat eaters
Oh, Brighton - you lucky thing!
Can't you make special request like to share with veggies only? A shame if not as I bet there are plenty in the same boat! I think of it as a cultural need!!

Can anyone get hold of Tofutti "better than cream cheese"?? My HFS sells Tofutti cream cheese alternative, but not that one, it comes in plain and garlic and herb, and both are gross IMO. Is there any difference in flavour?
I thought both those tubs had "better than cream cheese" on them? I buy the plain one and love it, but maybe there's some other product I'm missing out on??

I was shocked to see the Smoked Salmon variety has actual smoked salmon in it as I thought all their products were vegan.
And I wish we had all the ice cream flavours here. My favourite used to be Coffee Marshmallow Swirl but I've been told you can't get it in the UK anymore.

Nope, here's the one my HFS has, it's called "creamy smooth":

I asked them why they didn't sell the "better than cream cheese" and she said that you get less for a higher price, so they get that one. yuck!!

The Creamy smooth one. That's the only one I've ever seen.

Tofutti isn't made for vegans, it's made for the Kosher crowd. Thats' something to keep in mind.
Every town in the UK has a Holland and Barret or one nearby. They will order 'better than cream cheese' for you if you ask them.

Really? Why soya ice cream though? It's okay to eat dairy isn't it, just not with certain other foods like meats.
"Kosher
adj Kosher is not synonymous with vegetarian. Anything marked with the kosher symbol (K) was manufactured in accordance with Hebrew dietary laws, which state that dairy products cannot be combined with meat products. Therefore, the kosher symbol indicates that the product contains dairy or meat but not both.
Related terms
Kosher dairy - The kosher dairy (D) symbol indicates a product which either contains dairy or was manufactured on machines that process dairy.
Kosher gelatin - Gelatin from a non-mammal source, such as fish.
Pareve - The pareve symbol (P) indicates that the product does not contain meat or dairy, though it may contain fish or eggs."

Yup. I saw an interview with the dude who created Tofutti products. He simply wanted to have ice cream after dinner but cound't because of kosher laws. So he created a soy based ice cream that he could eat after dinner and still remain kosher. That's what started the ball rolling. It's all about the kosher, not about vegetarian or vegan or anything over at Tofutti.
Ah, I hadn't thought about meat and dairy within the same mealtime - i was thinking in the same dish! Interesting.
I wonder what proportion of their sales come from the vegan market.

Here's a quote from their faq. They use sugar that has been refined with animal bone char!
Please bear in mind that we sell products that appeal to the lactose/dairy intolerant consumer. We would like to satisfy consumers' other health concerns as well, and so we will continue to work to the best of our ability to accomplish that goal. http://www.tofutti.com/
I would assume from this that their main customers are kosher and lactose intolerant folks, not vegans.

Noooooooooooooooooo!
I can't bear it . . . sob . . . I can't believe it . . . I am stunned.
Is the Tofutti we get here made in the UK? I wonder if it is any different here as it is easier to get vegan sugar.

Nope, all tofutti products are made in the good ol' USA and imported over. I prefer Swedish Glace over tofutti ice cream so that's not a problem. Gotta check if the cheese slices and better than cream cheese contains sugar...
You know, sometimes ignorance really is bliss . . .
Where can you get tofutti ice cream in the u.k? i've never seen any other tofutti product other than the cream cheese.

I haven't seen the ice cream either but then again I don't look for it. I've purchased tofutti cheese slices in Holland and Barret and Sour Supreme which is there fake sour cream in a shop in Brighton and yesterday in a natural food store on Grafton St in Dublin.
i just found out that i might not be able to get into student halls when i go to brighton, anyone know of anyone who needs a room mate ????

I've got a friend studying there. I'll ask her if she's got any ideas.
I get Tofutti ice cream in my local independant health food shop. If yours doesn't stock it I'm sure they could order it for you. I'm still reeling from the bone char sugar revelation - how can they say it's vegan with that in it?
Shakeaway milkshake shops also make vegan milkshakes using it along with soya milk. (http://www.shakeaway.com)
What a blow about your accomodation Soph - I'm sure something will turn up> There must be other new students in the same position, or people already studying there who need to move out from the halls next year and might need an extra person to fill a student flat or house share.
thank you that would be a great help i u could ask your friend,
yeh i just went onto the brighton uni web site as even though im studying at the plumpton college we are apart of brighton uni, so e-mailed and asked them about the accomadation fingers crossed i wil hear back
