Especially when you read some of the horror stories about animal welfare that happen in the US!

Do they have volcanoes in Japan? I tried to learn Japanese in High School, that is one hard arse language to learn.
Hehe yes :P so maybe I can be a volcanologist working in Japan...
What are you planning to do once you've finished your degree?

Don't know about places in Wellington. But no matter what don't get it done with a gun. Gotta be a needle!!
My time in new zealand is almost up unfortuantly. But thankfully i get to spend my last few days in Christchurch and omj can i just say if theres any VBers living here you are some of the luckiest people alive. This city is just way too vegan friendly. I don't have enough days to try everything in all the great places there are to eat. It's not fair! I'm going to have to come back one day just for the food.

Yes you definatly should, it's a great city. I've had a great time in NZ i'm going to hate leaving. Besides this place being so vegan friendly the whole country has just been beautiful. I've given up describing it, words jsut dont come close to what it's really like. I've also done so much and met so many great people. argh really dont want to leave. But never mind i'm sure i'll be back before long.

Hey guys. I'm currently living in Brazil but my boyfriend is from NZ and I'll be moving with him to Wellington next year. I'm pretty excited about it, and I'd like to know if it's a vegan friendly place? Thanks! :D

I dont actually live in NZ but i have just returned from 8 weeks travelling around it and i'd say it's extreamly vegan friendly. I dont think you could find a more vegan friendly place. They have soy milk everywhere, even in tiny cafes in the middle of nowhere. Theres lots of vegan options in the supermarkets and loads of asian foods everywhere. As for eating out. If i remember rightly Wellington is pretty good, theres a fair few vegetarian cafes/resturants all serving vegan options, theres also a fairly decent wholefoods shop right in the centre of cuba street. I managed fine being vegan my whole time in NZ. I'm back in the U.K now and i actually miss the way it's so vegan friendly. I'd give anything to be able to go into cafes here and find soy milk as an option. ooooh or eat a Leda bar, I miss those things so much, i wish they'd get them here.

Go Christchurch! I'm going to miss it but Hamilton's pretty cool. From what I hear Wellington is also great for vegans and vegetarians so I don't think you should have too many problems Isabelle :)

Guys, I was wondering... My fiancé who lives there hasn't been a vegetarian for long, and all kinds of meat subs still freak him out, so he couldn't tell me when I asked... What are your favorite brands of meat subs there?

Depends where he lives .....Wellington maybe there is an amazing organic shop there , almost supermarket size , its got a pack of stuff could find out the address if thats where he lives
All the supermarkets here are well stocked vegetarian in the chillers where the cottage cheese , hummus is kept area there are veggie sausage , fritters of different flavors and luncheon rolls mainly tofu based You gotta spend a bit of time to look .
In the freezers there are veggie spring rolls ...man are they great....samoas an veggie fritters but different to the ones in the chillers

hi!
I live in Wellington too. I think the place bluesand was talking about is commonsense organics, they have one in central wellington at 260 Wakefield Street, and other shops in different suburbs - see here: http://www.commonsenseorganics.co.nz/shops/
I don't go there that much - I'm a poor student and they're expensive. not completely vegetarian either. they do have some good things though - faux meats, nutritional yeast (called savoury yeast in new zealand). I go there for one-off stuff I can't find anywhere else. New World supermarkets have savoury yeast in the bulk bins, and fake meats, soy yoghurt, hummus, tahini etc in the chiller beside the dairy stuff. Pak N Save have tofu, fake meat, falafel mix, soy yoghurt - cheaper than New World.
Homestead Health is pretty good too (on cuba street, opposite Plum cafe, near the bucket fountain). They have gluten flour for making seitan, some fake meat stuff, soy mayonnaise and soy cheese (Cheezly) sometimes.
I don't really know any fake meat brands to recommend - I'm not much of a faux meat fan. I have taken 'Bean Supreme' sausages to omni bbqs before and they were pretty good. But I totally recommend Hings tofu - it's a staple for me. Pretty good value - around $3 for a block, and it's made in wellington. The extra firm blocks are really good - you don't need to press the water out before you prepare it.
Oh yeah and your guy should check out the produce markets on sundays on upper willis street - not sure of the exact address, it's around 200, in the carpark past the Unicomm Hostels. Heaps of cheap produce, and they have tofu and soymilk there.

Oh, and I wanted to give you guys a heads up. There's going to be a winter potluck dinner from the Vegetarian Society in Wellington on the 16th of June. Everyone's welcome of course, so let me copy and paste the email I got:
WINTER POTLUCK DINNER
Saturday, 16th June. 6.00 to 8.00pm
This is an invitation for you to enjoy some great food and fine company in warm surroundings.
We will be having a winter-time pot luck dinner in the warmth of Crossways Community Hall, on the corner of Elizabeth and Brougham Streets, Mt Vic. (It's just along a bit and around the corner from the famous Embassy Theatre.)
All you need to bring along is a vegan dish (to share), and a friend too if you wish. Feel free to bring a bottle of your favourite wine as well. Tea, coffee, and herbal tea will be available.
This is a great time to meet other vegetarians from all walks of life, learn more about the Society, and try some wonderful food at the same time.
RSVP by email to nicky.owers@ clear.net. nz or you can give Nicky a bell on (04) 563-6610.
