You can send a money order or cheque. The bank, any bank will convert it for her. There are money changers everywhere in Qld too, if you send cash or travellers cheques..

Where is the veggie bar, anyway?

Everyone is always raving about it, but I have no idea where it is.

I'm in Geelong, but I want to check it out next time I go up there.

Can't wait to get back to Melbourne.

BTW Toefur, welcome to the boards. I follow Geelong in the AFL! But I am from Brisbane.

I went into...uh, I think it was a Coles? a while ago to pick up some tofu and discovered NEW VEGAN PRODUCTS. It was awesome...
They had Kingland (I think?) soy cheese, but I didn't get any because I thought I remembered Kurm saying it was crap at some stage, and Tofutti slices, which I was very excited about, and got some.
And just as I was about to leave I noticed a bunch of Zoglo's stuff! Plus some other vegan frozen-type foods that were never there before. I could have cried.

I don't really have a point. Just that I found a whole bunch of stuff. :D Cheers, all!

Oh, but before I leave the Aussie thread, could you guys give me your opinion on a very important issue?

Is it "Ooroo" or "Hooroo" ?

Kiz

It's Hooroo.

While you're at Coles, try out Sweet William chocolates. They are in the health food section. That is, if you already haven't tried them.

It can be either. Oorroo is slang for Hooroo :)

Oh, and RE: sweet william choc, vegan - Nestle dark choc bits don't contain dairy. And they taste a lot better!

Hey y'all... couple of questions for ya'z...

are french fries served in restaurants fried in animal fat? Because *damn* they taste good. They taste like the fries I had in Belgium years ago, which were indeed fried in lard... so, I was just wondering. And what's with the seasoned salt they put on the fries? Is that chicken salt? What is it? I got some fries at a kebab place and they put that stuff on it before I could say anything. It just tasted extra salty, but it still made me wonder.

OK and now a non-foodie question. DH and I have the week off between xmas and new years. We were thinking of going up to brisbane or cairns or townsville or something (just like everyone else, ya?) and staying at a resort as our xmas pressie. Like a place that has a swim-up bar and hot tubs and major spoil-me factors. Any recommendations on places to stay or areas to avoid? I'm scared that cairns might be uber-overcrowded but it seems like 'the' place to go for tropical resorts... Any thoughts?

Some chips are cooked in animal fat, some in vegetable oil - you just need to ask each place individually. And yep, thats would be chicken salt.

AAA! I knew it. Gross. Oh well. Now I know. Thanks iceflower :) :)

no probs :) shame though hey, I remember it tasting good! who knows though, have a look at the supermarkets and you can probably get a vegetable stock that you can add yourself that will do just as good a job!

long thread. would take me a year to read right through. anyway, my first post. hi to all from melbourne. male. 31. not veg, but wouldn't mind. have to admit i do eat white meat. i guess i just don't know how to live veg. i have considered a cooking class. either that or get a veg gf. might be better to take the classes.

Hey kerr, welcome to the boards! :) You might check out the "Vegetarian and Vegan" forum because there are a lot of threads there about being veg, doing it properly, etc. A class is a great way to start (though a veg g/f would work, LOL), but just make sure the cuisine is reasonable - in other words, stuff you'd make at home... Also, I'd die without my cookbooks. You might also find some inspirations on www.vegweb.com.

Or, how about http://www.vnv.org.au/ - the veggie network of victoria! :D they have links on being veggie (though some of it is old)

I'm new to australia (been here 4 months) but love it already and find Sydney to be incredibly veg-friendly. I hear Melbourne has heaps of veggie places as well. One of them - vegetarian orgasm I think?? I hear the desserts are to die for. :D

Welcome! :)

If anyone's looking for vegetable stock, Massel has a range of stocks (and gravies) that are all veg(an); veggie/chicken/beef stocks (including low salt), and gravies (brown/chicken/meat/supreme). You can use the stocks like salt (the container ones work best, not the cube ones).
