Thank God the Melbourne Cup is over for another year.
Animal Lib Vic (http://www.alv.org.au/) have a good horse racing flyer and people I've given it to invariably seemed genuinely shocked by the cruelty of the industry. (So we need to let more people know)
You can also get the facts at the ALV 'Horse Racing Kills' (http://www.horseracingkills.org/1.htm) site.
Is it true that horses can recover from a broken leg?
Apparently when one race-goer heard that a horse was euthanised after a race at the Melbourne Cup she cried that it was such a shame because race horses cost so much money. wtf.

I think that almost any animal can recover from a broken leg, given appropriate veterinary care.
Horses are raced before their bones are properly developed, so broken legs are commonplace.
I'll find some more info later.
Centuries of selective breeding have made thoroughbreds increasingly fragile. "They go 45 miles per hour, weigh 1,000 pounds and have ankles as big as yours and mine," says trainer Nick Zito. Agrees New York Daily News racing columnist Bill Finley, "The thoroughbred racehorse is a genetic mistake. It runs too fast, its frame is too large, and its legs are far too small. As long as mankind demands that it run at high speeds under stressful conditions, horses will die at racetracks."

Opinion piece by Keating in the SMH.
Work Choices is nothing more than a bitchy, ideologically based attempt to break down the wages and working conditions of the lowest-paid Australians; in the main, women and young people.
And the reason Howard never mentioned Work Choices in the 2004 election campaign was that he never expected to have control of the Senate after that election to pass such a draconian piece of law.

Well, it looks like we have a new Federal Government, with a strong possibility that John Howard has gone overboard. :D
hi people sydney sider here
Well, it looks like we have a new Federal Government, with a strong possibility that John Howard has gone overboard. :D
It would make me :D to see Howard lose Bennelong. A strong Green presence in the Senate looks like it's shaping up to be a possibility too.
So do we still need to wait for the postal votes to find out if he lost his seat? or do we have more of an idea now? *Hasn't heard any news since 11pm last night*
Update of just over an hour ago is showing that Labor is still not claiming victory in Bennelong, it's still a knife edge, and they are awaiting postal votes.
This is an interesting "election" article.

George Newhouse, a politician, is claiming he was slapped by a journo. The journalist in turn is claiming that she "only pushed him in the face". Since when is "pushing someone in the face" ok?
The headline on the front page of the Los Angeles Times says "US Ally is Ousted". Oh, the angst of the American media! I wonder if poor Georgie boy has finished his hand-wringing yet? :p

Stupid journalists. We'll still be an ally, just not one with it's tongue down the back of GW's pants.
Greg Combet is a good family friend of ours, I hope he get's into Rudd's ministry. I think he'd be good in immigration or something, better than Kevin Andrews/whoever the former minister for it was anyway!
Oh and I lol'd when I heard Abbott is running for leadership of the Libs. The way he is constantly putting his foot in it makes him a bit of a liability! Of course if he did become opposition leader and then won the next election I'd be crying rather than laughing...
