I checked out the green door today :) It was smaller then i'd expected... there wasnt much there that i couldnt get at the stores i frequent here... however, i did find vegan margarine, something i had been looking for for a while now :) and they had vegan gourmet cheese, but i didnt get any cause the last vegan cheese i found was so awful i took one bite and tossed it away!
the prices were pretty good :) kiss my face shampoo was there and i usually pay about $10 here and theh had it for 6 somethin.
I also found the dvd earthlings! :bobo:
this is a nice little place, and i'll be going back when i'm in the area :)
p.s. Garnett, they have gummi bears!

New girl on the board...hello fellow Ontarians.
Just wondering if anyone has tried the new meatless ground from Veggie Patch. I bought a couple packets in the last couple of months and it was absolutely fantastic.
Unfortunately, it was a test run and Costco may or may not sell it again. Boo hoo....it was great to use for Shepherd's Pie and lasagna.
What do others use ???
OMG WHERE DID YOU FIND THAT.
It was at my costco two years ago and it never came back and I;'ve been looking for it ever since (well the veggie patch "chicken" burgers)

Yellowduckie, we found it at the Costco in Hamilton. Amazing stuff.
Sad it is gone......but you say you had it 2 years ago....is there hope it will come again ??? LOL
I am doing lasagna tonight and using Pete's Italian herbed tofu....it will have to suffice :(
I made a alfredo sauce using tofu last week.........it would have been vegan except it was not very creamy ( unless I had used LOTS of oil ) so I added 2 % milk and voila......amazing :)
What's everyone else up to cooking that's new and interesting these days....please share.

Justing wondering if anyone has checked out The Duke Street Muse in Kitchener or the Zen Garden on Waterloo, and if so, what are your thoughs on the food? (vegan)
Also, got non-veg restaurants, can anyone recommend any good meals at restaurants that I can pull my non-veg friends out to. I hate getting somewhere only to realize there is little to nothing on the menu I want to eat.

I cant wait to hear what you think!
I'm going to Toronto this weekend, is there anything good there to check out? I'm going for lunch someplace, i was thinking about going to the LUSH store, and maybe that vegan shoe store... does anyone also know of any place where they sell vegan make up in TO?

Joy, go to the Kensington Market (actually, "that vegan shoe store" (left feet) is in the North end of the market). It's like, vegan heaven. There are 4 health food stores within a few blocks. One I go to has an EccoBella stand... it's all cheaper there than I can buy in Ottawa. I can't remember what it's called, but it's on Kensington ave. and beside Essense of Life natural foods. It isn't in the veg directory. Both of those stores have some good deals on stuff.
NOT ALL ECCO BELLA IS VEGAN. But lots of it is. Look on their web site before you go to make sure what is and what isn't. I use their pressed powder, foundation and lipstick.
If you like faux meat (faux fish etc.) there is an all-veg store at the back of King's Cafe on Augusta with a large selection of frozen faux meats and other Asian products. We have bought faux chicken drumsticks, a faux ham, faux fish etc. We bought them mostly for the novelty. :)
If you're anywhere near the Annex check out Grassroots Environmental store. It's on Bloor between Spadina and Bathurst. That whole strip has quite a bit of stuff.
In the future you might want to consider ordering makeup from The Organic Make-up company. It's a Toronto-based company that makes mostly vegan make-up. http://www.theorganicmakeupcompany.com/ I use their concealer. You can order it from their site and pick it up if you want to save on shipping charges. They make the stuff to order pretty much though, and don't have a storefront.

Garnett, there's another place in Scarborough called Nelakee Veggie Mart that has faux seafood, chicken etc. as well. http://www.nlkveggiemart.com/ I like their faux shrimp, but they aren't on the site.

I love the ecco bella foundation... i have acne and i find that it covers it up really well cause it isnt that light. But their lightest shade is too dark for me :(

I've been on a hunt for the right foundation and powder. I'm not too concerned with it being vegan as much as I am concerned with it being not tested on animals... just cause i think that cutting out meat is more important, cause if we all did that, then there would be no animal by-products to put in these things. But having said that, if i can find a good vegan brand, i would get that to be supporting the company :) I used to use maybelline foundation and i just loved it, but i cant use that now obviously. the others i have tried are all not light enough. I've tried a bunch of powders as well and they were all too dark or too yellow. except for one by revlon... but i didnt like the puff that comes with it... lol there is always something!

joy, I have very light skin myself (I used to get teased a lot for being so pale  but I use the second lightest concealer by OMC and I think it may even be slightly lighter than I need. I bet they have something that would work for you. :) I'm on the left in this pic... http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/8169/3253/1600/pamela%20and%20jenna.0.jpg
For me, it's not just about the stuff being vegan, it's also that a lot of the drugstore brand make up has lots of horrible chemicals and crap in it. I don't want that garbage on my face. :-/
Americans have so much more selection when it comes to vegan make up. :grr:
thats good to hear! Then i will definitely order from them. I'm also really concerned about all those chemicals as well... I'm having estrogen issues and i want to start avoiding things with parabens and whatnot.
what do americans have? I go there quite a bit, but i've never seen anything?

Well, they have Arbonne (mail order, but we aren't even allowed to order it) as well as brands like Zia and Beauty Wihout Cruelty.
We can order the latter two from online stores, but once you factor in shipping and customs and all that it's not worth it. At least not for me. :) I got a zia pressed powder in Indianapolis and really like it.
There's a brand called Jane Iredale that lots of people rave about... I don't know if we can get it in Canada or not. It's expensive, but is just minerals... no additives or anything.
ah i've heard of those! I know what you mean about it not being worth it. I hate ordering anything from the states, after you pay shipping and then customs, you wind up paying double! I'm not sure if I am ever going back (I was going there cause I was dating someone - and now I'm not), but I still have friends up there, so if anyone knows of good stores to stop at off the 94 hwy through MI, IN, IL and WI, that'd be awesome! If I do make it back I hear there is a good store in Milwakee WI :)

At LEAST twice as much!
I'm going to Toronto next week but won't have much of a chance to shop. :( We're taking my cat Pesto for an MRI.
I'm pretty sure we have Arbonne sales people here too, and I KNOW I've seen Beauty Without Cruelty (or else smth very similar) in health food stores. Check out Noah's, maybe it was there.
joyinc, if you haven't seen it already, check out the Toronto Vegetarian Association's website. They have a resource centre that's open mon & wed evenings and saturday afternoons. They also have a vegetarian directory where you can find tons of veg restaurants and businesses in and around Toronto.

I've been in quite a few Toronto HFS's and have never seen the BWC products (including Noah's on Bloor). If you ever see them again please post where. :)

On another note, I dont think Im giong to make it to Kitchener today :( Im disappointed but we'll try again in two weeks. Boo hoo.

hey. We ended up going. Its a long story. I got some jerky and marshmallows and awful "gummy bears" And some egg replacer. I should have just gotten jerky and marshmallows and left it at that. Somehow I breezed thru $65 in about 2 minutes. Oh.. I bought mascara from Beauty Without Cruelty too. I wanted brown/black but they only had black. Im ordering jerky online sometime. Ill get like $50 worth. Im obsessed with that stuff. At the mall in Caimbridge, I found a veg. B-complex and bought that too. It wasnt a completely wasted trip at least.

Oh i didnt see the mascara! how is it? I wasnt really looking then cause i am still using up an old bad one and i have an unopened one from revlon, so i'm good for a while... but i will probably be going back to that place monthly when i go to see the doc
what'd you think of the jerky? I tossed mine. i just couldnt stomach it, it was so gross!
oh and what brand of vitamins did you find? I've been using thorne... just wondering what else was out there...
I actually didnt make it to Toronto today lol. cause of the snow. so i went and did groceries instead... i was so surprised that zehrs carries a cheap vegan shampoo and conditioner! I saw this new display and wasnt going to bother picking it up cause i was sure it was going to be something that i couldnt buy, and the first thing it said on the back was no animal testing or animal ingredients! It's http://www.naturesorganics.com.au I got the peach one for dry hair :) It smells yummy and i cant wait to use it! It looks like they have a bunch of cool products, so I'm hoping it doesnt suck. It'd be nice if it was good, cause the bottle was like $3 and twice as big as the $10 Kiss my face bottle i have :)
