That 60 Minutes is on in 30 minutes and I've decided to watch it (omnis I know are refusing to in typical out-of-site out-of-mind omnivore fashion).

so did anyone watch the report on the live export trade?

i have this message from animal liberation qld (i realise the program has already aired but the address's at the bottom are very useful and the online petition too) >>>

ANIMAL LIBERATION QLD - ACTION ALERT

As many people as possible are needed to contact the people listed at the bottom of this email to express your views on live trade.

Be sure to watch Sixty Minutes, 7.30 pm this Sunday (27th/July) on the Nine Network. It is to be called 'Making a Killing'. Glenys Oogjes, the Animals Australia Director, will be in the Channel 9 website 'chatroom' immediately after the program goes to air.

This programme is the culmination of nearly three years of investigations into the treatment of Australian exported animals on arrival in Egypt, Israel and Jordan. British based veterinarian Dr Petra Sidhom and Yossi Wolfson from Anonymous for Animals Rights in Israel have documented the horrendous treatment of our animals in these countries. Both have travelled to Australia and with AA's assistance have presented the evidence to the Government and live export industry. All to no avail - so we have had to go very public!

Animals Australia's expose has been assisted by member societies People Against Cruelty in Animal Transport (PACAT) in WA and Animal Liberation NSW. UK group Compassion in World Farming is also now working closely with AA and its member societies.

Please tell your friends colleagues and family to watch Sixty Minutes. It is a story that desperately needs to be told.

Animals Australia in conjunction with member societies has launched a national campaign and petition calling for a Senate Inquiry into live export. Please download a copy of this petition from our web-site www.animalsaustralia.org and also sign our on-line petition

You can also greatly assist our compaign by contacting the following people with your views on live export:

Richmond RAAF base has been a hive of activity just lately (mainly today), especially with fighter jets buzzing around everywhere. I'm guessing due to (erroneous) US "intelligence" reports about Al-Queda attacks.

The response to the "Live Export trade to the Middle-East" story is the biggest response to a story 60 Minutes has ever received.

I just found out that there's a Green Gourmet vegan restaurant near where I go to TAFE at St. Leonards (north of Sydney). They open 30 minutes before my classes start and close 30 minutes after. This is such good news.

I just checked the online street directory..... the Green Gourmet is right by the railway station.

TAFE canteens suck big time. I guess a vegetarian could eat there, maybe.... but certainly not a vegan.

UNi canteens are only okay for lacto-ovos... I know it's bloody hard for me to find anything non-salad to eat at uni. Bloody cheese on everything.

What do y'all think about Maccas new salads menu (i.e. the veggie burger)? Interesting marketing ploy IMO... it's not vegan though, it has mayo, but my fiance is going to ask someone in the know (he used to be a manager) what's in the patty...

Kurmudgeon

The patty seems to be vegan according to their ingredient list on their web site, and to Sanitarium who make it.

They also cook the veggie burger separate, with separate utensils (but do not guarantee 100% that it may not become tainted).

Do they? Interesting... I was told to order it without mayo if I wanted to get it... LOL We'll see... still not sure about supporting McDeath... but it is frustrating that there are no veg fast food... and I was rather disappointed in our local vegan restaurant the last time I ordered from them.

Oh, yeah, the mayo...... that has egg in it. The patty alone is okay.

I tried the Maccas veggie burger. It wasn't great. Its small and the bread roll leaves bits of herb all over your hands. It has chilli sauce on it which I don't think goes very well with the chickpea patty. The chilli sauce flavour dominates the flavour of everything else.

I prefer the Hungry Jacks veggie burgers (even if they do have the highest fat content!).

You think that's bad. I can't eat gluten (wheat, rye, oats or barley) anymore - so NO fast food - I think even Macca's salads have croutons on them :(. Most of the veggie patties have crumbs too :( so I can't even order just the patty and veggies. And I thought it sucked eating out as a veg*n...

Kate, that blows... you poor thing...

Shadowlee, yeah I was thinking of asking for tomato sauce instead of the chilli sauce...

Thanks hon. In a weird way though I'm kind of happy. No more stomach cramps, constant illness and weight fluctuations!!! But then I think of all the Tim Tams, Mint Slice and Quattro bickies I'll never get to eat...they really deserve a good 'home' know what I mean? :D What will Arnotts and Westons do without me? Come to think of it the junk food industry in Australia is going to collapse heehee.

Hey how's the meet-up coming along? Or shouldn't I ask? ;)

Kurm, I thought the pattie in the vege burger also had egg whites

Here's the ingredients list from their ingedients list document:

Patty:
Vegetables 40% (petit pois, carrots, capsicum peppers, green beans, onions), wheat flour, water, hydrogenated vegetable oil, dehydrated potato, rice, wheat starch, yeast, salt, spices, modified waxy maize starch, hydrolysed vegetable protein, modified tapioca starch.

What I am having trouble with is that Sanitarium say it is made with Chick peas, yet Maccas don't mention them.
Anyway, I just sent an e-mail to Sanitarium to find out more.

Maccas says on the ad in the list of what the burger is made of that it's a chickpea patty...
