I'm not still there but I spent a few years there (~2003-2006). I didn't run into very many vegetarians there, but I can't say I was aggressively searching. Where in PEI are you moving to? The grocery stores in Charlottetown have a pretty good selection of natural/organic/veg items, though I did find I had to go to *both* Sobeys and Superstore to get everything I was looking for.
Hi there,
My fiancee is going to UPEI. We want to live near Charlottetown, but not right in the city. We're looking for something close but more rural.
What kind of things can you not buy at those grocery stores?
I've heard the health food store (The Turning Point) in Montague is good. I'll most likely be making trips over that way.
It's too bad you don't live there anymore. I'm interested in meeting other vegans/vegetarians and organizing a meetup.

I actually spent over a year outside the city of Charlottetown while working/going to school in Charlottetown, before I moved into the city. I was originally about a 15-20 minute drive out of town, which was fine... until it came to winter storms. I'll let you know now that Charlottetown is very slack about plowing after storms - you just learn to live with it but it can be a hassle if you are outside of city limits.
I've never been to the health food store in Montague, though I did drop by one in downtown Charlottetown once or twice (just for nutritional yeast). I don't remember the name of it though.
As for what they have at the grocery stores... well it's been a couple of years so I can't vouch for what they have now, but at the time both stores had a large selection of organic items. Soy milk and rice milk readily available, as well as some soy ice creams. Lots of veggie meats, Yves, tofurkey, etc. The big Superstore on University Ave has Follow Your Heart Vegan Gourmet cheese. There is actually a brand of organic tofu (http://www.maritimesoycraft.com/productlist.php?t=1) made on PEI that is really good. They had a poor selection of soy yogurts at the time - So Nice and another not so great brand.
What am I forgetting?

Thanks for replying.
I was wondering about winter storms and plowing. We don't want to live in Charlottetown, but we do want to be close, especially considering the weather.
Was the name of the health food store in Charlottetown called The Root Cellar? I've heard of that one.
Wow, it sounds as though the grocery stores have a much better selection of vegan products than I assumed.
Also, congrats on the upcoming wedding! My fiancee and I are getting married next month near Washington, DC and having an all vegan wedding as well.

I actually think it was the Root Cellar, or maybe it was Nature's Harvest? Like I said, I was hardly ever in the health food stores! :)
There is a restaurant called the Formosa Tea House (http://www.formosateahouseinc.com/en/index.htm) that is vegetarian, and very vegan friendly. Some foods have egg in them. I'm not sure about their "veggie meats" - I wasn't vegan at the time I tried them but they were a bit too meat like and I didn't like them.
Wow, another vegan wedding! :hamster: Do let us know how it goes.
PS I replied to your PM with more info :)

I've heard of the Formosa Tea House. I hope to try it when I go look at houses next month.
We're excited about our upcoming vegan wedding.

I wonder if we know each other IRL. :)

Mmmmaybe ;) I went to UPEI so most of the people I knew went there... or worked at Sobeys (I worked there PT while I was in school)

My wife and I will be arriving on PEI next month. We're both vegans.
Any other vegetarians or vegans there now?

I heard of a restaurant called Sunbeams Organic Cafe. It's in downtown Charlottetown at 62 Queen Street. Has anyone been there? Are there good vegan options?

I'm on PEI and living in Stratford. Reply on this thread or send me a private message if you're vegetarian/vegan and on PEI as well.
I did my undergraduate at UPEI (BBA, 03). I miss PEI so much - living in Philadelphia, PA now but PEI is the best!!! I was a lacto-vegetarian during school. i don't think i ran into any other vegetarians on the island while i was there :)
