Hi to everyone in NS!
This week is march break and two of the museums in Halifax have brought in live animals. The Museum of Natural History has insects which they are cooking, e.g. maggots, etc. and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic's theme is Pets at Sea, so they have animals that were traditionally pets on ships. The animal rights group I am part of were asked BY THE MUSEUM to table there with literature, like we've been doing for approximately six years, so we set up a schedule for our members, and one of us has been there almost all week. The Museum of Natural History has gone quite well because people are grossed out by the cooked insects so when they see our table with info promoting veg*ism it seems like a great idea :D However, things haven't gone so well at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. At first, they were limiting which pamphlets we could put out (e.g. no pamphlets re: the seal hunt because it's bloody and disturbing), and a few days ago, they told us we had to remove two of our display boards because there were pictures of caged animals on them and they were "traumatizing the children". Hmmmmm. Isn't that exactly what they have all through the museum? there are Squirrel Monkeys, Lemurs, a single Crow (!), a leopard (who's endangered), a hedgehog, two goats, two pigs, a rainbow McCaw, two other McCaws, tons of mice (who are probably being fed to the snakes who are directly across from them), rats, an iguana, and a tarantula. I think there's a couple others that I can't remember right now too.
Anyway, I'm asking people to write a letter to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and other relevant people (I'll get names and addresses and post them for you) to let them know it is not acceptable to promote animals in captivity. If you want more info just pm me, I have pics of these poor little guys too. Thanks to anyone who's willing to help out! manda :)

Here are the addresses of the museums. If you can write a quick letter expressing your objections to having live animals on display, that would be wonderful. Have a great day everybody!

Hey all, I live in Toronto, but I have family in Nova Scotia that I visit every year. I was wondering if anyone could recommend vegan restaurants in or near any of the following places:
Annapolis Royal
Digby
Kentville
New Minas
Wolfville
Also, any vegetarian associations or ar groups that I might connect with while I'm there. Thank you sooooo much.

I can only think of one veg*n friendly restaurant around here:

Taj Mahal (Indian cuisine), on Main Street in Wolfville

There are a few Chinese resturants in New Minas so you may have some luck there. I also heard there is a Sushi place there now too and Japanese resturants often have some tofu dishes and veggie rolls.

Oh, if you make it out Chester way, Duke Street Eatery has a Boca burger and Carta resturant has some veggie dishes (one of the owners is vegetarian).

The Just Us! cafe in Wolfville & Roastery in Grand Pre both have plenty of veg, some vegan, mostly organic fare. Kentville is a wasteland, although Cafe Central does a veg wrap & has soymilk for smoothies & coffee.
Then there's always Harvey's in New Minas for their veggieburger...

Don't go to Kao restaurant (in New Minas). They have absolutely nothing!

thanks all soooo much. Any Yarmouth activists out there? I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but it is specific to NS. Apparently, there are plans to build an aquarium in Yarmouth to make it more of a tourist attraction. Thoughts? Personally, I don't like the idea. I've been to Yarmouth once (we stay in Annapolis Royal area so it's a drive) and I thought the lighthouse was quite interesting on its own. After all, why would anyone want to go to an aquarium when the ocean is right outside? *sigh*

They are desperate to bring industry of any kind to Yarmouth.
Since 99.9% of the tourists coming to NS are doing so to eat lobster suppers, clam chowder, & the like, &/or go fishing or hunting, an aquarium should be right up their alley. :(

Anyone from Lower Sackville?

I visit Lower Sackville every week to stay with my bf.
He's an omni but I'm quite vegan.
Lr Sackville is a wasteland for veg food.
Hopefully you get into Hfx frequently for trips to more veg-friendly places/activities.

I guess I'll post here. Hey, there's a possibility that I may move to Halifax, so then I'd be posting here anyway :)

Hah, thanks baemonns :) I am living in Halifax now, but I have a friend from New Glasgow! From what I hear, it's a nice spot.

It's nice here, but definitely not veg*n-friendly!! Very hard to find a single vegan item on most menus in town.

Welcome, Teresa :) Pete's Frootique is my favourite place for groceries in Hali. I've become addicted to that place. I could spend all day in there.

oh yea! I forgot about Petes frootique. They have Organic Pink Lady apples... delicious.

But they too have Earthbound Farm crap, and I'm just not all over that.

There must be something I don't know about Earthbound farms. I prefer to pick my own apples and stuff, but for prewashed bags of lettuce or baby spinach it's always seemed pretty good.
