Oh, and you know Easy Way? It's asian drink place near the escalators on level 3. They have teas, icees, juices, shakes, milk drinks and pudding. They have coconut milk drinks, and almond milk drinks etc, but even the normal 'milk' is non dairy creamer. I wrote to them and they said none of their products contain egg, dairy, or gelatin. They have lots of jelly and pudding type things but its all sourced from tapioca and the like.

Glenda, have you been to other Animal Lib meetings? Were you at the last one (Nov) and/or at the Christmas party (Dec)?

Hey everyone!!!! =)

OH this is such a brilliant messageboard! People are actually posting messages regularly...[Glenda picks herself up off the floor after falling over in shock....]

Iceflower: I work at the DoCS Helpline where child abuse reports are made. I've been there since before it went 24hours over four years ago. Where do you work now ? Angus and Robertson.... Is that the book shop with the best vegan cook books ? I know there is one book shop there that I have bought heaps of great vegan stuff from including one about surviving as a vegetarian around meat eaters.

Kurmudgeon. I've been to a number of Animal Lib meetings, but none recently....I was planning on going to the Christmas party last year but at the last minute couldn't go.... I have not been too active lately in the animal rights movement apart from my diet and want to change that in 2005 so I'm going to try and go to as many meetings and events etc as I can. I did want to start a group in this area at some stage, there's a Newcastle "branch" of Animal Lib, so why not a Western Suburbs one ???? I think there must be people apart from myself who feel very isolated out this way.

The Christmas party was great.... something like 60+ veg*ns/AR activists. I used to be active (as in going to protests, mainly Circus ones) but fell out of it for a couple of years. In the second half of last year I felt I had to get back into it. So I rejoined Animal Lib and started going to demos, and joined PETA's activist network and started helping out there.

I've thought about a Western Suburbs group...... but I haven't felt I have the ability (yet) to start one. I know of some others out this way who might be interested (I met them through PETA); one girl lives near me (Hawkesbury), one or two others are about 30 minutes away, and I think there's someone up in the (blue) mountains.

Apparently some of the KFCs out this way are some of the most popular in Australia, and now and then there's a rodeo (I think local government has banned animal circuses). If you wanna discuss starting up a Western Sydney group, I'd be interested.

I've gone to a few demos with the Newcastle group; they're a great bunch of people, and I'm sure they'll have plenty of advice (as well as the NSW group) they can offer us about starting up a group.

Your welcome :)

We did have (well, they still do!) have quite a few good veggie cookbooks! I bought one there called The Complete Vegetarian Cookbook by Bay Books (it's got a green cover) that's really excellent - it's got a lot of good info at the beginning too.
I did get one once though, the 2nd Edition Complete Idiots Guide to Vegetarianism and it was complete crap. The author was lacto-ovo and very biased, so it wasn't very factual and also protrayed vegans as extremists. So a warning not to waste your money! :)

I think a Western subs Animal Rights or Vegetarian group would be great. I've never really gone to any before because I was a bit too young to go travelling into the city for the dinners and stuff by myself.
...Except I might be getting a job at KFC if I can change my TAFE to part time, so I couldn't really attend those rallies. It's close and the people have been really really nice to me. Don't hate me! *hides*

I did go to a MacFreeZone rally in Katoomba back in '02 though. That had quite a large turnout.

Someone I know in PETA worked at KFC, after becoming a vegan. She went from the store up to a management level, and has used a lot of that experience in her work for PETA.

HEY Don't hide!!!! You have to earn your money somehow so that you can eat and live and continue your studies! And if the people are nice to you, well that's a good start that's for sure and I can fully relate to liking a job that is close to home.

What are you studying at TAFE ?

Diploma of Children's Services..I want to be a teacher :)
I want to do the Diploma part time over 3 years so I can work during the day, but otherwise I'm doing 2 years full time. UWS have changed their education courses now so once it's completed, I can get two years recognition for their 3 year child and family course, then do a 1 yr ba ed Early Childhood and walk away as a teacher with a double degree. Cheaper and more flexible than than 4 straight years at uni :)

Hello, I have been living in NQ for about 2 years now. I am new to Australia. I practise my vegetarianism mostly at home by myself in the midst of my omni family (partner, cats, dogs and chooks). Not much vegn social life here in the bush, not even in the closest Town. Otherwise it's ok. I can cook and I love my home made sourdough full grain rye bread. Though sometimes feel the need of support from like minded souls. And BBQ, it is supposed to be true Ossie but I feel quite left out from that fun. They might heat soy saucages for me right next to their meat. All the salads contain cream and egg mayonaise. The only vegs I have met here don't mind and they even eat fish and chicken sometimes. And everyone here seem to assume that me too don't mind chicken stock in my soup or fish sauce in my salad.

Sorry mates Ossies, don't wanna be negative and critisize your great country and friendly people. It's not this country to blame, of course, but myself. I have given in so much, started eating more junk food and am now sad having gained so much weight during the time here. Now I am searching my way back into healthier life again and got here to get some support to strengthen my spirit.

And to be positive I love the local mangoes here and coming from cold scandinavia I love growing my herbs and tomatoes almost all year round! Lots of other positive things here that make me want to stay here for a long time!

Cheers :D

Greetings all,

I recieved an email from Glenda The Good Witch of the West (Western Sydney?) about this board and figured I'd pay a visit. In the email she said that there were people actually chatting here!! Waoh!! I guess that's how desperate for conversation we'd become with nobody leaving any messages on the old Veganlist board anymore. If it was even running. Although even then, it probably still wouldn't work!

Actually, I think I've visited the veggie boards before, but never realised there was an Australian one here.

Oh, and I'm Glenn. Avene is the name I use for any music I work on or release. Generally a mix of hip hop / electronica / experimental. I've just made the return to cable internet too, so it's good to know there's a board like this I can check every so often if I'm not doing much.

By the way, Glenda, what are those vegetarian Indian restaurants you go to? Do they have many vegan dishes? If so which ones? I've been on the lookout for a decent Indian restaurant with meals that don't contain any dairy. Sure, they nearly all do dahl, but that can get a bit boring.

Hey Buckwheat, nice to hear from you!

You're right with what you're saying re: the Aussie BBQ is a real big pain for me and I usually avoid them like the plague...as you say, some people who are vegetarian don't seem to mind their veggie sausages being right next to the meat, but I find it revolting. I don't like the smell of BBQ's and generally feel really uncomfortable at these types of gatherings....unless of course it's a veggie BBQ!!

Avene! I'm soooooo glad you visited here! Now it's feeling like the old days again when Veganlist actually worked....

Do you have a current web site where we can hear some of your music ? I remember hearing one of your tracks before and it was brilliant!

There's two veg restaurants in Parramatta. One is called Vrindavan and it's on the corner of Phillip and Smith St. If you ask for vegan they will tell you what is vegan. They have lovely chickpea curries amongst other things. They are really very cheap too. There is also one called Woodlands which is on George Street just up from where the old Roxy cinema used to be. They do have some vegan dishes, although you have to ask more specific questions ie: What exactly is in that dish etc as they don't seem to understand what vegan means.....I've been told after asking if a dish is vegan "Yes it has.............and yogurt in it...."

Ouch, I hate being a 'newbie'! Thanks for the welcome Iceflower

Hi Glenda, yes, and I wonder if anyone else saw your email too. And how are the bunnies? Thanks for the info about the Indian places also. There's one not far from here who do a potato dish with a spinach sauce. I know what you mean about them not knowing what vegan means. Dairy free should do the trick, as I don't know of any Indian curries that contain eggs, beef stock or anything like that. That should realise that yoghurt's dairy too. Probabaly best to check anyway. Pakora's and bahji's may contain egg in the batter though. Naan bread may contain milk also. Infact the food may even been cooked in ghee which is pure butter fat! So it can get difficult :-/

Hi guys I've posted here like once before a few months ago so you probably don't remember me....

Anyways I'm from Melbourne, St. Kilda to be precise.

I noticed you were talking about good veggie restaurants but I don't think anyone mentioned soul mama! Its in the St. Kilda sea baths complex if you melburnians are interested.

I also saw that lamb ad and at first thought it was a parody or something but then I saw the little lamb industry slogan and realised it wasn't haha. I also remember people writing into the age commenting on vegetarians complaining about the ad and saying incredibly mature things such as "thanks to all those vegetarians who complained about that ad for bringing it to my attention. It reminded me to go out and buy some lamb chops". I had to laugh at the pettiness, my god its not as if their right to eat meat is being threatened here.
"Sam is a popular ex-VFL player who is known for being brash, politically incorrect and very Australian."

haha I love how politically incorrect & australian have to fit in the same sentence. Its funny cos its true!

Anyway I missed the BDO, how did it go? I went in 03 but thought it was kinda crap, especially in comparison to something like the falls which has a way better atmosphere and the crowds aren't as stifling. And not as many meat-heads.
Hopefully though it will still be in melbourne next year!

Anyways sorry for pulling out old topics, and for being inarticulate I just woke up!
Hope to make friends with some aussies here though =)
