If you're into Thai food, the Ben Thanh is a good option. Food ranges from $5-$10 per dish, usually on the lower end, and there is quite a bit of vegeterian and vegan options
The best place to go for a tattoo is Mike Austin's place, Custom Tattoing, 306 Simcoe St.

Apparently it's hard to get in and you'll totally need an appointment... good luck!

ah! Ben Thanh! thank you :p
my boyfriend ate there once and wanted to take me there but neither of us could remember the name and he couldn't find it in the yellow pages or anything.
i'll have to remember for next time.
anywho we went to maggies. it was really good :)
there weren't that many vegan dishes, i think 4, but i got the italian eggplant relish, it was very good. very very nice place, sort of middle-eastern meets italian. you get a free appetizier which is vegan, and the meal comes with a really nice salad and fruit all on one plate. waiter was obviously new and kept dropping things, but cute so that's ok.
anyway anyone in london should check it out, it's right across from coven garden on king.
oh, i skipped the tattoo, i didn't know exactly 100% what i wanted so i'm waiting until i know for sure. went shopping instead, bought clothes, and then went and saw spiderman 2 finally. but i will keep that place in mind for when i do decide. thanks.
eta: oh almost forgot. for anyone with an omni s.o. my bf had the roast and said it was very good. he's very picky especially with restaurants, and he said everything was good and it was nice etc. it's not every day we agree on something like that. so

I've always wanted to go to Maggie's, now that I know they have vegeterian options, I'll definetely have to check it out.
What'd you think of the 2nd Spiderman?
If you guys are ever in the K-W area, there's a Ben Thanh there too...
Happy Birthday, btw.

hey, I live in Ontario now, for two months anyway. I'm on the northern reserve of Pikangikum doing research. Anyone here from the north or spent time there?
Eating veggie up here and eating well required me to bring some of my own food-lots of pre-made east Indian foods, and black beans and chickpeas. I eat a lot of wild berries too.
Some of you may cringe, but even though I will not buy meat here, if someone offers me fish they caught or some moose meat they hunted, I will try it. Do you think my stomach will be able to handle it?

Well my entire family is veggie, for god knows how many generations, so its a fact of life for everyone..
We dont have any veggie chinese stores as far as i understand but i am not in favour of chinese food, it churns my stomach needlessly..
The sauces they use usually contain oyster and their soups contain chicken broth even though its veggie..
Where is buddha's light? i mean, do you have a address or a phone number??
Hey Smash.
Here's the link to Buddha's Light. You should check it out sometime. The food is really great. http://www.fgs.ca/english/index.html I think the lunches are on Saturday, not Sunday. They also have a little coffee / snack place located on their grounds for food outside of lunch.
I totally know what you mean with Chinese foods. I've run into a lot of problems with that in regular Chinese restaurants, but if you can find a Veggie Chinese restaurant, you won't have that problem. The Chinese veggies, particularly Buddhists love to make up food that looks, feels and tastes like meat without any meat-related substances in it, including the sauces. It's also a fact of life for them not to harm any animals, so you can be pretty confident of their ingredients. You'd be amazed at some of the stuff they come up with! YUM!
So, do you ever wonder what meat tastes like? Ever get urges to try?

Quick question... do you know where to get any vegeterian Chinese to go in London...? There used to be Ching Sum but now it's gone... I'd love to find a replacement!

Hi Funnygrrl.
I did a little search, but didn't come up with anything. Sorry. I'm not familiar with London, but if you're ever in TO, I can direct you to a ton of stuff.
What you might want to do is take a tour of Chinatown, as some restaurants aren't advertised. If you can find a Chinese Buddhist temple, you can inquire there too. Sometimes they sell veggie products and many temples also serve lunches.
Good luck!

I'm in Pikangikum, which is north of Red Lake. There isn't even an all weather road that gets here, I had to take a half hour boat ride to get to the reserve.
An elder said she was going to bring me some moose meat that she hunted and pounded herself. She hasn't brought it yet, but if she does I will for sure try it, otherwise it will be a huge insult and they will not want to work with me anymore and my whole project would be ruined.

It's time for me to say hi to the locals :hi: I'm in downtown TO, and pretty much the only other place I ever go to is Hamilton once in a while. After a month of making sure I mean it (being veg) I'm ready to venture out into the world of restaurants - does anyone have any favourite downtown Toronto restaurants I should try?
btw I'm not actually local but I've been here 7 years and I'm *almost* Canadian. Guess that makes me an alien, there are worse things.

Hi Salamander,
Welcome to Toronto (??) Canada (??) not sure which one is more important with lower risk of being taken the wrong way ;-)
Vegeterian places... anywhere in Chinatown on Spadina between College and Dundas, specifically the Thai places up close to College. Yum yum! If I think of anywhere else that's a must try, I'll let you know...

Hi Salamander,
I'm sure I'm going to think of tons more places as soon as I send this email but a good place to go is along Spadina, in Chinatown... specifically the Thai places near College...
HOpe that helps, if I think of anywhere else, I'll let you know.

Hey Salamander
Thai. I love Thai, especially Pad Thai, but beware! They use a lot of fish sauce in their food and definitely in their Pad Thai and spring roll dipping sauce. Make sure you ask if any of their items have it in it. I used to eat it practically once a week, but had a rude awakening! A few places, however, will make the food without the fish sauce. One is Spring Rolls and Another is Saigon Sister, both on Yonge just south of Bloor. Don't go to Green Mango though.
A nice vegetarian soup and sandwich (and pie) place is Wanda's Pie in the Sky on ?Cumberland by Omega near Yonge & Bloor.
Pulp Kitchen is a nice well rounded veggie restaurant at 898 Queen St East
Havn't tried them yet, but I've had a number of their dinner pies I get through th health food store...Le Commensal is a full range veggie restaurant located at 655 Bay St.
A good Chinese veggie place is Simon's Wok at 797 Gerrard St East
That should hopefully get you started!

Thank you so much! I'm sad about Green Mango, but at least Sring Rolls is right there. And I'm really looking forward to checking out the Pie in the Sky place! I've seen it but didn't know it was veggie. Those are all right in my neighbourhood :) :)

Wanda's have the best Avocado sandwiches, so be sure to check that out.
If you're in this area, there are a lot of places you can check out. Ugh. You shouldn't have gotten me started on food! I love food and to talking about food! :lick: Here's a couple more...
I like Banjari - an Indian restaurant across the street from Spring Rolls. Although they serve meat, they have a good vegetarian selection and the quality of food is really good.
I also frequent Aji Sai - a Japanese restaurant on Yonge, north of Bloor beside the Shopper's. We normally get the Sakura Rolls sans tempura bits. It's a sushi roll with avocado and an amazing spicy sauce. These rolls have ruined me for other sushi rolls. But, the sauce is made from Japanese Mayo and it's not vegan.

Prairie Girl - I've put my Hamilton friend on the case :) the one he knows of so far (not exlusively veg but apparently pretty close) is Bean Bar in Westdale Village (sorta Dundas, sorta Mac University town). I'm going to try it out on saturday night, so I'll let you know!
As for Downtown Toronto, I have found heaven! My veg tattoo artist recommended Utopia on College just east of Clinton. They have an awsome atmosphere, really cool but relaxing, with super hot tall muscular tattood and very friendly and polite waiters, and the menu is 50% veggie and all made on premises. I had THE best veggieburger in the whole world there, I had to pull it apart and hold it up to the light to make sure, but it was definitely veggie! Awesome for an ex meat eater to fulfil those occasional cravings :)
The entire menu is fabulous, and they put a big V next to the veggie items so you know to skip the rest. :-) If anyone's in TO I highly recommend it for veggies and our omni chums alike.

awesome, I live like two blocks south of the Bean Bar (on main west) that's so exciting. I found a place w/ a pretty good Thai Buffet (not exclusively veggie, but more than half) on downtown TO, The One. it was great!

How veggie-friendly is the Stock? I guess London is decent for veggie-fare - being a Uni-town!?

right on, a good friend of mine lives out there.
I'm not too sure how veggie friendly either place is, as I havent been veggie too long myself, but luckily the majority of my friends have gone vegetarian/vegan over the past couple of years, so that's really all I can ask for, right? :)
