View Full Version : Ontario
Hi Folks,
I moved to mississauga 2 yrs back and recently joined Halton Peel veggie group and we meet once a month for veggie get-togethers in restaurants or in parks.
I have been a veggie all my life and so never had to worry about meat at all.
Is there anyone from toronto or mississauga or oakville here?

Hi,
My earlier family generations were veggies too.So i would consider myself lucky. What prompted you to become a veggie? Are you jealous that i am a veggie for life? J/K :-)

Well you always learn something everyday isnt it. I got to know this because of a business friendship i developed over 2 yrs back with a person and she informed me that the veggie stuff will start and so i jumped in.
We are roughly about 7-10 people who regularly meet once every month.
How long have you been a veggie and what prompted you to become one?

I've been a veggie since Jan 2001 for ethical reasons. Best decision I ever made :)

What kind of foods do you eat though?any diary products or none of it?
I am trying to reduce the diary consumption as much as possible like drinking soya milk for example.

I'm lacto-ovo, and although I try to substitute with soy products as much as possible, I doubt I'll ever go vegan.

Oh, I changed for a bunch of reasons!
Shamefully, I first delved into it because the guy I was dating (now my husband) had been a veggie for about 10 years (although we met over a steaming basket of chicken wings and sauce smeared all over my face). I must say, that it was tough the first year or so. I cheated guiltily from time to time.
I was also trying to improve my health by going veggie and organic.
But then, I took courses at Seneca (Holistic Health Program) and that threw me completely into complete resolve. It really opened my eyes to the meat and seafood industries!
Now I'm more hardcore than my husband. I do it for the environment (e.g., over fishing), for the animals (e.g., against factory farming and exploitation), and religious/philosophical (i.e., Buddhist beliefs).
I don't think that I'd ever be able to sink my teeth in any form of meat or seafood again! Blech!
I'm also trying to minimize my intake of byproducts. The abuse to animal that produce these products is by far worse that those used for meat. We only use soy milk now and never eat eggs for eggs. Unfortunately, I LOVE Asian type noodles and most of them have eggs in them. I found it hard to find truly vegan products to eat on an everyday basis, and some of the vegan stuff are just yuck, like the nayonaise. I guess I'm also a lazy cook.
I think it's great that you have a very supportive family base! Boy, did I get pressured a lot from my family when I first did the switch.
Do you guys have a lot of veggie Chinese stores near you? They make the best fake meat. You should try a Buddhist Temple called "Buddha's Light" in Mississauga for a Sunday Lunch. It's cheap and it's really good!!

I'm from Kingston, Ontario... If anyone lives in the area please drop me a line! We have a group of vegetarians at my high school who want to do some activism but need more backup!

I've lived here now for four and a half years, originally from Toronto... I love it here, though all my family's back home... makes it a bit rough, but I go back enough I think so...
What do you study?
Ooh, I'd love to live in TO, so many live shows!!! I'm taking civil engineering, and can either specialize in structural or environmental, but I haven't decided. Have you found any good restaraunts or health food stores here? I'm sorta new at this (about 5 months) and haven't really checked out the vegetarian options here!

Toronto's awesome for that sort of thing, but it's also way expensive! I mean, granted, in comparision to London, there's always something going there, not to knock London or nothing, but... As for restaurants, :chef: I found a good places... do you like Indian food? the Curry Garden on Richmond Row (near King) is pretty good and reasonable. The Ben Than at York and Richmond serves good Viet-Thai veggie options... but its still so hard to find anything here... As for health food stores, I would say Quartermaster in the Wortley Village (at Wortley and Elmwood) is really good, but a little high end. Danfield's in the Covent Garden Market downtown is good too, but also a bit pricey. I actually hate to admit this, but I find the new Real Canadian Superstore and the Loblaws in town offer pretty decent options for pretty reasonable a price... The only other place I can think is Lyndies on Oxford St. East (just east of Quebec St). Do you have access to a car? There's a great farmer's market apparently on Dundas, but it's past the bus route so I've never been... but if you do have access to one, let me know and I'll send you some info...
Oooh, I love the market! And I really need to check out more indian restaraunts, I hear Ben Tahn is really good, its big with the university crowd! I've never really been down to Wortley, I'll have to hit it up some weekend.
I'll PM ya with my e-mail address so I can stop hogging the board, lol!
Aww i see, good thing for you then..Its hard initially but after a while the body responds better..I didnt know seneca college had such programs..Interesting..
Byproducts as you said, especially from cow, are used everywhere, thats why people say Cow is the most useful animal even while dead..:-(
Well my entire family is veggie, for god knows how many generations, so its a fact of life for everyone..
We dont have any veggie chinese stores as far as i understand but i am not in favour of chinese food, it churns my stomach needlessly..
The sauces they use usually contain oyster and their soups contain chicken broth even though its veggie..
Where is buddha's light? i mean, do you have a address or a phone number??

hey can anyone recommend a good restaurant in London? not necessarily all veg*n though that would be good, but somewhere with lots of vegan options, preferably not too expensive.
my birthday is coming up, my boyfriend said we're celebrating on sunday by spending the day in London (he won't tell me what we're going to be doing there) but he says i have to decide what to do for supper (either eat out in London or come home and make something or get takeout etc) i figure it'd be nice to eat out for once but i don't know London at all so need some ideas.
thanks!
I've never been there, but I hear Maggie's is really nice: www.maggies.ca
The website has a seperate veg/vegan menu, and it looks yummy!

omg
i shouldn't have gone to that site on an empty stomach
they have a lot of great options, thanks!
stuffed french toast, potato frittata, mango sorbet.... man i'm hungry now
there's actually some good omni choices too though, i was worried about my bf not being able to get something he likes, last time i dragged him to a vegan restaurant he hated it (granted the food wasn't very good and was way too expensive for teeny portions).
