Yeah, it does feel good and sometimes I do feel proud of how far I've come, as a kid I ate so much junk food, never wanted to eat veggies hahahaha I told my Mum I was going vegetarian at about age 13 and she laughed and asked what I would be eating....Anyway I went vego but I did eat chicken and fish until I was about 18 then I ate meat again for a couple of years then back to vego and then started realising I wanted to go all the way. Until then I was pretty ignorant of the ways animals were treated in the meat and dairy industries, then I found out and I made the decision I couldnt be a part of that anymore.
So yeah, I've gone through heaps of changes, it must be about 8 years vegan cause it was in 2000 I became one. I felt soooo much better dropping dairy from my diet, so much cleaner, I didnt really miss red meat as I didnt like it that much anyway, but dairy - cheese, yogurt, milkshakes I loved them all. I had cravings for a while but I couldnt return as I just knew I couldnt contribute to the animals suffering for me having a chocolate milkshake, turns out I have the best choc shakes now and they are WAY better than the dairy ones before. The world opens up you know?:smitten:
I feel more satisfied with food now than I ever have. And I love knowing how veganism really gives to our planet, I love our world - I dont want to see it crumble and be barren and lifeless. I want to live in paradise, veganism is a definite contributor to us turning the state of the world around.
The more I looked into veganism the more I loved it. It takes strength to be one, good for you for starting the journey:sunny:
I feel healthier and healthier.... each year that passes I dont feel worse, I feel better. There are other things I do as well to have this good feeling!! But being vegan is definitely a good step to take. And the other things are understanding myself and feeling my heart, not smoking pot or anything hahahah been there done that.
Thanks for your friendship paulwalkersgirl, its great to meet you.
Love Claire

You were a junk food addict when you were a kid, huh? I've always been a junk food addict... even today, I still am... I just can't have certain stuff, as you know. hehe. The only vegetable that I couldn't stand when I was young was spinach... but I like it now though. :bobo: lol
Ever since I became a vegetarian, I'd expressed interest in going vegan but I felt unsure and worried. But I think now, because I know how to access more vegan foods, I've found it more easier to eat more vegan foods.
Is anyone else in your family vegetarian or vegan? As far as I know, I'm the only one in my family who doesn't eat meat... and just now, dairy, eggs etc too. hehe
I can't believe I ate meat for 21 years... I wish if I learnt more of this lifestyle years ago, but I guess things happen for a reason. I decided once and for all that I didn't want anything to do with the dairy and egg industries the other week when I watched a video on those industries. I cried and my mum was affected too.
I feel really great not having dairy anymore... you say 'cleaner'... I couldn't agree more!!!! I've always loved my cheese, yogurt and milkshakes... But there's nothing wrong with soy yogurt etc... it's beautiful. :smitten:
Has your family been supportive of you being vegan? My mum's been great about it, & my step mum too. My mum worries about me sometimes, especially with calcium etc, but she's learning that I just need to have a good balance with my vegan diet. :D
Soy chocolate milkshake? oohhh nice
I've never loved food so much at the moment. It's fantastic. hehe. Our planet's such a beautiful place. We all need to take better care of it. I just love making a difference to animals' lives and the environment as well... and I feel more healthy and better with myself, at the same time. That's a beautiful bonus.
At the beginning of the year, I got out 'Becoming Vegan' and read through... I agreed with EVERYTHING that was in it. Vegan philosophy is absolutely incredible.
You're very welcome, claire. :sunny: It's great to meet you too. I'm glad that I'm able to talk to other Australians that now what I'm going through. It's nice to know that I'm not alone. :)

thankyou, syb :) this should be fun!! *thumbs up*
Good for you Lisa! A great choice!
Yeah I still like some junk food, its just now I make it or buy it veganised. Also I dont eat sugar as its poison - I use other sweeteners like organic dates or agave syrup.
My friends/flatmates have been really supportive, they are all vegan too which is great. My family are over in NZ, when I went vego though they were supportive, they didnt try to change my mind or anything. They're not vego or vegan - I see how they are the same as the rest of the world who is not vegan, just living not really wanting to know about it. But thats alright, I lived like that too for a lot of my life.:smitten: I love em anyway.
Yeah the videos on the net are great to watch to see really whats going on in the animal industries, I cry too when I watch them. I think if more people see these vids then the reality of where the meat/dairy is coming from will start to sink in, it did for me that's for sure.

Thankyouuu, Claire!!!! :sunny:
Hmm.... maybe I should make my own junk food, that would be fun. haha. I wish I knew what stores have some vegan sweets!
I've heard agave syrup is quite good? :)
My family knows what goes in, I just don't think they're ready to make the transition to at least vegetarian. Mum's wanting to eat organic meat more. I guess it's better than nothing.
I watch the videos every now and then, so I can remember why I went vegetarian in the first place. :)

2 mcg per day. is the aussie RDI.
As a vegan though, 2-3mcg is recommended.

There aren't any vegan sources in foods naturally, but you can get small amounts of fortified Vit D in vegan spreads like Nuttelex.
It's not enough to rely on though, so your best source is sunlight and taking a Vit D supplement which I strongly recommend. I take about 10mcg (400IU) per day.
Other countries have fortified cereals and juices but we don't because of our high sunlight quota.

The high sunlight quota, that makes sense. :)

Hi Australia thread people!
I've been around veggie boards a bit but haven't introduced myself here... I'm a vegetarian from Canberra. My husband and I decided to become vegetarian about a year ago after watching Earthlings. We have 2 boys aged 5 and 3 - one is vegan (but enjoys meat if his nanna gives it to him on the sly) and the other doesn't eat meat, but loves his dairy. We have a lot of work ahead of us but we'll get there!
Going veg has been the best decision of my life and I can't believe it took me so long to wake up to reality!
Looking forward to joining in on the Australian thread! :sunny:
