View Full Version : Australia
Please excuse the ignorance and no offence intended, but I have a question. I have been listening to the Aussie advertizements, and it has made me curious to know how many distinct dialects can be found in Oz? I know what Shewolf sounds like. Is that East coast? Is Paul Hogan a put on? What part did Jeff Corwin's speech represent? No offense ment. Just curious.

jeff corwin is from massachusettes  :)
she means the tripper in the safari suit :)
When you say dialects Im guessing you mean accents? Although there's some variation in the accent depending on which state you're in and a person's background and education etc, the differences are fairly subtle. There aren't really marked differences like you would find in the US, like between NJ and TX for example. The one accent that is probably the most noticeably different to the average aussie accent is the one that has developed in the last 15 or so years amongst children of ethnic immigrants (Greek, Lebanese, Italian etc) from Sydney's western suburbs:. Sounds a bit like the guys in this comedy clip:

Yeah..if I can recall correctly, she was from Queensland. She'd sound slightly different to me for example because I'm from Southern Australia where the accent is more influenced by the English immigrants. But like I said, the differences are subtle and hard to pick if you're not an aussie.
Is Paul Hogan a put on?
No he's for real, he's just got more of an old style country kind of accent. He sounds much more real than Steve Irwin who didn't really sound like anyone! :) Irwin's accent was very exaggerated....actually it was probably his delivery which was exagerated more than his accent if that makes any sense. He over-emphasized his words a lot and sounded like a charicature of an aussie.
I am so sorry. Steve Irwin, yes. There is one accent attributed (at least in the US) to the natives of the outback, the aboriginies which is so very thick and quite charming that I was wondering if it was an American fake steriotype. In the ad they have an aborignie, a champion swimmer, a rancher girl, and another. They all have different accents. I supposed it was produced by Australia for the tourist season, but then I wondered which parts of Australia they represented.
do you mean that really awful where the bloody hell are ya!
ad? :)

But everyone sounds different to you because your POSH!! :p
Steve Irwin's accent always sounded a litte exagerated for the cameras. I've heard real life people with accents as thick as his, and thicker, but his always sounded just a little bit like the showmanship was showing through.

Howdy! or should I say gday! I was born in Sydney, I live in Scotland, but I'm back here on holidays for a few months visiting family and having a break from the cold brrrr. Gotta say, the (packaged) veggie food in the UK is much more widely available than here - but the fresh fruit and veg over here kick butt!
Couple of questions for you:
- (sorry not for the vegans) what are some good non-animal rennet cheeses over here?
- for those in sydney - is Govinda's still up and running? I'm kinda stuck in the northern beaches but when I lived in Newtown (many years ago!) I used to go there a lot. Might be worth getting a baby-sitter and taking DH there - there's nothing like that in Scotland!!!
Have a great day everyone!

There are quite a few but one that will be really easy for you to find is the Coles "farmland" supermarket brand. Their Colby cheese has no animal rennet. In the same supermarket you should akso be able to find 'Nimbin Natural' and 'Mainland Vegetarian' cheese.
welcome back to Oz btw :)
But everyone sounds different to you because your POSH!! :p
I should've known encouraging you back to VB was going to be a mistake :p

F me D!! No wonder it was banned. Which cement head thought fighting violence with violence was a good idea.
ETA: d'ya reckon that was a NSW ad?
Dunno...could be ...or Vic.
Weird thing is, he's talking s**t anyway because a lot of guys in prison have committed violence against women and the other inmates don't give a toss, they've probably done it too.
Usually they only bash them if they're a rockspider or they assaulted their sister or something
yeah thasts pretty full on.

I think thats what they call 'quaint' in the hospitality industry :)
when are they going to stop shoving this horribly precocious child victim of the entertainment industry in our faces?
