Something like 24 pages of posts???
I am so glad I found this board! :D
I only made it like 11 pages and there were, what, 15 Aussie veggie folks... holy crap. O_O
Nov 4th I'm heading to eastern Australia for 6 weeks. We're landing in Cairns and making our way down all the way to Tasmania, to Uluru (at some point) and then leaving from Sydney.
Six weeks! :D Woot woot woot.
Anyone who can give me any information - I'd adore you forevah!! Seriously. The best places to eat, the best touristy things to do, any places I should avoid as a loving vegan gal. I'd really like to see some of the wildlife sanctuaries and aquariums and such but I'm having a heck of a time finding out which would be the best to go to - quality of care for animals and also what you see and get for your money's worth, of course..
I've got a bunch of tour books and stuff that I'm going through, but it's insane. *grin*
Oh geez, any of you folks, feel freeeee to email me or reply here. Either's grand. :D my email is lacykitten@shaw.ca if you'd like to contact me that way.
I'm all excited, finally found lots of Aussie veggies to give me the inside scoop! *does a little dance* :bobo: :vebo:
If you are going to melbourne please let me know and i can give you as much info as you want
there are so many great veggie restaurants in melbourne but one you mustn'y miss out on is vegetarian orgasm: their cakes are to die for and all vegan.
I"ve had a fea american friends check it out and they agree that it is the best place in the world for vegan desserts

Melb is a very veg friendly state in fact the most vegan friendly of all the states in australia so i've been told.
A great website for reading about whats out there is:
www.vnv.org.au
The area that has the most variety of vegan foods/ restaurants is collingwood/fitzroy ( particuarly BRUNSWICK STREET and SMITH STREET)
my personal fave is www.vegetarianorgasm.com.au
Even if you just go there for desserts. Providing you don't mind a little richness. You will kick yourself if you don't try it. I promise you will be shocked. I've had many friends (non veg) mention that they are the best desserts in melbourne and there all vegan.
the whole area is great.
You will find other great vegetarian restaurants like veg out time which sells thai/malaysian/indian curries and the likes. Their yellow lentil dahl is a must try.
Theres also veggie bar. very popular but unfortunately the staff arn't very friendly and the meals seem to be going down hill.
Also friends of the earth cafe. Its very alternative but worth it for the experience.
Theres a big whole foods shop opposite that you can stock up all your health food if you wish.
Even if you don't go to a veg restaurant there. All the restauarants in that area have a good understanding of vegan food. Theres a bar there does $3au lunch pizzas and one of their pizzas is vegan. Even the kebab place has a vegan platter. If you can get accomodation around this area do it.
The bars are great, the food is great, you won't want to leave.
If you travel st kilda you can check out soul mammas. The food isn't the best (not the best variety for vegans) but the view is great (on the water front) just don't go there on a hot day you won't get a table.
Ohh how could i mention st kilda without mentioning lentil as anything. This place is very bohemian and relaxed so much so that there are no prices on the menu. You pay for what you feel you think the food deserves. Strongly recommend the lentil burger (MUST BE WITH SATAY SAUCE) and the japanese pancake (yes both vegan and to die for)
Ohpps sorry if i went a little overboard
Can you tell i'm missing the food back home?
Have a great time and let me know how you.

my personal fave is www.vegetarianorgasm.com.au
.
Sorry their website is down.
But there details are:
Vegetarian Orgasm
59-61 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy VIC 3065
Ph: 03 9419 9321
Opening hours: Tue-Sun 12pm-10pm
If you go on a fri/sat night you will really need to book.
Also i thought of one more thing if you want to go to rural vic.
Visit hepburn springs.
Theres a place there called continental house http://www.continentalhouse.com.au/
which has a large vegan buffet on sat nights and the town also has a great vegetarian restaurant called green door cafe..
Plus you can get a great massage there.
Although if your not into the whole bohemian thing i wouldn't suggest going to continental house

Wooo! Thanks for so much good info :D Really!!
It will be really helpful on my trip I bet. :D :D
Now maybe someone can answer this for me:
Is there a place to get not-too-expensive vegan hiking boots in Eastern Australia? By any chance at all?
I can't find vegan ones here at all and obviously have left it too long to order any (plus the ones I've found that I like are $150 roughly! eek!!)... so I might be stuck with leather ones unless I can get some there...
I'm really unhappy with this, I don't know what to do, I've been looking for months for non-leather hiking boots around town but to no avail...
Any ideas?

There is a store in melbourne called vegan wares that may sell them.
Why don;t you just wear trainers/runners?
Lacykitten

My runners aren't that great for hiking around anywhere. I'm going to be doing tours pretty much everywhere we go and hiking around Uluru and everything.

Just looked at the Vegan Wares website and ouch.. O_O
$180 is pretty much their lowest boot price... way too much. Eek.

Lacykitten, I hate to say this, but hiking boots are expensive here. My vegan boots were $190. I could have bought cheaper ones, but they weren't vegan. (Seems a bit ridiculous really).

with_open_eyes - thanks for the link. Checking it out right now! :)
shewolf - I know, vegan ones seems so much more expensive than leather.. I don't get it. *sigh* I mean it sort of makes sense why they would be if the leather ones were made here, in Calgary - Alberta is the beef capital of the world so leather is really cheap. But they're not as far as I can tell. :(
Well in good news, I got some Garmont Vegan boots for $129 today!! And found out that the MEC, where I got them, also carries nagevi brand shoes (I hope the orange ones! I love them so much!!) so I'm going to save up to get those too. woot.

Lacykitten, not sure how long you'll be in Sydney for, but just outside Central (Sydney Railway Station) there's Bhodi's (sp?)..... they have a good range of vegan cakes, pies, take-away meals (or eat-in).
On Pitt street there's a vegetarian restaurant..... can't recall it's name though.
In Newtown there's Green Gourmet vegan restaurant.
As for touristy stuff, there's Centrepoint Tower (an observation floor), Harbour Bridge (you can climb it for about $150, or just catch a train/walk across it), Darling Harbour, Sydney Opera House. Hmmm, I've never really been a tourist in Sydney, having lived here all my life.
Out west there are the Blue Mountains. At Glenbrook there's the BM National Park and a picnic/camping ground that has Kangaroos living there that are accustomed to humans.
Hope some of that helps.
On Pitt street there's a vegetarian restaurant..... can't recall it's name though.
Mamma Chu's! Aka Mother Chu's Vegetarian Kitchen. It's on Lower Pitt. From memory it's pretty vegan, and damn good, too. :hungry: I wanna go eat at Mumma Chu's now! Anyone up for it?
There are two Bohdi locations btw, the cafe one Kurm just mentioned with cakes and stuff, and a restaraunty one that does really wierd vegetarian Yum Cha. Oh, and Lacykitten, I pm'ed you a list a while back, hope you got it.
