I went to Borders bookshop today in Riccarton Mall, and they have a great selection of vegetarian cooking books, and also alot of vegan ones also. They aren't that cheap, but overall not too badly priced :)

on a different subject - Is anyone planning to watch stakeout on tv3 tonight? apparently there's a whole thing on the evils of battery farming and on the hormones that go into food (animal stuff especially).
it sounds quite good, and it's done by bomber so, yep, could be interesting...

Hey guys new to NZ (as of 13 feb). Will be abusing the safe food list for groceries.
Are yummy specialty things even available here(TSP, gluten, nut. yeast), or will I have to do without?
Thanks.

Wow, can't believe I found this portion of the website. We are planning a move to NZ in less than two years.
I can't believe how long I've been visiting these forums without knowing that there's a NZ one. I'm so stoked. I keep coming across weird things like the concept of free range farms which are apparently defined by the cows being allowed outside for 1 hr per day. Nobody knows what I'm talking about - cows live in paddocks, duh.
And there're Hamilton people here too, yay!
Who knows good places for vegetarians to eat in Hamilton?
And where can I find a vegetarian stir fry sauce for my veges?
Oh, oh, and everyone ask me questions about how great New Zealand is becasue I love it.

Hey people!
Not been here in ages.
Anyone got any exciting news?
Yeah, I got an email from the Green party - apparently some select committee has concluded that battery cages are in breach of the animal welfare act (which says that animals have to be free to perform normal behaviour), they reckon this is one step closer to battery cages being banned. Of course we all know how often the Govt. actually takes the advice of these select committees.

Hi :D I'm from Christchurch (Burnside High) but just moved to Hamilton and am a first year at Waikato uni.
Wish I'd found this forum before, it looks great - I came across it because I was searching desperately for new shampoo & conditioner. I just found out that Clairol Herbal Essences may be using animal products and switched to A'kin which doesn't seem to be compatible with my hair - any advice?

it's spendy, but I think Biolage brand is vegan... not totally sure, tho- you can get it at salons and whatnot.

I'm doing my Masters in Psychology this year, plus I just started tutoring a paper called Psychology and Women.
Earth sciences, japanese and maths is an interesting combination. Is there something specific you're going to do with them after your degree?

I'm only in first year and I haven't taken any psychology (though I'd have liked to!) so probably haven't seen you.
Erm...not sure yet about what I can do...it's probably not the most useful choice of subjects. I'd like to be a volcanologist, but I guess the Japanese is more for interest.

Do they have volcanoes in Japan? I tried to learn Japanese in High School, that is one hard arse language to learn.
