I loved it, was busier than I expected. They had long benches and everytime someone wanted to get out everyone had to get up to let them out. As it was so busy, this happened a lot! The food was great, absolutely loved it. They kep changing the dished so we got realy full, but we wanted to try the new stuff. Oh and they had loads of chocolate too! :hungry: There are a couple of the pics in the album now of me and Black Heart. She came along to a party afterwards and it was great fun! Shame you couldn't have made it along too!

Sorry I missed it! What was the 'best' or most interesting dish served?

I still haven't made it to the pogo cafe yet. I really must make the effort one day and get there. It just seems like a long way to go just for food :)

I have been and yes it was a bit of a trek just to eat. But I'd definitely go back when they have an event going on, or music - which they often do.
And obviously if I'm in that area I would go. I only wish there was something similar in my area, I'd hang out there often.

Yes, I feel the same Ethel! But both times I've been it has definitely been worth it. I live in the far west of London and it takes me about an hour and a half to get there, but if I'm going into central London anyway, I don't really think it's a problem.

Just a quick question...

When you go out what do you order? I always order vodka & orange, but how do I know if this is veg*n? What are you favourite veg*n safe drinks?

Thanks.

I am going to be in Liverpool from Sunday thru Thursday. Any recommendations?

Egg Cafe is your best bet, Magnet (tofu burger!) on Hardman St and the Greek place just off of Hardman st where you can assemble veggie starters into a 'meze'. Tried a few Chinese places in Chinatown but they were nothing to write home about. Bella Pasta does veggie pasta.

You are a mine of useful info Mr F! What would we do without your tireless and selfless research, tramping the streets of the UK and seeking out worthy places to point the weary vegan traveller to!! Our hero! :juggle:

All in a days work, maam <adjusts cape>

And now I'm off to another town to hunt for veggie food for all!

I'm going to be in London from May 10-16 with BF. He's omni but probably wouldn't be opposed to eating at a veg place at least once while we're there. Any tips?

What kind of thing are you looking for? A big romantic meal in the evening if it might just be one night?
What area will you be in?

We haven't booked our accomodations yet, Ethel, so I don't know. Presumably we'll be close to the most prominent tourist attractions...but wherever we can get the best price is what we'll probably choose.

I'm hoping for a place that is omni-friendly. He's a picky eater, so a place where he could get something fairly "normal" that still had something special enough that it would be a relief from the workarounds you usually have to get at a regular restaurant. (IE: Everyone else is eating big plates of food and the vegan is stuck with naked salad and a plain baked potato. Er, jacket potato? )

ceryna, there are too many options to choose from. You'll need to be more specific about your likes/dislikes.

Indian or middle eastern? Mexican? Italian? Veggie versions of british food? Creative French/mediteranean? Healthy and bland? Spicy and outlandish? Posh surroundings or street food? Chinese? Trendy? Classic? Cheap/expensive? Pure vegan? Veggie friendly? Omni with a few veggie dishes? Turkish?

Seriously, London has so many options a vegan could eat out at a different place every night for months before visiting the same place twice.

My tip for bargain London accomodations near tourist areas is Bloomsbury area, specifically any hotel on Cartwright Gardens. Cheap and cheerful and friendly staff http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/cgi-bin/www.s-h-systems.co.uk/brochurea.pl?id=the-george-hotel2 The area is great with laundry, shops, places to eat and a fantastic healthfood shop with counter meals at lunch around the corner.

Brilliant!

ceryna, www.vegout.info (http://www.vegout.info/index.html) is a briiiiilllllllliiiiiiaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnntttttt! website for finding places to eat, by nearest tube station, postcode, specific location, or similar listing.

I wonder what makes you say brilliant with such brilliance?

Thanks everyone, for the replies. :)

I think the factors that we are considering are:

1) Affordability
2) Accessibility (easy to access from the tube)
3) Variety on the menu

I'm more adventurous with food than BF is. He doesn't like very many vegan things, although he'll usually taste something that I've cooked if it's not too exotic. He doesn't like tofu or very many vegetables. A restaurant with some lacto-ovo as well as vegan options would be ideal, because I am open to trying new things, and he would prefer something fairly "normal", like pasta with cheese or something.

I like Italian, Mexican, and Chinese food. Italian would probably be best because that'll be easiest for BF, but I want more than just spaghetti with marinara. I want some awesome vegan lasagna or something special that I can't get here at home. :)

And this turned out a little more wordy than planned. ^^;; Many thanks for all the help, and I'll be sure to check the link that brilliant provided! :D

ETA: A place where he could get pizza with cheese and I could get pizza with soy cheeze would be great, too. I eat cheeseless veggie pizza pretty often but I'd love to try a "cheeze" pizza.

Forget about finding vegan cheese on a pizza. Doesn't happen in London that I know of. For vegan pizza, go to one of the many Pizza Express restaurants you'll wander by and order a veggie pizza without cheese.

Here are some suggestions, all within Tube zone 1

'Eat and Two Veg' would be good for a evening meal. It's non-hippie and in the trendy Marlybone neighborhood. Classic dishes done vegetarian and vegan style http://www.vegout.info/restaurant2.php?Postcode=W1U%205HN&Name=Eat%20and%20Two%20Veg

Wagamama has restaurants all over. http://www.vegout.info/restaurant2.php?Postcode=WC1A%201JB&Name=Wagamama good noodle bar with meat and veggie options for all. The link is for one close to the Britsh Museum.

When you visit the Tower of London, head up to Liverpool St Station and walk over to Spitalfields Market for lunch. You'll get a taste of 'The City' with it's brokers and suits as well as a flavour for some of the older parts of London. Spitalfields market is a great place for lunch as it has a homespun food court amongst the market stalls filled with trendy clothes and bric-a-brac. The food court has food from around the world and there are loads of veggie things to choose from. Mr Fussy Eater would have lots to choose from while you induldged. http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/spitalfields-market.php

Cafe Pacifico is a the rowdy Mexican restaurant near Covent Garden. Excellent omni food with good veggie options. http://www.cafepacifico-laperla.com/Pages/Pac_Lon.htm

Bog-standard italian places abound all over the tourist areas. Can't really single out one for anything special. Just check out the menus of the many you pass by. One place over by St Pauls cathedral is very friendly and has a few items for veggies but plenty for omnis. http://www.london-eating.co.uk/2166.htm

Gotta try Red Veg in soho. All your favourite fast food items but all completely vegetarian. Even my fussy 5 year old nephew loves it. http://www.vegout.info/restaurant2.php?Postcode=W1D%203TB&Name=Red%20Veg

This may be too adventerous, but you really should look at Rasa on Charlotte St north of Oxford st. Proper Indian food (as opposed to fake Indian created for Western pallates) vegetarian and fish restaurant. http://www.vegout.info/restaurant2.php?Postcode=W1T%201NQ&Name=Rasa%20Samudra

Over in Theatreland on St Martin's Lane is Chi a great 'all you can eat vegetarian chinese food buffet'. Cheap and filling with fake meat items for the fussy. http://www.vegout.info/restaurant2.php?Postcode=WC2N%204EA&Name=Chi

South of the Thames in the general area of the Globe Theatre, Tate, Hayward Galleries is a chain of excellent turkish restaurants called 'Tas'. Very popular right now and with a great menu for ominis and veggies alike. Here's a menu http://www.tasrestaurant.com/menu.asp

And if you leave London without getting a falafel at Maoz (43 Old Compton - just up from Leicester Square) you will be doing yourself a great disservice.

There are many, many more but these are the least expensive, more central places more suitable to your situation.

You've probably all tried these before, but a recommendation for a vegan easter is Thornton's dark chocolate brazil nuts, yum!! and their ginger truffle chocolate bar is nice too, and comes in an egg!

Thorntons are very low quality chocolate. Booja Booja or Green and Blacks eggs are way better, IMHO. But of course the best comes from MrsFalafel's chocolate chop :D
