Back of the Y is a really tacky TV show. They're showing it on MTV2 in England. It's crap, which is what makes it so good. The crapness makes it funny.

Watch your mouth...What can be seen on MTV2 is nothing compared to what they show in New zealand. what the pricks in the UK see is something that is completly censored. Back of the Y is high quality

hmmm do they even make or show that anymore? I can't even remember seeing/hearing anything about it for years.

woodentree - it's definately cool that whittakers dark ones are vegan, I wish they would make a dark nut one though!

Danny - asian stores are good for substitute products, I had not really been making good use of them until recently, a few weeks ago I went and got stuff like a can of mock chicken(seitan) but I still haven't tried most of the things I got. Plus I had been buying tvp from the health shop and it was only 1/3 the price at the asian shop!!! And one ingredient that makes any chinese food taste better is vegetarian oyster sauce, i put it in everything now

Oh I so want a dark nut one!
Think they would make it if we all wrote to them? :)

Hmm, it's worth a try! Maybe we can email them when they get their website up and running.

Fantastic Foods "Snack in a Box" meals
These are all vegan, except the Alfredo and Carbonara flavours, which contain milk derivatives, so they are still all vegetarian. All the 'meat' in these snacks is either gluten or TVP, (texturised vegetable protein). The flavours used are 'nature identical' i.e. artificial.

Pasta range:
Bolognaise; Napoletana; Tomato, Bacon and Mushroom; Roasted Red Pepper

Noodle range:
Pad Thai; Sweet and Sour; Sweet Chilli Chicken; Satay Beef

Rice range:
Thai Peanut Satay, Thai Green Curry; Thai Red Curry"

OMG YAY! I so wanted the sweet chilli one, or the Satay one.. but I just asumed they'd have chicken/beef in.
I KNOW WHAT IM STOCKING UP ON!!! I'm sure I saw Chicken Extract in one of those though.. Hrm.. I'll check out the packages again!

I was just reading that newsletter too. That's so cool, i'd never think of looking at things like that!!

I saw them and thought they'd be good if I wanted to eat "real" food at work :P
So I got the only one which I assumed was Vegetarian.. the Napoletana one.. And it made my mouth go orange :P

I'm sure the Bolognaise does have chicken extract in it!!

So the bacon and mushroom doesn't have real bacon in it?
isn't that like false advertising or something?

DannyKass
05-08-04, 07:29 AM
I don't think so.. Cause it doesn't say "Real bacon" or "Pig meat" or anything.

I got the "Chicken" one for work tomorrow. It just says "Chicken flavour" on it. Not Chicken Extract like I thought.. But I still don't know.. it sounds a bit weird to me..
And before my brother was like "Is that yours? Are you SURE it's Vegetarian? Wouldn't it say on it?" Even though I know he was only saying that because he wanted to eat it he does have a point.. I'm sure it would say Vegetarian on it.

There's also a Honey Soy flavour, which unless it doesn't actually contain Honey isn't Vegan.
Hrmm.. Fantastic foods is a Vegetarian brand!! www.fantasticfoods.com that would be the same brand as the NZ one wouldn't it though? And it's listed on a NZ site too!

http://www.fantasticsnacks.com.au/snack_in_a_box.asp That doesn't say anything about it though.

I'm pretty sure the US fantastic vegetarian foods are a different brand than the NZ/AU one. I've seen a few of the US fantastic ones in an organic shop and they were quite different plus I think the NZ ones also make the 2 minute noodle type things that have meat ingredients in them.

The "chicken flavour" thing does sound pretty dodgy, I always get paranoid about ingredients if they don't say vegetarian, but you would assume that the vegetarian society would double check things like that before saying they are vegan!

DannyKass

I ate it anyway, and it was REALLY YUM! I didn't even see any "chicken" pieces in it!
And it didn't taste like chicken! I emailed and asked the Vegetarian society haha im all like BUT ARE YOU SURE?!?!

Eww the Feelers on C4! Doing "Hi-jack" I can't stand one of those guys.. I think his names Jeremy?
Their newest/ish song is alright though. I used to like them though.

GOODNIGHT NURSE ARE COMING TO MY SCHOOL THIS WEEK!
I don't like them that much, but still that's kinda cool!

Hi Hayley,

My contact had heard this from them directly, but I've asked him to give me
their email address, so you can contact them directly, just in case.

There are quite a lot of companies who don't push their products as
specifically vegetarian - Watties baked beans being a classic example. There
is a chance this could limit their market, and for this kind of product I think
they've got a point. However, they could indicate the ingredients are
artificial.

We'll be in touch with their details.

Regards

Pam Bidwell
President - Wellington's Vegetarian Society

I dont know what she's on about about the baked beans! But oh well :P
And another person emailed me back saying pretty much the same thing!
But YAY for it being such a fast reply!!

Yes, Nz idol was awesome! I voted for Michael too but they are both good so I'm not too fussed. Goodnight Nurse came to my school today, didn't see them though, the hall was packed.

Hey
I've been reading that I should be eating nutritional yeast and flax seeds.
I didn't see them at the supermarket but I did see savory yeast and linseed.
Are these the same things?

what is it like being a vegan in NZ?

AU is hard compared to England or the US... everything i hear about NZ makes me want to move. if the AU government doesn't get tossed soon...

Nauseum - It's ok being a vegan in nz, but I don't have the experience of any other country to compare it to. From what I see on the internet, I get the feeling that it's a less common thing here than in the us or uk. The people that I talk to IRL think it's kind of an extreme thing to do.

Tropikiwi - I've seen brewers yeast in supermarkets and health food shops but I haven't seen any actual nutritional yeast. Some people say it's the same thing but I don't know. I haven't seen any flax seeds, but I've seen flax oil at binn inn though.

I just checked my jar of marmite and it says it's made of 80% yeast, and it has B12 and all that other good stuff. mmm marmite

Savoury yeast is nutritional yeast(brewers yeast is something completely different). Flax actually is linseed, I'm not sure where you can get whole seeds but Healtheries sell ground linseed and it says on the box 'also known as flax seeds' or something like that.

It's not too bad being vegan here but I am so jealous of all the products that people in the US and UK seem to get!!
I'd say it's slightly worse here than in AU, I lived in Brisbane last year and vegan products like vege sausages, soy ice cream etc are so much cheaper there, plus there are more products that they don't have here. It does seem to getting better here though.

I'm so addicted to marmite, I eat so much of it!!

lol pinkpunch, at least you know what you are talking about.. *hides*

I have noticed that supermarkets are getting better at stocking vegan stuff. It's still pretty much impossible to find vegan cheese though, which is a bit of a bummer.

Thanks for the info :)
I have a friend in Australia and she has told me how they have cheaper vege products.
And I saw a website that showed lots of aussie vege stuff and I was so jealous.
The UK and US seem to have heaps!
I have never even seen vegan cheese.
But I do love my marmite :)

I happened to be in Farmers today and discovered that Freeman's products are half price for queen's birthday.
I thought I would let you know because it has previously been post on this site that their products aren't tested on animals and contain no animal ingrediants.
They also smell wonderful :)
